Kliege Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Stephen Harper plans to outline his Conservative vision of the future this weekend as Paul Martin cruises over the Atlantic on his way to commemorate the past. Martin's political opponents are hoping to capitalize on his extraordinary absence during a tight election campaign. The prime minister flies to France on Saturday for D-Day ceremonies. He's back late Sunday, before jetting to the U.S. on Tuesday for a two-day G-8 meeting in Georgia. That's four crucial days in a 36-day campaign. While Martin plays the role of statesman on the world stage, the Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Quebecois are more than happy to have the spotlight at home Quote
Goldie Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Mark my words. the CBC will go on and on about how great he is on the international stage. Expect to see a close up of a tear. The flag shoved in our faces at every turn. My hope is that there is not a hint of politics in Norway, uh, I mean Normandy. Does anyone know if he'll be taking a Sea King from Paris to the memorial? I agree. This is a guy has never shown the slightest interest in the military except as a place to slash money from for his private projects. I doubt he either knows or cares anything about Canada's military history. He is there to wrap himself in the flag and be shown as THE PRIME MINISTER while the cameras look on. Black Dog Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 He is there to wrap himself in the flag and be shown as THE PRIME MINISTER while the cameras look on. To be fair...he IS the Prime Minister. I don't get it. What's he supposed to do? Stay home and get pilloried by the media and opponents for ignoring an important event in Canadian history? Quote
idealisttotheend Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 If he stayed home he'd also get pilloried for knowing nothing about Canada's military history or having done nothing but cut military spending. Oh wait, he's gonna get pilloried for that anyway by the Cons among us, maybe he should call John Turner and they can reminisce. maplesyrup Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Martin will probably go up in the polls while he is away. He has been in people's face too much. maplesyrup Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Martin is the Prime Minister and is fulfilling his role going to Normandy. BTW, if you don't like the CBC, why bother watching it (I'm talking partly to myself here)? Watch your Fox News or whatever turns your crank. Don't we have something like 500 channels now? Surely one of them will work for you. Do you enjoy eating? What about the Cooking channel? In the meantime, while Martin is away, we can expect Liberal attack dogs to be going all out after Harper and Layton. It should be a fun week. August1991 Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 PM PM invited all the other leaders to join him. Harper said a vet from his riding would go in his place. Duceppe said yes then the Liberals came back with all kinds of details including the fact that he would only be there for an afternoon. He then declined saying the Liberals always pull stunts like that. Quote
maplesyrup Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 New Democrat Leader Jack Layton provided his seat to a veteran quite awhile ago. Good for Harper and Duceppe to do the same thing. Kiraly Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 I agree with M.S. on this one. With Martin out of the country, he will most likely receive only favourable press... ...Lieberal's fortunes will more likely improve with him away than not. Quote

I don't get it. What's he supposed to do? Stay home and get pilloried by the media and opponents for ignoring an important event in Canadian history? That's a fair question. Yes, he really had no choice but to go. But I feel about him going there almost like I did when seeing Chretien at remembrance day ceremonies, or other similar ceremonies - like gagging. You absolutely knew he hadn't the slightest respect for anyone in uniform, past or present, and felt *nothing* in the way of remembrance. maplesyrup Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Argus....I don't think that is fair. Who knows what someone's personal thoughts are? Argus Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Argus....I don't think that is fair. Who knows what someone's personal thoughts are? Are you talking about Chretien or Martin? Let us just say that at no point in their lives did they ever evidence the slightest interest in or respect for the military or our military history or traditions. Both have made defence an extremely low priority, with very unimportant ministers with no pull in their cabinets. Both have repeatdly slashed defence spending to the bone and beyond, and neither has had any problem with sending out our poorly equipped troops to dangerous assignments without proper equipment. takeanumber Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 It's terrific that the Prime Minister is going. It's a disgrace that Harper et al can't make it. Quote
