A De Facto Palestinian State By 2011?

A glance suggests that this news tidbit has not been posted already, so I thought I would give it a go and see what others thought of it.

Reading the article, it seems very promising. The Palestinians in the West Bank seem to finally have a Prime Minister who wants to focus on building institutions and improving the lives of the Palestinian people, rather than focusing on the conflict with Israel. I wish them the best of luck in their endeavors. If the Palestinians can establish for themselves a viable, functioning, economy and government and security force, it will be much easier for them to make peace with Israel.

israel has already been given a border.

A border that was never respected by its Arab neighbours, which invaded repeatedly, seeking to annihilate Israel. A border that it was up to Israel to defend, the supposed "givers" of that border doing nothing to enforce it. It has been up to Israel to define and secure its own borders, in the face of repeated and relentless invasions and attacks.

However, this thread is not about Israel's borders, but about the Palestinian people finally trying to improve their own situation, rather than wasting themselves in futile conflict. Perhaps they will eventually succeed and build a viable state and make peace with Israel. That must really enrage you dub, you'll lose your fodder for demonizing Israel if that ever happens.

Israel's borders were not defined and recognized by any of the people that actually MATTER. Namely, Israel and her neighbours. It makes very little difference what the UN bureaucrats said Israel's borders were since its neighbours never respected them. Their neighbours still don't acknowledge them and thus your argument ends up being pretty hollow.

Why should we turn our backs to the UN that helped create our country?

We should accept and recognize the borders otherwise we're no better than those who do not recognize our country.
