A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

Crazy rings a bell.

Yeah, I heard about this on the news last night. It wasn't even her suggestion to name the teddy bear, she let her students decide instead.

Good way to drive off educators and keep the populace ignorant though.

The teacher was sentenced to 15 days in jail and then deportation to the UK. No lashes so far so I suppose the Sudanese government can claim the sentence was "soft".

I just hope she stays safe while in custody. This will be the longest 15 days of her life.

A BBC commentator said he thought it was the Sudanese government slapping the west on the wrist for its recent sanctions and what not. I guess they couldn't find an American to stone to death.

The piece included a brief interview with the Sudanese Ambassador who smirked as he said that the government could not interfere in the process of law.

There was also a British Moslem cleric who expressed horror at the whole thing.

If anything happens to her in confinement, I imagine the Sudanese will be very sorry.

Shouldn't these children know better by this age? After all their indoctrination since birth, they should know not to name a teddy bear after the sacred prophet!

/sarcasm

Stupid people, stupid religion.

We should all make cute stuffed effigies of "Mohammed" and drop them from airplanes all over the middle east. We could make it laugh like tickle me Elmo

No need for sarcasm here at all. Your question is totally valid, and those children should know better since they are grown up in the Muslim religion. The children should have been horrified.

I say all those kids are just as guilty and should be punishable by Sharia Law. Yes I am going to get flack from this, but it would be hypocritical of the Sudanese government to punish the Infidel, and not the children for slandering that Mohamed prophet guy.

But like all religions, the powers that be play favorites.

Maybe, just maybe these kids are not as "indoctrinated" as we are led to believe.

You are correct Gost, if they had been raised as staunch muslims they would have been horrified at the prospect of "seeing" their prophet.

Truly a sick bunch of people. Hey, where are all the moderates who should be marching in Sudan protesting this womans treatment, after all aren't the moderates the vast majority as I'm always being told?

If you were a moderate, would you stay in the Sudan?

If you knew anything about the religion, you would know that the position of the Sudanese government is alot of things, but hypocritical it is not.

I suspect the 'offence' is not nearly as serious as the Sudan government complains and that they are simply using the teacher to score cheap political points.

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

I hope the TO police have enough police on hand to watch over the angry protests by Muslim moderates at this kind of treatment of a fellow westerner. After all, Islam is a religion of peace, not oppression, right?

I'm pretty sure she did not suggest the name for the bear but the class did. She simply ok'd the name. So the kids should definitely haev known better and it is plain dumb ignorance on her part, however perhaps she should have known better as she was living and working in a strict muslim society.

Leg room, there is none.

I wonder how many kids in her class or in the school are named Mohamed. Don't many Muslim families name their kids Mohamed? There's nothing kids like more than hearing the sound of their own name, except of course if they're being reprimanded. So it would not be surprising that the kids picked the name and the teacher accepted simply to please the kids to facilitate her lessons.

I hope she is safe and away from those calling for her head.

I find it odd they are calling for her head now too. The law in place has some room as far as sentencing goes, it is a fine and a jail sentence or 40 lashes. If a Sudanese national had committed this crime, I am fairly sure they would not put them to death. This is as many have stated, peoples Imam's spouting hatred and creating a bigger international spectacle than it was. It was a god damned teddy bear after all. I am sure this woman will be kept safe and those that have the responsibility to do so and have sentenced her will not behead someone for such a petty reason. There is no precedent for beheading here, the law was already in place, this is just extremists blowing themselves up.

Leg room, there is none.

I don't blame the teacher of course. But neither do I blame those children. I don't think they should have known better. I don't think I would have known better. Mohammed may be the name of a so-called prophet but its also a popular Islamic name and it would seem completely natural to me for the children to name the bear Mohammed. It's a very popular name in Britain. You don't usually see a great deal of outrage over people naming their children Mohammed. And although children are not teddy bears, I don't think anyone could say that a Teddy Bear has much of a negative connotation. Nope, this smacks of a people who are deliberately looking for any ridiculous reason to demand the execution of a westerner.

Would anyone care if someone named a teddy bear "Jesus the Pooh"?

Well there are probably some nuts who would care, but I don't think you'd see anyone arrested or any great demand for an execution.

No wonder this part of the world is plagued by illiteracy and ignorance.

Is this incident pure democracy, i.e. direct rule by the people, pure savagery, or the results of Zionism depriving these people of any hope? (vote here)
