Here's one that was really horrible yet participated in the largest airborne operation of WW2 (Not Market Garden: the Battle of Kanev and the Dneiper Crossing.) Also a version carried two Polikarpov I-16s under each wing. Featured in IL-2 Sturmovik (the simulator).

Thats cool! It was made of steel, can you believe that! The fighters under the wings are very cool too. I didn't know about this plane, thanks for the link DoP.

Speaking of Polikarpov I-16s. One repainted into Spanish Civil War markings. There are many I-16s still out there...many, many thousands were made.

The I-17. Now there's a rare one. Several produced...all saw combat during Barbarossa (1941 campaign). Looked kind of like the MiG-3 with a huge twin blade prop. MiG took over from Polikarpov after this model.

I think one of the most amazing aircraft ever is the XB70 Valkyrie.

It was conceived during the height of the cold war, as a means of delivering a very large amount of nuclear destruction, extremely quickly. It was a ghastly mission, of course, and one that was rendered obsolete by the arrival of the ICBM. Nonetheless, the Valkyrie is an astounding feat of engineering, particularly that the design was begun over 50 years ago and that the prototypes were in the air during the early 1960s.

It was as large as a B-52, yet had a top speed of over Mach 3, faster than any jet fighter that's in active duty today. Although the project ceased to be of military value during the early 1960s, it continued on as a testbed for aeronautics research for several years afterward.

Two prototypes were built. The first one survives and is in an aviation museum. The second one incorporated design and manufacturing lessons learned from the first, and achieved the Mach 3 goal set for the project. Tragically, the second prototype was destroyed in a mid-air collision, when its tail was clipped by an F-104 sucked into its wake during a formation flight for a photo-op.

It is still an amazing feat of engineering, and so pretty. It is also apparently the loudest aircraft ever.

My favorite was the old Beaver float plane..I grew up on a lake and the back yard was a great place to view planes landing and taking off. There were a lot of smaller float planes that use to back up to our dock and let it rip - the power was really neat and to feel the spray was excieting - but when a big motored Beaver would land on occassion - it was a thrill - the engine was four times the size of the average - with a seating capcity of about 12 - man it was powerful - barely got out of the water - Speaking of sea planes - when I was 13 one crashed on take off...so I took the oar boat out and my "Mike Nelson" mask and snorkel - dove down and entered though a broken window - I guess the guy kicked it out to get out -

I got in real crap for salvaging his seats , compass and wallet - My mum gave me a slap when the downed flyer came to the house for his stuff - She was smart - she slapped my face in front of him - The poor guy felt so sorry for me that he just went away as if he was the diving thief - Mum was a clever woman - sure was a hell of a hit though - wish she took some acting classes.

An old boss of mine worked on that project way back. It was truely a great aircraft in the making, but much like the B-58 Hustler, the concept of supersonic bombers seemed obsolete when viewed next to ICBMs. It took Ronnie Raygunz to bring the US supersonic bomber back from the brink in the form of the B-1.

You guys sure know your planes....If the good lord wanted us to fly he would have killed all the birds. Then there would have been no need for flying - damned birds,,, giving us all these high falooting ideas----now we wanna go to mars - thanks a lot you crazy sparrow..

If you want to be a bird

Why don't you try a little flying

There's no denying

It gets you high

Why be shackled to your feet

When you've got wings

You haven't used yet

Don't wait for heaven

Get out and fly

One pound of mini-turkey has been known do be a real downer - My childhood buddie took my flying - and I was a white knuckle case - he used to roll cars - and everything went wrong..stall indicator - frozen lines - continuious loss of altitude do to being over loaded - at on lasting the a wheel was flat - not much of a saftey walk about - I was terrified the whole trip and the hang over did not help - "God get me down - I promise to be good" - it was cool - when we were kids we said we would fly together and we did..that part was good.

This is interesting, I didn't know anything about it, the new Chinese H-8 Stealth Bomber slated to become operational in 2010. She sure is pretty, I wonder what her capabilities are.

The new JH-7 Fighter Bomber looks pretty conventional though, I don't think there's anything new there. Don't get me wrong, its probably a very capable fighter bomber, just nothing special.

China has an invisable bomber - oh no...wonder if they will sneak up on us and give us a little nuking when things get to crowded and sooty over there...someone should tell them they can't have nukes - Iranians are not allowed so why not China - and pesky Israel...what the heck lets disarm the Russians and let Obama have the only boma.

The AC-130 "Spooky" has always been one of my favourites, from the Viet Nam era versions to the newest ones. With the weapons and sensor upgrades she's a very potent aircraft, it's actually gained an almost legendary status.

That guy Richard Machowicz the Future Weapons host has just about one of the coolest jobs I can imagine, he's paid to play with big toys. ;)

The original 'Spooky' was of, course, a coverted C-47 Dakota/DC-3. Also known as: 'Puff The Magic Dragon'. It was armed first with a battery of 10 WW2 vintage .30 cal Browning M2/M1919s, then got it's miniguns after that. Replaced by the AC-119, then the AC-130 Hercules. The modern AC-130s are indeed fearsome weapons. There's the Spector and the Spooky with different load-outs. A few YouTube clips are available of them at work.

As a side note, back when I used to use Combat Flight Simulator 2, several of us would fly the AC-47 (converted from a virtual DC-3  ) around IndoChina having a (literal) blast. Good range so you could island hop. Here's the FS2004 version...CFS2's looked identical. The cockpit was super realistic with everything working as per real life.

The Avro Vulcan is one of my all time favourites. The big loud delta carving around the airfield was an awesome sight. It was regarded as the signature aircraft of the Abbotsford Airshow from the late sixties almost until they went out of service. At one time the airport was trying to get a Vulcan to use as a gate aircraft but the cost and logistics proved just too much for their budget.

Massive plane.

Yes, it was a major part of the early Abbotsford Airshows. They'd usually send a Victor as well (tanker version)...but it wasn't the show stealer that the Vulcan was. Did you ever make it to Arlington's airshows of the same period? Arlington Washington...not Virginia. Often many of the Abbotsford performers would end up there for the giant fly-in breakfasts and entertainment. Not sure if they do now, though as Arlington has gotten much more commercial as of late.

We used to go to the drag races at Arlington in the sixties before they built SIR in Seattle. Went to an EAA fly in at Arlington about twenty years ago but nothing since. At the time it was the biggest EAA event after Oshkosh and the Sun Fun. Don't know if it still is.

Bigger than ever...but, more commercial as mentioned. Wonderful setting, too. Mt Baker, et al. Click the one link in my previous post to go to Arlington EAA site.

One nice thing about living a few miles to the north east of YXX is getting to hear lots of big round engines go overhead as Conair's DC 6's and Firecat's (modified Grumman S2's) come and go from the tanker base in Kamloops. Most people have to pay money for that.

Same deal up here. One of the runways takes the aircraft over the city at very low altitude with a full load. Same types for the most part...the odd Lockheed Electra, as well.

Caught a bit of the airshow yesterday at the EX.

My favourite was the Spitfire arcing overhead. What classic lines! The eleptical wings are so iconic even a blind man could recognise it.

If the Spit had more range, it would have been the best aircraft of WW2. That however was its main hold back...it was mainly just a home defence interceptor. Up...shoot shoot shoot...down.
