Here's one that was really horrible yet participated in the largest airborne operation of WW2 (Not Market Garden: the Battle of Kanev and the Dneiper Crossing.) Also a version carried two Polikarpov I-16s under each wing. There are many I-16s still out there...many, many thousands were made. The I-17. Now there's a rare one. Several produced...all saw combat during Barbarossa (1941 campaign). Looked kind of like the MiG-3 with a huge twin blade prop. It was conceived during the height of the cold war, as a means of delivering a very large amount of nuclear destruction, extremely quickly. It was a ghastly mission, of course, and one that was rendered obsolete by the arrival of the ICBM. Nonetheless, the Valkyrie is an astounding feat of engineering, particularly that the design was begun over 50 years ago and that the prototypes were in the air during the early 1960s. It was as large as a B-52, yet had a top speed of over Mach 3, faster than any jet fighter that's in active duty today. Although the project ceased to be of military value during the early 1960s, it continued on as a testbed for aeronautics research for several years afterward. Two prototypes were built. The first one survives and is in an aviation museum. The second one incorporated design and manufacturing lessons learned from the first, and achieved the Mach 3 goal set for the project. It is also apparently the loudest aircraft ever. -k My favorite was the old Beaver float plane..I grew up on a lake and the back yard was a great place to view planes landing and taking off. There were a lot of smaller float planes that use to back up to our dock and let it rip - the power was really neat and to feel the spray was excieting - but when a big motored Beaver would land on occassion - it was a thrill - the engine was four times the size of the average - with a seating capcity of about 12 - man it was powerful - barely got out of the water - Speaking of sea planes - when I was 13 one crashed on take off...so I took the oar boat out and my "Mike Nelson" mask and snorkel - dove down and entered though a broken window - I guess the guy kicked it out to get out - I got in real crap for salvaging his seats , compass and wallet - My mum gave me a slap when the downed flyer came to the house for his stuff - She was smart - she slapped my face in front of him - The poor guy felt so sorry for me that he just went away as if he was the diving thief - Mum was a clever woman - sure was a hell of a hit though - wish she took some acting classes. With the weapons and sensor upgrades she's a very potent aircraft, it's actually gained an almost legendary status. That guy Richard Machowicz the Future Weapons host has just about one of the coolest jobs I can imagine, he's paid to play with big toys. DogOnPorch Posted August 31, 2008 Author Report Posted August 31, 2008 The original 'Spooky' was of, course, a coverted C-47 Dakota/DC-3. Also known as: 'Puff The Magic Dragon'. It was armed first with a battery of 10 WW2 vintage .30 cal Browning M2/M1919s, then got it's miniguns after that. Replaced by the AC-119, then the AC-130 Hercules. The modern AC-130s are indeed fearsome weapons. There's the Spector and the Spooky with different load-outs. A few YouTube clips are available of them at work. As a side note, back when I used to use Combat Flight Simulator 2, several of us would fly the AC-47 (converted from a virtual DC-3 ) around IndoChina having a (literal) blast. Good range so you could island hop. Here's the FS2004 version...CFS2's looked identical. It was regarded as the signature aircraft of the Abbotsford Airshow from the late sixties almost until they went out of service. At one time the airport was trying to get a Vulcan to use as a gate aircraft but the cost and logistics proved just too much for their budget. At one time the airport was trying to get a Vulcan to use as a gate aircraft but the cost and logistics proved just too much for their budget. Massive plane. Yes, it was a major part of the early Abbotsford Airshows. They'd usually send a Victor as well (tanker version)...but it wasn't the show stealer that the Vulcan was. Did you ever make it to Arlington's airshows of the same period? Arlington Washington...not Virginia. Often many of the Abbotsford performers would end up there for the giant fly-in breakfasts and entertainment.
