Terrorism has to be demonstrated as resulting in severe negative consequences to the terrorists and the nations that back them. What those consequences are would be up for debate. But a slap on the wrist ala the Canadian justice system wouldn't work...

Agreed. Even w/ the Cnd justice system jab.

Did somebody say....cockroaches?

So the plan is, we drop giant loaves of bread in terrorist-filled countries and wait until they get all inside the bread eating it up all yummy-like & then we bomb the bread (or poison it) & kill all the terrorists?

Hmmm....I LIKE IT!!

This is why remaining in Afghanistan is counterproductive to our security, along with the Afghans being able to fend off the Taliban by themselves being a pipe-dream and the extremely high likelihood that any "democracy" that's being formed in the country will quickly enough transform into some kind of authoritarian gov't (or worse) via military coup or simple corruption etc. after NATO leaves.

After NATO leaves? Just when is that going to be? US troops are still in Germany and Japan, 65 year later.

I was never very much of a rehabilitation supporter. More of a lock 'em up throw away the key sort. We have some fine artic islands that'd hold many ill-doers.

I believe in rehab, to a point. Simply locking them up doesn't solve the root problems criminals have, psychological or otherwise. How many criminals come out of homes of poverty or abuse etc.? What i don't like about the Cnd system is that sentences are often too short, prison conditions sometimes too glamorous, or criminals simply get off with little to no punishment whatsoever.

OT:

There are rich criminals from wealthy backgrounds as well, of course.

Re: a criminal's root problems. Crime isn't a sickness...it's a choice. Live next door to a crackhouse for a period and you'll know the solution...and it doesn't involve rehab.

That reminds me of a Carlos Mencia routine...

Akmed: So when are you American people leaving?

American soldier: Leaving?! Motherf**ker, you'd better learn to say 'do you want that super-sized?'

Akmed: You're not leaving soon??

American soldier: F**k no! Budweiser is coming in about a week (checks watch).

I think that Germany and Japan are the model. I think vacating those countries, or the Muslim lands, would be a terrible idea.

I would be for rehabilitation if it worked. There are problems with it though.

The first is that many of the criminals have inadequate education to make a go of it legitimately. Also, there are regulatory roadblocks to many felons being re-employed. I would favor a system that would strip those disabilities for the truly rehabilitated.

Further, I would make rehabilitation services, and good ones, readily available. The price would have to be severe monitoring after any release to make sure it worked. But if we can fix the people, that's just great.

It's almost winter up in this neck of the woods. Certain criminal types around here will soon being commiting a large enough crime that they'll be able to weather the cold season up at the provincial prison/jail in comfort...TV...gym...computer access...etc. The good life as far as they're concerned.
