Guys. Was this movie any good?

I keep thinking of watching it but am unsure. Rotten tomatoes gives it good marks but have heard some bad stuff too.

So what's the verdict?

This movie is outstanding....the opening scene tension (that villifies Nazis...as if that was needed) is worth the price of admission alone. Not for children.....

That's not what I said. I'm sure there are witty guys. But if you believed Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and to a lesser extent Jackie Brown, all hoods are ultra-expressive vocabularians. I'm not convinced.

well of course there are dullard criminals as well and movies are made about them too...but intelligent criminals are much more interesting...have you heard of Canada's retired super criminal Gerald Blanchard? young articulate, highly intelligent, his criminal exploits are the of the type movies are made of, I expect there will be a movie in his future...
We're talking about most of the German leadership ending up in a theater in Occupied France at the same time. Improbable doesn't even seem sufficient to describe it.
well those situations did occur...and the one major failed attempt on Hitler did include a number of the top leadership those not present were also to be dealt with...it didn't happen but that doesn't mean there weren't opportunities...the movie was fiction but all of it plausible...the lack of security around the theatre was unlikely...
His gifts seemed much more than charm. He is portrayed as being extraordinarily brilliant at his job.
so was Bundy unfortunately...

Leaving aside whether one thinks Tarantino sucks or not, he is an artist. You don't have to think he's a good artist...clealry you think he's terrible.

But he has no obligation to "offer [anything] to the world"--art does that by its nature, or so I would argue.

His movies contain so many familiar movie scenes because he isn't making movies about reality--he's making movies about movies.

As for the violence--well, I don't have a problem with it, personally. There are a zillion similarly violent scenes in a million movies. And here, it is NOT a clear-cut case of justified head-bashing. Rather, there is some moral ambiguity going on...but since it is a Jew killing a Nazi, we-the-audience can get a sort of almost-vicarious thrill from it.

In this way, the audince becomes complicit in the violence, which is an artistic move on the filmmaker's part (again, whether successful or not is entirely another matter).

And I agree that Tarantino is a funny-looking guy, but I don't know why you consider that part of his moral failing.

Tarantino is a classic parrot. You see this type in the art world - in the music buisness and in film..Because his life is so irrelevant and meaningless - he as a director producer seeks to find some sort of just cause - as in his case to get vengence through film - for the sake of some old Jewish auntie that he imagines was part of some holocaust -- he is picking at straws and trying to find some moral heroic high ground -

Having only seen the trailers it is a useless bit of film with nothing that is socially redeeming_ NOW that this director is rich and spoiled - he reminds me of one of our aging corporate types who support the war in Afganistan - that they might have had an uncle who was a MAN and fought in ww2 - now they want to be men while sitting in the board room - battling it out indirectly with some bearded goat herders who are MEN..old school men..real men - not just rich fools who know in their hearts they are weasils..Tarantino is a copy cat and a talentless weasil.

To add injury to insult for his little weasil - why did he not make a movie of intrigue that would interest and perhaps bring about closure to the world at large - Maybe a docu-drama about the national socialist Jews that assisted and advised Hitler prior ww2 - they existed and they have failed to come to be justly tried-- all point at Nazis but not what helped to faciltate and create them..that would make him very unpopular in Hollywood I guess - and money and fame are more important than historical contributions that would help to clear the air finally!

HE should do a movie called "What the hell were you thinking my dear?" - a movie about that rich Jewish lady and her very influential husband that gave Adolph Hitler a gift - his first very finely carved desk..where Hitler sat to finally do buisness that ended in the final solution..call it THE DESK---now that would be an impressive story..but that would mean that you would have benevolence and a social consciousness that was generating out into the world instead of sucking in the world like a hungry and famous bed bug.

Because it was a movie about killing Nazis...that's why...just like The Dirty Dozen! If you want an intriguing mdocudrama about justice and closure for the world miseries, them make your own damn movie!

That's not really surprising. My oldest kid was about ten or eleven and I remember watching 2001, and her getting bored. Does that mean 2001 is a bad movie?

not at all, he loves GI Joe watches it over and over and over, an absolute crap movie...my comment was in regards to a post stating it was not suitable for young kids, I don't censor my kids...I took my 10 to see Wolfman last week the ticket people told us it wasn't suitable for his age but we went in anyways...his favourite movies, anything with Zombies, he's seen them all...

Interesting. So you look up to these terrorist because they are "MEN"? Perhaps you'd like to sign your kids up with those "goat herders" so they don't rot away in our immoral society?

Then I'm sure you would think these films are also "suitable" for young kids:

A Clockwork Orange

Caligula

Clerks

Dead Presidents

Last Tango in Paris

Natural Born Killers

Pulp Fiction

Hard Candy

The Exorcist

Saw

Silence of the Lambs

Se7en

Pass the popcorn please! :P

So based on your own post many of those films are not suitable for at least one child, who is so easily "bored". May I suggest these films to perk his/her interest:

Behind the Green Door

Latex

Vampire Hookers

Birth of a Nation

Insatiable

I Am Curious Yellow

The Opening of Misty Beethoven

The Devil In Miss Jones

Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle

Every Woman Has a Fantasy

Seriously this movie is one of the most boring pieces of crap I have ever been unfortunate enough to see. Glad I waited for the DVD, I woulda been pissed off if I had wasted money on the theatre. Actually I probably would have walked out and into one of the other theatres, anything would have been more entertaining than this, even The Rock as the Tooth Fairy.
