Busloads of Obama fans not welcome, Ottawa says

The Canadian Press

February 4, 2009

Ottawa -- Canuck fans of Barack Obama appear to be out of luck.

A group of Obama-maniacs from the Toronto area wants to bring four busloads of fans to a welcome rally in Ottawa when the U.S. President visits Feb. 19.

But the government isn't allowing any group gatherings on Parliament Hill that day because of security concerns.

Mr. Obama's schedule is pretty much all work and no play, including meetings with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and opposition leaders.

Ummm ... exCUSE me!!??!!

We can't exercise our right of freedom to assemble and speak?

SAYS WHO?

Well ... NOW we might be ticked off!

Security rules over democracy?

Yes, I know Obama truly needs protection.

I just wish it didn't make "Ottawa" so happy.

I just wish we could all go to greet Obama, as a breath of fresh air in North American and world politics, as many people were/are planning to.

And send a message to "Ottawa".

Busloads of Obama fans not welcome, Ottawa says

Oh yeah?!?

Well ...

"Ottawa" sucks!

I say.

funny innit?

Our politicians are so scared of facing Canadians they're pulling up the drawbridge on the moat to keep us out.

What does that tell us??

They should all be scared to face us.

Blithering idiots all of them!

--

Unworthy even for schoolkids to go and observe the 'hallowed halls' of our legislatures, because the kids are appalled by the behaviour they see: bullying and attack. It's all banned from schools. They know it when they see it because they report it at school, and they are appalled that that's how our 'governments' act.

-end non-partisan rant- ;)

So you think that it was all Harper and Obama had no input into this? Dream on. Canada lets in way more Militant Muslims than the US does so I'm sure he's worried about being killed by an Islamic terrorist residing here in Canada. A group of 20 Islamic terrorists planned to storm the Hill and decapitate our PM. This was a decision put down by Obama and the Secret Service, they told Harper to take it or we won't come.

It has nothing to do with security for the public but security for the powers that be. That's why in the public forum of say talk radio - they have screeners. The people who own and control media are the same people that instruct our PM - and he can not rat out the ones that installed him. So it's his sworn duty to his masters to shut anyone up that might harm the current state of affairs and their vested interests...simple. He is just doing his job. Do you really believe you can say anything you want in this country, or any other country. There must be freedom of speech and it must be curtailed to a degree...Prime example - no one in the USA is allowed to say - If Saudi Arabia financed 911 and terrorist plus the take over of our religious core in the west though the building of mosques to overwhelm what's left of Christianity....You just can't say that - You can invade Iraq - you can diverty all attention to Afghanistan and Iran and even Israel but you are not allowed to point out the real villians -- cos the villians are friends or our villians...That's the system and SHUT UP.

Acknowledged above.

Link to the 'terrorists' who wanted to decapitate Harper?

Are they still available?

Off with his head? Don't you have to be king to say that? The terrorist punks are not very kingly to say the least --- maybe they should have cut off their own heads and sent them to Ottawa as a protest - now that would have been effective - but they are not that committed are they?

I read that his visit is going to be very short anyway. More of a pitstop than a visit.

I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't laugh but it's 1:30 am and I can't sleep. That was very funny.

The busloads of "Obama-maniacs" can assemble and speak if they wish. However, Parliament Hill need not make itself available for such a gathering. And President Obama need not make himself available to Canadian mobs if he chooses not to.

If Parliament Hill can be closed off to provide a showcase for 40-foot tall snow-sculptures, or closed off to provide a venue for some god-awful MuchMusic dance-party, or closed off to provide a stage for god-awful 3rd-rate Canadian performers on Canada Day, it can surely be closed off for the performing of actual work.

Perhaps some day President Obama will bring his 3-inch thick bulletproof glass aquarium with him when he comes to Canada, and can meet the adoring multitudes then.

Or perhaps the "Obama-maniacs" will just have to wait 8 years, after which they'll undoubtedly have the chance to meet President Obama at some $1000-a-plate dinner.

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.

I kind of like being called an 'Obama-Maniac'. A refreshing change from 'God-less Socialist' and 'Stick Waving Leftie'.

I suspect that fans will try to find a way to at least catch a glimpse. He's only here for 5 hours.

I remember years ago when Trudeau visited Kingston and adoring fans lined the streets. He went on our local radio call-in show, which just happened to be one number off from ours. My husband was still in bed when the phone rang. I answered and a gruff voice said "I want to talk to the Prime Minister".

I couldn't resist so handed the phone to my barely awake hubby. The guy on the end of the phone started ranting about something. I was in the next room in tears I was laughing so hard. I kept hearing "what?" .... "Who is this?"

I was voting PC at the time and it cracked me up. I wonder what the poor sap told his grandkids about his conversation with the Prime Minister.

I'm sure Trudeau will forgive you for not voting for his majesty. Your socialist god, even though he did much more to destroy Canada than to help it.

Socialist God? Where did that come from? It was just a funny story. Coming from a Catholic family who voted Liberal all their lives, I was an outcast (only figuratively). Even my dad thought the story was funny and he loved Trudeau.

You're singing to the choir.

"You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not kill: and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment."

Did you use that as a reference when you said you couldn't care less if they killed each other off.(Israel and Palestine). How do you justify war? And don't give me the tired 'eye for an eye'. As Ghandi says it only makes the whole blind.

But they did not close off the Hill when president Bush came to visit in, think it was October 2003. There was thousands of protesters there, some giving speeches to crowds of hundreds right on the hill. Protesters marched in parades around the city streets all day, and anyone could walk around on the Hill. Why was this allowed? Who was in power in the federal government then?

I say this is purely political. They are thinking about the press releases and videos that will follow, showing what would be in this case thousands of CHEERING Canadians, not booing as they were in 2003, not needing to be followed, chased through the streets by troops of armed riot police in full uniforms as it was then, but happy, peaceful celebrations. Ask yourself, why is this not being allowed?

The answer seems clear to me, it's not a security concern, but the fact that so many might show support for this Democrat, with his Liberal leaning ideas, the man who speaks about equality and fairness, about closing Gitmo, reaching out to find common ground with others around the world instead of dictating military terms.

And this flies right in the face of our current government, which is nothing more than a propped-up remnant of the Bush era.

Hence, there will be no group gatherings permitted, the gates will be closed. Political machinations that would more suit Red China than a true democracy. This is the attitude of the CPC, to silence public opposition to their ideologies.

Er, the throngs of liberal minded and/or confused Canadians are fully able of gathering elsewhere, and the cameras and riot police can follow them there, if necessary or desired.

Pure foolishness. If you knew ANYTHING about American politics, you would know that Obama and the democrats in general in the USA would be considered EXTREME right-wingers in Canada.

You're right, some of them are. Obama doesn't support SSM or abortion and his greenhouse gas targets are weaker than that of the Canadian government.

Obama is popular in part because he is introducing social reforms that resonate with Liberals and leftist ideas. He talks about creating a new accountablility, payroll caps for executives in public funding, government oversight of markets, health care reform, free health care for children. Things that many Liberal and leftist Canadians believe in. This is in contrast to policies and ideas from the CPC, which were (up until recently) all about deregulation, privatization, increased military adventurism, private health care.

On the whole the US is much more right-wing than Canada. A realistic comparison may show Obama as being more right-wing in some ways that Harper, but this is all about perception and the media, and how it affects the attitude of the voting public. In other words, the more people love Obama, the less they love the ideas of the CPC.

The more people love Obama, the more they are going to be disappointed. Besides, what's with all the swooning and love? He's just a politician who is saying what he thinks people want to hear.
