Would be suicide for Harper, first it would show he has lost confindence before going to vote. Second it gives time for the Libs to bring in a new leader, third it would allow a coalition to strengthen ties with Leader Obama a man the Tories smeared during his election.

Unless the Tories can get a majority next election his party is doomed LOL!

He didn't yet, but they're saying he will.

Can't blame him. This buys his strategists time, if they can spin a message that what the opposition parties did was wrong and subverts democracy (the opp. do have that right however) and the electorate buys it, the opposition parties are in serious trouble. Watch for attack ads.

So harper shut her down until the budget vote? Not the bravest thing to do, but probably the smartest.

Parliament normally does shut down for quite a while over the Christmas break. And once this is done it will be even harder for the Opposition to make a case for why they are unseating him. I mean, we all know they want to do it anyway. But they'll have even less of a fig leaf of cover since it'll be so close to the budget - and the economic stimulus they say we need so desperately.

And I absolutely guarantee that not one of them will have the balls to tell the truth. They need to have that fig leaf to pretend they're doing this "to save Canada" and not merely for their own self interest.

If Harper prorogues parliament then it will be the end of his career as Prime Minister. He will have led directly into the Coalition's argument that he does not have the confidence to move forward - especially since we are facing an economic crisis and immediate action must be taken. By not facing the issue of a Coalition, he will have admitted defeat.

He would have one saving move, in my opinion. He would have to approach the Liberals and ask them to agree (at whatever cost) to work on the economy. He can no longer rule like a tyrant and he must be willing to government in a full consensus democracy with the opposition. After all that is what a minority government represents.

He really is in a no win situation. Either he compromises and joins forces in getting out of this economic crisis together, or he loses complete control of the ship and let's the left lead the way on their own.

Well, how's clinging to the power at all cost going to gain this government greater confidence with the Parliament? That is the condition, yes, very reasonable and democratic, of the minority government, and Harper has spent that confidence dry with his nastiness and partisan gimmicks. Prolonging his hold onto the power for a few more weeks would, if anything, be very revealing indeed. He'll be telling everybody open text that power is the one and only thing he's there for, not the well being of the country that requires mature, balanced and non-partisan act in this challenging time. And the attack ads would only strengthen already pretty clear picture about their nastiness and partisanship. No, these folks are just not up to the task, they simply aren't getting it.

How will it be the end of his career? He is extremely close in time to laying out a budget. He has every right to prorouge parliament; it's chaos. That's an easier sell to the electorate than this coalition.

Harper is in a great situation, he can sit back, lay attack ad upon attack ad, lay out a budget, and go to the polls with all the ammunition in the world.

Shut down parliament until the budget.

His budget comes out in less than two months and parliament is in chaos, that's a perfectly acceptable reason to prorogue parliament.

There is some question as to the legality of not having a supply bill done before proroguing Parliament. The Governor General might refuse.

Harper doesn't have to get a budget through. It would be a feather in his cap if he did. The only reason Harper should prorogue parliament is to buy time for the budget, other than that it is not necessary as the gov't will be defeated anyway. IMO getting a budget through is very very important.

Wrong!!! The tories have a huge donation base. All they have to do is say paid for by the conservative party on their ads and they are in the clear. Every Canadian knows that the tories pay for their own ads. Genius pure genius.

What taxpayers are going to see is business's being gouged so the looney left can throw money around. Other countries are protecting their business's, the looney left wants to punish ours!! Have fun running a campaign on that

The Reformer's are doomed...If Harper prorogues the House,he will look even weaker than he does now.The only reason he would do this is to blow out the Con warchest and go into a full blown PR blitz until January. He can go back to the NCC and rail about public health care and his love of an Alberts fire wall....
