A Canadian talks of America?

Since Canada involves more fundamental, passionate divides, I have always found Canadian politics more dramatic than American politics.

Yet in this 2008 American presidential election/cycle/quadrennial, for almost the first time, Americans are seeing how divisive politics can be: a black man against a white woman. (In Canada, we have had elections across religion and language divides for over a century. To understand this, imagine that Obama spoke with one distinct accent and Palin with another. eg. Catholic Laurier, in 1896, became PM despite his French accent.)

Still, I admire America's ability to leave this decision to the chance of ordinary Americans. Russian and Chinese politicians look foolish beside American politicians.

Whoever becomes president and vice-president, you Americans should take tremendous pride in how you choose your leaders. Between Obama and McCain, there are tremendous differences. If Obama wins, America takes one direction. If McCain wins, America takes another direction.

No one now knows who will be president. No conspiracy group knows. Obama and McCain are very different people. Heck, Palin and Biden are even more different. America has two very different possible directions. And no one knows what will happen.

If America chose its leaders by flipping a coin, it would be miles ahead of such backward States as Russia, China and Saudi Arabia where future leaders are pre-determined.

America is a great state because its government is left to chance. In this, America is a truly stable society. No one knows who will be president. Maybe it will be Obama, maybe McCain. Maybe a woman will be vice-president. But everyone knows that in 2009, there will be a US president and there will be a vice-president, female or not.

In backward states such as Russia, China and Saudi Arabia, the "State" speaks endlessly of stability but no one knows what government there will be next year.

I suspect that when August speaks in such terms, he is expressing his confidence in his opinions and analysis, not sharing the fruits of time-travel.

Yep. Yet that doesn't stop people from making pronouncements on the outcome. Of course, it's easy to do so when you won't be held accountable for your predictions. I'll tell you this much: if Obama wins, you won't hear the end of it from me.
