Federal Public Safety Minister Peter van Loan is considering a run at the top job in the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, CBC News has learned.

Sources said Van Loan is talking to party members, trying to measure his support in the wake of John Tory's decision to step down once a successor is in place.

I wonder if he will be one of a few Feds to run.

I heard on the news that Dean Del Mastro, was thinking of it and all I gotta say the Ontario government would be in the same trouble as the House of Commons because Del Mastro is one of the smart-mouths Tories in the house! He's also a former foreign car salesman, so how would that be good for Ontario? Here's his bio. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Del_Mastro

Which party will be the first to adopt a Democracy 2.0 candidate ?

It would have to be a "NEW" party. Not to be mistaken with the other party with NEW in it.

IIRC Democracy 2.0 requires starting from scratch. For me that would mean dropping all currently registered parties.

Peter Van Loan. Wasn't he the former Minister for Democratic Renewal who tried to give Ontario 1 new seat in the House of Commons for every increase in population of 200,000 while he was going to give Alberta and B.C. 1 new seat for every increase in population of 100,000? Wasn't he the person who called the Premier of Ontario the "small man of confederation" for protesting this disparity?

Why would we elect a man premier who was prepared to deny the people of his own province equal democratic representation?

Wasn't Jack Layton a used car salesman at one time? Or is just that he looks used.

I don't know if he was or not but you don't seem to think much of him anyway. Even though I don't agree with Layton some some issues, he does ask very good questions of Harper that never get answered. He can't be all bad because the PM did work with him on the First Nations visit to the Commons.

Topaz, Jack's questions are soooo predictable. I especially liked the one about big-oil and big-ass. Good for a chuckle.

About Christine Elliott. Did you know she may run for the PC leadership? Imagine McGuinty, Horwath and Elliott battling it out in the Legislature.

As far as I know, McGuinty is leaving after his term.

Could very well be. Some think McGuinty wants to abandon a sinking ship.

While McGuinty has fiddled the province has burned.

As he fought with the federal finance minister and condemned the record of the Harris government the province slid into have-not status.

And so as it becomes more obvious that the province needs to go in a different direction the tolerance for a manager -- who is still desperately throwing money in the water hoping to calm the sea -- will diminish.

The public has little patience with a government that has spent so much to buy so little. McGuinty is a good politician and he can feel the tide turning.

Don't be surprised if he abandons the ship.

Anyone who currently does not have a provincial seat does not stand a chance. It looks like it will be a Harris crony who gets the top job, and I don't think the people of Ontario are ready for more slash & burn policies in this economy.

McGuinty, while a compentent manager, will never get my vote for his draconian pit bull ban.

That leaves the new ndp chick, Horwath. While it's hard to get excited about a feminist unionist, I've got no other choice.

Well, after Bob Rae's one and only NDP kick at the can in Ontario it would seem that it would be more likely that monkeys would fly out of your butt than the NDP would win again, to quote Wayne Campbell, aka Mike Myers.

Horwath is a hometown girl for those of us in the Hammer, but she still has quite a row to hoe to bring the NDP even a few more seats. I listened to some of her speeches during their leadership convention and what struck me was how she just parroted the same old, same old, 'Workers are always right and companies are to blame for everything" stuff we've heard from the Ontario NDP since at least 1966.

If they ever took some example from a modern socialist party like that of Tony Blair in Britain they might get some where but so far we've heard nothing to suggest its going to happen.

So we have little choice but to look to the other two parties and decide who reeks the least...

Yep, those scuzzbags are responsible for the slaughter of, as I understand it, 4000 mostly innocent dogs. That alone dosen't get our vote. Never mind the 4' long Pinnochio nose.

We bought cards to nominate a PC candidate in the last election, the process was foul beyond belief. Hope it's better organised the next time.

Well there is one way for the PCP to guarantee that the Liberals will be in power in Ontario for the next decade:

Conservative icon emerges from exile to help candidate Hudak

Just let Mike Harris back the leader of the party. By the time Harris escaped from provincial politics there were many people wanting his hide for tearing up our institution and being involved in killing people. If Hudak gets in then I would suggest that he will just be another Harris clone.

Having Mike Harris work on Hudak's campaign would be like having Stephan Dion back Joe Clark.....one of these things is not like the other....and we don't need another Ontario tornado involved in politics.

The Ontario Liberals have a sure thing if Hudak gets the party leadership......

If the NDP even double their seat count that will be an accomplishment and looking at the potential ridings, there doesn't appear like many more could go NDP then the Currnent 17 seats that the Feds control. That would appear to be the ceiling for the Ontario NDP.

You may be correct. However, your hometown girl is attracting alot of media attention. What she does to reach out to others is more important then a fickly media.

Right now, the Ontario Liberals act like a government in a constant state of tinkering and dealing with simple issues while maintaining a deer in the headlights approach to the massive job losses that have occurred during their terms in power.

The PCs, well, have to wait and see. As people jump into the game, the media will pay more attention to the PC leadership campaign. The media completely ignored the NDP campaign, but then appeared interested "after" it was over. This could be for a number of reasons. Andrea is a (pretty/tough) combo and a women. And John Tory, just got tossed out of politics 24 hours before she was selected.

A little bit of fate there.

Perhaps there could be life in the 2011 election, the 07 was a snooze fest.

Maybe Flaherty will come back to Ontario. He gets so angry in the House and its not good for his health and his wife, Christine Elliott, is a member of the party and this would bring him home to his family and he could be the boss instead of Harper!

He's sending his wife instead ...

OTTAWA — Supporters of federal Human Resources Minister Diane Finley are testing the waters for a possible run for the leadership of Ontario's Progressive Conservatives, raising a new prospect that family ties from the provincial race could make waves in Stephen Harper's Conservative Party in Ottawa.

At the same time, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino has called some Ontario Tory organizers to see if he would have support if he ran, Conservative insiders say.

Neither has yet mounted the kind of organized team that front-runner Tim Hudak has set in place to replace John Tory.

But a bid by Ms. Finley, whose husband Doug Finley is Mr. Harper's powerful campaign manager, would add a new wrinkle to a provincial contest that holds the potential to create rifts among federal Tories.

Christine Elliott, the MPP for Whitby-Ajax and wife of Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, is already lining up a campaign. Ms. Finley's entry would raise the prospect of federal Conservatives from Ontario squeezed between two power couples.

"Talk about the battle of the spouses," said one organizer who had been contacted by supporters of Ms. Finley.

I don't think the PC's will select a leader who doesn't already have a seat.

In Ontario Conservative circles, Ms. Finley would face a party wary of any leadership candidate who does not have a seat at Queen's Park, the provincial legislature. Mr. Tory's efforts to run the party from outside the legislature ended in debacle. He lost a safe seat in a by-election March 5.

But I won't underestimate the party from its ability to shoot itself in the foot.
