  1. So, if she wants to be a real smartass, she would take down the sign and hand it over before any damage is done to her door, doing so with very sincere-sounding apologies. Five minutes after the "stormtroopers" leave she can simply put up another..... Do that several times daily and eventually they'll either give up, or arrest her, at which point she can go ahead and sue and be able to retire on the proceeds......
  2. From the link provided by TOPAZ....... I guess Ontarian smoke is more toxic than Canadian smoke. With any half-decent lawyer they should be able to overturn this thing based on the INTENT of the law and also based on........ .....and as such, under FEDERAL law at least, he can claim any part of HIS truck a designated smoking area. Damn straight.
  3. Opposing a person can be seen as being racist. Opposing a policy cannot, unless said policy is something like the abolition of slavery.
  4. Have you received your invitation??? I haven't got mine yet. Kinda bummed about that.... Not sure what to think about the whole case. Obviously, if the guy is indeed innocent as he claims, then he should be free, and should get some sort of compensation. OTOH, if CISA has evidence, could it not be brought forward without jeopardizing the sources of the evidence??? If this sort of thing continues, we may have need for a different kind of justice system to deal with this sort of case, one in which evidence could be presented directly to the judge without any risk of sources being uncovered to the public. Something of that nature......
  5. Well thank you my friend High praise from a fine wordsmith Whose posts provoke thought Away from the Haiku for a minute..... A few years back, if you recall, you and I bumped heads a few times, but there was always a mutual respect. I've always found that in dealing with you, when respect is given, it is returned. You and a few others who I am pleased to see are still here, have always a pleasure to debate with. Regarding Haikus and Limericks; forgive me if I am telling you something of which you are already aware, but just in case you're not, the most common formula for a Haiku is simply this.....Three lines. First line is 5 syllables, second line is seven, third line is five. It's kind of fun trying to fit a message into that format, and I like the idea of a thread full of haiku. It's just something a bit different from the normal MLWeb fare. EDITED again Because I did not proofread Yet another time
  6. Well, my dear American Woman, it seems we must agree to disagree. All your points are well made and logical, as, I believe, are mine. This is one of those issues that can be viewed from various angles, and I don't think there's any real wrong answer on this one. IMHO, as long as they're not butchering the animal in front of these kids, most of whom have likely never witnessed such a spectacle and would probably be horrified, then I don't think it's such a bad thing. You see it otherwise. But according to the article, the kids seemed to be none too upset over it all, and all the activists and press seems to have made a bigger deal of the issue than either the kids or any of their parents. Sorry, I seem to be attempting to further my arguments after agreeing to disagree. My bad.
  7. To address the topic, but not any of the post which have previously been made, I've had flu shots twice in my life. First time I ended up with flu-like symptoms for several days. Missed some work. The second time I got the shot whilst on a leave from work. Still ended up with symptoms for 5 or 6 days. Haven't had a fly shot in about 5 years, and I think I'll likely pass on this one. I think I'm at a lower risk than many people. No kids at home, so no one to drag the infection home from school. I work in a large workplace with many other employees, but there is little or no physical contact. I tend to wash my hands regularly both at work and at home, so that also reduces the risk. My final self-administered defense is large daily doses of vitamin c, which has, since I began taking it several years ago, reduced both the rate and severity of colds, flus etc. I find that the only time I get sick is when I am not able to get enough rest over a prolonged period. As long as I can get a good night sleep 2 out of 3 nights, I'm usually pretty good.
  8. Wolfhounds are great beasts I met one once years ago Scared da shit out' me
  9. Saying hi to dog Can only be made better By scratching dog's head.
  10. That is not haiku You have used a limerick To besmirch my post (But nicely done )
  11. So did the Holy Spirit tell you that it was alright for you to publicly declare this man guilty without him having had the benefit of a trial??? Was it divine intervention that revealed to you and you alone that he was a "diddling piece of human garbage"??? Just curious. I'd like to know where you got this revelation when everyone else seems content to refer to him as "accused" offender, but you seem to think so strongly that he is guilty that you are willing to go on record publicly pronouncing his guilt for all the world to see. I will not enter into a theological debate with you as you clearly hold your beliefs dear and I respect the religious beliefs of others. I would, however, still like some sort of resolution from you regarding why you think you are qualified to pronounce a man's guilt when that guilt has not been proven.
