Canada did well at the olympics and Steve was the man who made it happen.

Considering that most of the planning was done in BC, much of the funding was arranged by either the BC government or by the Liberal government in Ottawa, this is an absurd claim. Or, more to the point, you're simply lying.

Harper has brought back being proud of our country, instead of the old tired liberal policy of we don't need to win all the time ,winning is not important as long as you do your best and it is not canadian to show your pride in canada, matter of fact you should only critize this country and complain. It started when steve took over the afghan mission and put the pride back into being a soldier and for the population to be proud of our miltary again. That is where it started, with the conservative goverment of Stephen Harper. The decade of darkenss is over. And what was jack doing at the bar( beside grabbing that womens arm just so he could get his mug on tv) ,when if the NDP were in power there would be no olympics, we would be spending all our money on the so called poor.If only stanfield would have won .

Harper has brought back being proud of our country,

No, he didn't. Canadians did that. Harper may not have hurt matters, but I don't think he was the catalyst.

BTW, Paul Martin is responsible for both starting and ending the 'decade of darkness'.

First, Paul Martin was never even really suspected of stealing anything (he didn't need to, he was the wealthiest Prime Minister we ever had), and second, I was talking about the military.

Ah yes, another subscriber to the Lone Bureaucrat Theory of Adscam.

Chuck Guite, Rogue Bureaucrat, acting completely on his own and with a personal $500 spending limit, one day independently picked up the Montreal phone book, flipped to "Liberal Friendly Ad Agencies" and mailed them $200 million for no reason.

I like your twist though " Meanwhile, back in Cabinet, neither Paul Martin, Greatest Finanical Manager in Canuck History, and his boss the Best PM Ever had absolutely no idea at all this was happening".

They stole my money, and gave it to their friends, and got away with it.

Glad to see you approve.

The government should do something.

I find it useful to not pretend I know all the facts. There is no reason to believe that Paul Martin had ANYTHING to do with what happened, especially since the program was run by the PMO.

Canada did well at the olympics and did well economically during a global recession. What government was in power overseeing it? Could it be the dreaded Harper conservatives? How dare those bastards manage the country properly?

we are 56 BILLION in deficit, in what world is that doing well economically?

compared to China's $100 million per gold at Beijing we did well...

it's a lot of money and the 6 billion overall cost hurts but I suppose we could look at long term benefits...healthcare, a fit healthy population coast less than a fat lazy inactive populace...

if the government uses this success and builds on it then we will benefit as a nation...if it doesn't follow up with new facilities for the millions of newly energized kids then it will be a wasted effort...$110 million isn't much when compared to how much it costs to cancel a helicopter contract $500 mil I believe it was...

Watching sports does not make you fit, getting up and playing sports does. Its not a get healthy by sports osmosis situation so your argument is a little faulty. That stated 6 billion is 60 years of sports funding in Canada.. that could of provided a lot of facilities around canada instead of upgrades in a city that already had sports facilities, the money was spent poorly in terms of National Infrastructure development or lasting sports legacy in publically accessable sport that people are en masse more likely to participate in. While not all bad the expesnse and results was minimal and likely had constrained effect with generally unhealthy people spending time watching people through a television screen sitting on their buts eating cheese doodles and drinking a beer.

It's hard to see anything that Parliament has done since Chretien walked out the door as being prudent. I can guarantee you this budget will also not do what needs to be done.

The country has done well under Harper's governance. Face the facts.

In a world where everyone else is doing far worse.

You've got to start with motivating the kids and for them, watching sports does. Kids want to play in the NHL because they watch it. Same goes for the Olympics. People aren't sitting on their butts watching TV and eating cheese doodles because they are watching sports. They do it because they are lazy. Having the infrastructure is great but first you have to motivate people to use it. A lot of our school systems don't even have physical education any more. The only kids that are fit are the ones who go out for athletics. Guess where they get a lot of their motivation.

