Would you prefer we continue subsidizing drivers in Venezuela and the Middle East? We are paying excessively so Venezuelans can Fill their tank for less than a buck.

We? I don't believe we import a lot of their oil. The US on the otherhand....

Saudi Arabia and Venezuela subsidize their own oil to their own market....

Canada imports about a million barrels per day from Norway because it is less expensive than building a pipeline, and we export 25% of our oil to the US. If Venezuela can afford to have its people fill their cars for about a buck, we can afford a domestic oil price. The high cost of fuel is going to push Canada into a major recession.

So who do you suggest pay for the subsidy? Me?

No need for anyone to subsidize anything, the federal government should simply direct oil companies to give a bigger share of their profits to Canadians. It is our oil after all.

I'd prefer a more direct shift of taxes away from income and onto carbon but now that everyone seems to be coming to the consensus that GW is myth a carbon tax seems silly. Instead, some form of nationalization should be in order.

So I take it then you would be okay for exploration companies to directly bill Canadians for the start up costs? You know, it does cost money to actually get the oil out of the ground...

...or do you just propose an authoritarian government order the companies to lose money?

I guess that would go for gold, silver, shit lets not forget those pretty artic diamonds all ours.....

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

We're up to $3.85/gal. Is it still going up in Canada, too?

A bell weather thread. So does America adjust, or does America make everybody else adjust? Guess where this is going?

I think the question is irrelevant. America doesn't set the price of oil.

The UK is also a producer...slightly more in production than used.

(that's why their price is 'as low as Norway  )

War bicycle: " If Venezuela can afford to have its people fill their cars for about a buck, we can afford a domestic oil price. "

Ya sure, and then we'll spend the same amount per capita as the 'Great' Chavez does on Health, Education, etc... Hint Alberta's GDP is a lot greater than that of Venezuela...Ontario's is double. And you want to reduce health and education per capita to about a nickel on the dollar to match Venezuela? Let's get this straight...take 3 bucks off of a gallon of gas and take that money out of social services? Close hospitals and schools to feed cars?

They have until now.

Could be we are on the cusp of a truly egalitarian world where options are on the table like apples at the supermarket.

On the pther hand, we might be entering a world where bullets decide policy.

Which of these do you think is enshrined in the Declaration and the gifting of the Statue of Liberty?

This was in response to American Woman and her post <<America makes everyone else adjust! Right?>>

Isn't that against the law now? I thought we had all sorts of international agreements against this sort of thing.

You'r confusing international law with trade agreements and quite frankly I don't know if they are aprties to any trade agreements regarding oil....not likely since no one is exporting oil to those nations so no one's trade is affected.;
