I'm sure most people are aware of how the PM bet with the US president over a case of beer. This is illegal in Canada. The PM broke the law. Why hasn't he been charged or thrown in jail for this blatant breach and insubordination of his countries own laws?

MP's and the PM are not exempt from violations of criminal law in Canada - why is he not in jail for this publically known violation of gambling law?

The beer is being donated to a charity!

Thank gawd Harper donated the two cases of beer from Obama to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The media was ready to label him a closet beer guzzling evangelical nut.

all so there was no money but on this bet so it may not be agents the law!

If I didn't know better, I'd think the OP was posted in jest.

Lol. Can you prove it was illegal. SOmething is only against the law if you can prove intent.

You mean like....

Committing mischief not committed? There was lots of intent there, now wasn't it......

There is no intent required to determine if an action is against the law. Intent is required to determine guilt in many cases but is not absolutely necessary to find the accused guilty. Maybe you should really consult a lawyer.

You mean everyone needs to be thrown in jail but only poor people who can not express themselves or who are not able to hire a layer sent to jail so that laws are only junks just be chosen to use when need to bully others?

the law states money or money's worth. Beer has a retail value.

Also the government organized the games. Technically it would meet the definition of a disorderly gaming house.

I wonder whose idea it was for beer instead a hockey jersey? Well, if you look at Harper he does have a beer belly.

That's the traditional wager between politicians....and Harper isn't keeping the beer.

The Prime Minister is obligated to report gifts he receives. If it will make you feel better, when the next report is made public and he doesn't report the two cases of beer report it to the proper authorities. Maybe that will give some purpose to your life.

Wrong. VANOC and the IOC organized the games, not the government.

It was just a matter of time before someone insinuated Harper may be an alcoholic.

BTW, I once knew a woman who had a 7 pound cyst in her stomach. It never occurred to me to think it was a beer belly.

HAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I honestly hope one of you people does file a complaint with the RCMP over this, and I honestly hope it makes the news. Because that would be awesome.

If someone is going to bring charges against a sitting PM they'd better have something better then this.

As others have said call the RCMP and complain. I'm sure they'll laugh in your face and slam the phone down.

However this thread was meant as a joke I'm sure.

Hmmm... isn't the sale and purchase of lottery tickets gabling? Inasmuch as I'd like to see the government ban gambling (or at the very least leave the industry itself), I also think it ought to treat all equally. If indeed gambling is illegal in Canada (then please explain the presence of legal casinos and lottery tickets across the country), then it should either throw no one in jail for gambling or throw each lottery ticked buyer and seller in jail too. What applies to one, applies to all. Take your pick.

Good point. Le'ts say I make a bet with you on something for $100.00, with a guarantee that the money go to charity, then neither of us stands a chance to gain materially from this. It's just a question of who among the two will give his money to charity. Does that still constitute gambling?

I don't know.

Thing's just aren't that simple. Gambling must be run or sanctioned by a province.

Well, where was Harper when he'd made the deal? If that province sells lottery tickets or allows casinos to operate, then I'd say leave Harper alone. If that province did indeed ban all gambling, then prosecute. How complicated is that?

This is not being passed off as a "gift" but proceeds of a bet that had to do with winter games some people are claiming he funded and organized. The beer was won on a specific event within those games that he was in attendance of.

Wrong. VANOC and the IOC organized the games, not the government.

And what of the billions of federal government funding? Did the PM have nothing to do with that?
