This is very, very troubling. He used the RCMP to steal the last election so this shouldn't surprise anyone. All the pretend press conferences the conservatives are having on this campaign, are really only approved press asking scripted questions. Harper travels with a gang of RCMP that he uses to keep the REAL press and protesters away. Notice that Harper never has to respond to any uncomfortable questions at these so called press conferences like the other leaders do, when they do campaign stops. The Canadian public is being duped. kengs333 Posted September 25, 2008 Author Report Posted September 25, 2008 Of course Harper travels with a gang of RCMP, he is the Prime Minister after all. Does the President of the US travel without the Secret Service? Their job isn't to keep the media away from him, though. The fact that they do so smacks of authoritarianism. Not to mention the fact that it says much about how he regards his candidates: incapable of holding their own when forced to answer questions that may be difficult, that force them to think for themselves... This is so not a big deal. Harper is an autocrat. He likes to manage everything. Good on him for taking the bulk of the responsibility. When he starts infringing on your rights maybe then you should start talking evil dictator, but not until. Oh, that's right, we should just bite our tongues until it becomes overwhelmingly obviously, just like it has always been done in the past. We don't want to be jumping the gun here on the whole dictator thing, heaven forbid we try to do something about it while we still can. Quote

Strange way to be accountable, keeping the press away from the prime minister so he doesn't have to answer any unscripted questions. It seems like an abuse of authority to me. the media are supposed to keep the public informed, how can they do that when they are only allowed to ask certain questions? I think Canadians better get used to having a lot more abuse of authority if they elect this, deceptive man. I feel like there should be one of those fine print warning at the bottom of the conservative campaign ads just like on the pharmaceutical commercials: conservative governments may cause massive cuts to our social safety nets, abuse of authority and police states. If you experience any of these symtoms you have just elected steven harper, please bend over spread your legs and kiss your freedom lovin ass goodbye Quote
Topaz Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 That can be a good thing as Canadians will never know how close they came to electing Citoyen Dion as PM. Capricorn, Canadians know what the Harper government is all about. Secrets, lies and personal attacks, void answers the questions, silence SOME of the press, remove people from their jobs or pressure them to quit, never admit you were wrong, never force any member of the Con minister to resign and the list goes on. I've never heard Harper say he loved his country and I can only ID him with the oil and gas industry but most of all he is a promise breaker and with that Canadians can not TRUST him. Dion may not come off as FORCEFUL as Harper, but after listening to him I believe he does love Canada and wants the best for Canada and that he hasn't or will not break his word to Canadians. Quote

Canada doesn't have enough troops it been in the press, so if you are going to keep the military in war theatre, you have have the personnel, right? AngusThermopyle Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 so if you are going to keep the military in war theatre, you have have the personnel, right? If you aren't getting enough through volunteers, then you have to force people to do it. This type of reasoning just blows me away. The people who make such statements appear to have this amazing ability to disregard reality and propound baseless ideas as fact. Not one person making such statements can point to one shred of fact or evidence to support such a view. They just ramble on about how they think this will happen then expect everyone to breathlessly say "oh my god, you're right, we're all going to be draffted". Such a truly daft premise. Oh I don't know, the last gov't in Canada that tried conscription which was in WW1 got smoked in the election and helped put quebec on the path to seperation, if the toaster thinks that's going to happen, may I suggest getting a Kenwood Toaster radio.
