August1991 Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 You get your political knowledge from a stoned old has-been whose claim to fame is rapidfire pottymouth?George Carlin has had some good lines.I like his description of car drivers. There are two types: maniacs and idiots. The maniacs drive faster than you and the idiots drive slower. Quote
jazzer Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 (edited) You get your political knowledge from a stoned old has-been whose claim to fame is rapidfire pottymouth? Seems Carlin may have hit a nerve Scotty. But he does make a lot of valid points though. Edited October 22, 2007 by jazzer Quote

ScottSA Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Your premise is wrong. It's not the truth. The irony is that Carlin himself lived the American dream. Quote

Precisely....such is a common theme from these self annointed prophets. Carlin, a US Air Force reject, found much success in the very trappings of the pop culture he ridicules for fun and profit. He certainly doesn't leave his Vegas penthouse to mix with the unwashed masses. Carlin has been compared to Lenny Bruce, and while certainly a clever comic and satirist, he never paved the way with skin in the game like Bruce. If it makes him feel better, the famouse Seven Dirty Words have been reduced to three or four, and "tits" is off the list! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

ScottSA Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Yep, attack the messenger. Good work. You must have missed the obvious. When someone claims the American dream is impossible, and yet his very presence is living first person proof that he's lying, it tends to take away from his credibility, don't you think? Quote

Carlin is funny. He is the master of decontructing cliches......but no one shoudl take to seriously what he says, it's meant to be funny, not serious. I don’t have a fear of heights. Shakeyhands Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Carlin, a US Air Force reject... What bearing does this have on anything but to denegrate the man? SwiftBoating are we? Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Agreed, he's great at finding the ironies and contradictions in life and making them funny but his social commentary is pretty much ranting. True....he became a very bitter and unfunny guy later in life, antagonizing audiences with his rants and f-bombs. It's like he forgot that the best comics can make biting social commentary and still be funny at the same time. I remember a much more positive "hippy-dippy" Carlin, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show and Tonight Show (Carson). I still have one of his comedy LPs..."FM & AM" from 1972.