I wasn't, I found and still find watching sports boring. Playing was enjoyable and I still prefer active exercise. Watching hours of sports is generally boring for kids. The enjoyment is mostly contained in socialization factors surrounding them. The best way to encourage kids to play is to have them play.

Kids want to play in the NHL because they watch it.

I don't think this is true - the reason is because their role models such as parents introduce them to it, and encourage them to play. They buy them equipment to use, etc.. They have fun playing in gym class etc... TV has next to nothing to do with it. Sports such as hockey are very lowly rated by children.

Same goes for the Olympics. People aren't sitting on their butts watching TV and eating cheese doodles because they are watching sports. They do it because they are lazy.

Your point is what, that TV turns people into zombies who are less prone to activity. This is contradictory your first half of the message.

Having the infrastructure is great but first you have to motivate people to use it. A lot of our school systems don't even have physical education any more.

And that is unfortunate. I think 6 billion in funding could of helped with that.

The only kids that are fit are the ones who go out for athletics. Guess where they get a lot of their motivation.

That is stupid. You don't let the fit kids do it, you make fit kids. It is your notion of letting the good ones do it that ruins the health of the nation, your mentality is grossly negligent. Kids are minors and cannot be trusted with organizing their own health when they don't even have a formed idea of what it is or what it takes to do, they need guidance, caretaking and encouragement. Sadly most parents aren't role models enough because they neglect their own health. The government needs to be proactive in insuring health and safety of our youth. A TV bonaza and propaganda show ain't going to do that, action will. A real action plan, not one all about show and encouraging submissive behaviour.

It was a big reason I wanted to play hockey.

My point is, if there is anything on TV that will encourage them to get out and play, it will be sports.

And that is unfortunate. I think 6 billion in funding could of helped with that.

The Olympics didn't cost six billion.

I competed in sports because I wanted to, my parents had little to do with it. Both my kids were involved in sports. Yes I encouraged and helped them but that was after the fact but it was their idea to do so, not mine. It seems today that a kid can't be involved in a sport unless it is organized. What the hell happened to just a bunch of kids playing on the street or in a park, making up teams of their friends and playing a bunch of guys from a few streets over.

So you think the Olympics are all about show. I think they are about excellence. Can a kid have anyone better to look up to than a Bilodeau or a Hughes?

It's one thing to support, or even to admire, a political leader.

But the defensive worshipping of a leader is not only embarassingly servile-to-Power, it also reeks of subversion of the very principles of democracy.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

And in the cases-in-point above, this type of subversion is more like how Lewinski subverted Clinton.

What were thoughts on the camera hungry Layton, was he not playing politics to fighting for camera time in a crowded bar?

This thread is dumb. Our athletes and their coaches deserve all the credit, the politicians none.

Without funding from the government we wouldn't have done so well in these games. Don't be so naive please.

All 3 parties voted, no demanded this stimulus funding. Funny how the socialists keep forgetting that. Harper was forced by the other 3 parties to have this stimulus spending, nice try.

I'll say this again. Harper is without a doubt a great PM and his numbers will be steadily rising from now on as Canadians begin to see him as the PM who is restoring our national pride. Not listening to the Liberals and NDP who seem to believe that having national pride is a terrible thing. Just go over to Rabble.ca they think national pride is just awful, sad.

On a side note we all need to write PM Harper a thank you note for showing us Canadians that excellence in sport is indeed possible and that we want to continue to own the podium.

You have my thanks Mr. Harper, you are a great man with great vision and foresight. Much like a wise father mentoring his children, you guide us. Thank you.

You write this...

All 3 parties voted, no demanded this stimulus funding. Funny how the socialists keep forgetting that. Harper was forced by the other 3 parties to have this stimulus spending, nice try.

Then you end with this...

I'll let folks draw their own conclusions as to the intellectual level that could, within the space of a few paragraphs do this.

Much of that funding had been secured before Harper became Prime Minister, and British Columbia is bearing the brunt.
