It would sure be news to Northern Ireland readical Protestants that they have the same religious backgroun as the Catholics. Portuguese and Russian cultures, to take two examples, speak very different languages and are different cultures. And of course there is that European culture that gave us Einstein, Spinoza, Freud...

Russia has absorbed all sorts of influences, but culturally, I think it's still safe to say that Russia is largely a melding of Slavic and Byzantine Greek. Orthodox Christianity is not generally considered a "European" church, so far as I can ever tell. From rather early on, it was distinct from the Latin Church. I know some folks, for various reasons, like to paste over the considerable divide between Orthodox Christianity and Catholic Christianity.

Europeans have only productively lived together since the end of the Cold War, and that's if you ignore what goes on in the periphery, like the Balkans and neighboring states. Even discounting the Greek Civil War, the Iron Curtain, the Balkans War, the Russian "annexation-sort of" of South Ossetia, Europe has had about 64 years of peace, by all accounts probably the longest stretch since the height of the Roman Empire, but still, in a continent that was torn up by both major and minor conflicts for 1,500 years, I think we've got a ways to go before we declare Europe a peaceful place.

The only thing that really has convinced Europe to put aside the old animosities is first-hand knowledge of total war, and, just as importantly (if not more), economics.

As to Russia, it's long been a rather dangerous mistake to lump it in with Europe. Russia certainly has been heavily influenced by Europe, but it has long stood outside of Europe. I think there was a brief flowering of thought that Russia would enter tight relations with the EU, ultimately becoming a member state, full of democracy and love and Eurocrats and MEPs, but as we saw with the seizure of South Ossetia and the absolute humiliation of NATO in the process, Russia stands by itself, neither European nor Asian, though something of both.

You mention the Orthodox Church, and I find that amusing, because one of the most nationalistic aspects of modern Russia is the Church, which still keeps the old antagonisms against the Roman Church, and pretty much, by extension, all of European Christianity.

Our society was based on Christian religion. Yet we have strayed very far from those core beliefs. Perhaps more troubling is that we can never return to those morals and beliefs. The sands of time continue to fall and we cannot prevent them from doing so. Knowing these things we ought to be able to formulate a method of development that would serve our best interests. However, politics gets in the way to the same extent that religion does.

We need to embrace change, not reject it. It is time to stop rejecting concepts and simply saying no. Life is far more complicated than just saying no.
