It seems to me that the accents on letters sometimes turn into little boxes since the moderators updated the system. Am I right?

I have also noted that the full screen size is not supported if one logs in as a guest. (Users with a log in name have a choice of screen size but this is not the case with guests.)

What gives? Am I mistaken?

You are correct on both counts.

These are in the realm of Greg's responsibility but I can provide some details in the meantime.

With regards to the accents, it can be adjusted from the user's end by altering the Character Encoding in the browser settings. I have encountered inconsistent performance across different browsers. Some browsers need to be set to Western (ISO-8859-1) or (ISO-8859-15) and others need to be set to Unicode (UTF-8) for the characters to appear correctly.

We will have to wait for a global solution to this recent "update" in the software.

With regards to the screen width for guests, this change was indirectly raised before and I do not like it either. Making that change is more technically demanding as it requires altering the layout of the root MLW site. I will draw Greg's attention to it but keep in mind that it is the sort of change that demands a bit more than average time on his part.

I`ve been having a problem with some upper case characters not showing up as they should on forums, not just this one. e.g. " that was the àt sign (sigh, I didn`t do the little àccents ) It`s okay in Outlook Express and Word.

It must be something to do with firefox cos it works okay with I.E. @@@@@@@@@@ at sign, accents... hmmmm

Firefox:

View > Character Encoding > Western

Konqueror:

View > Set Encoding > Manual > Western European (ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-14 or ISO-8859-15)

Galeon:

View > Encoding > Other... > Western (ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15 or Windows-1252)

Safari and Camino:

View > Text Encoding > Western (ISO Latin 1)

Opera:

View > Encoding > Western > choose any one of the sub-types

iCab:

View > Text Encoding > Western European/USA (Windows or ISO-8859-1)

MacIE:

View > Character Set > Western Latin 1 or Western Windows

Macintosh users should not use the IBM-850 nor any Macintosh character sets.

Internet Exploiter:

View > Encoding > Western European (Windows or ISO) > update browser

---

In some of the browsers, setting the character set to variations of the European set, for example the "Central European" or "South-Eastern European" sets, seem to work too.

As Charles mentioned, that was a character encoding error on my part. That has since been fixed. If you continue to encounter errors, please notify me.

That was done on purpose. I wanted to give long time members the choice of using the older templates when I updated the look of the forums. Old habits die hard, particularly when dealing with the look of the forums, and I wanted to keep everyone happy.

I do plan on removing the old template, and replacing it with a full screen version that contains the proper website header (navigation, MLW logo, etc), however, that will take some time to complete, so please be patient.

In the mean time, you have the choice - full screen mode in the old forum templates or the narrower mode in the updated version.