  12. Thanks, friend, but everyone goes through it sooner or later, it just happened to me earlier than some. The rest of your post will be using in a moment..... If every child in the world were like me, we'd all be in big trouble True enough. Also true, however, speaking in context of this thread..... Throughout history kids have watched as their parents killed and butchered animals to feed their families. It was simply the way life was. As True Metis stated, kids also often took part in the killing and butchering. It was a reality of their existence, as necessary to their survival as oxygen. This school program, along with teaching kids about farming, raising livestock, etc, could also be interpreted as life lessons. Sooner or later kid have to learn about death. It could be argued that learning about it this way, with animals that the kids have no heavy emotional attachment to, is kinder than having their first experience with death being due to the loss of a loved one.
  13. So, after reading an entire thread which has swayed this way and that, no one has touched on the job he did onstage......so..... I thought his vocal rendition of the song was quite faithful to the original. He emulated Ringo Starr's performance quite well. Instrumentally, it was well-performed, and again, faithful to the original, right down to the clean, crisp, yet midrangy, guitar sound. Backing vocals were delivered clearly, and all the correct harmony parts were delivered competently. Mr Harper's piano playing caught me by surprise. While this song presents no great challenge for an accomplished pianist, it was still played well. The mild discomfort which came across as the performer approached the piano was almost endearing. A good, solid performance of a classic song. All in all, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. EDITED TO ADD: One thing I love about Canada is the way that many of our politicians are willing to go out on a limb in the public eye. In no other country I can think of would you see high-ranking officials willing to be subject to the piss-takes perpetrated on shows like "Air Farce", "22 Minutes", "Mercer Report" et al. Yes, occasionally we'll see a Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live, but here it seems to happen on a more regular basis, all of the parties are involved at some point or other, and they all seem to be so relaxed about it all. It's good fun, and I think it's a very humanizing element.
  14. Interesting article. Good post. Thanks for that.
  15. Failing a grade can be hard on a kid. I know. Grade 8 was the toughest five years of my life
  16. Nothing worth replying to in the first two statements.....on to the rest..... Not sure what makes this relevant as I don't recall any Lone Ranger stories wherein the Ranger committed a drive by, or ride-by as it were. True, but introducing this only serves to further muddy the waters. True again, but the manufacturers are not the ones who impose regulations which to them are simply something that limit their profit margin. And more's the pity. Common sense parenting, however, may reduce the number of kids getting involved in gangs, thereby reducing the numbers of gang members and the associated casualty rate.
  17. You two have ruined What could have been lots of fun Whole thread in haiku Oleg Bach: There is no real proof That there is no other life In the universe KIMMY: Cartoon characters Can sometimes seem much more real Than folks on this board
  18. When I was 7 years old, the family doctor and local priest came to our door. They had a conversation with my mother which upset my older sister terribly and caused her to run to her room crying. The conversation used big words that a 7-yr old shouldn't be expected to understand. Words like "deceased", "cardiac arrest", and so forth. Near the end of their conversation, my Mom turned to me and asked if I knew what was going on. My reply was simple, "Dad is dead, and he won't be coming home any more". Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. (Interestingly, this is the 2nd post I've responded to today which caused me to say that.)
  19. "Street gangs", was the term I used. They come in a variety of colours, white included. I do my best to avoid all things Elvis. While I do not own a deputy badge, I do possess a few firearms. I've never used them to shoot anyone, though, although the day is young... Gotta love an intelligent debate wherein the participants address the issues with valid points. Indeed. Yeah, and have high-school students enforce it??? Uh-huh. I believe he was attempting to address the situation at the parent level. A grown-up person should be able to recognize common sense without the adornment of "street cred" trappings.
  20. Yes, and can you arrange for me to meet her....please??? It's all about sales, sales, sales. Capitalism is a wonderful thing, but it does have it's downsides. You're right, and in many ways kids are smarter than we give them credit for. But there's a difference between snow-jobbing the kid and actually sitting down and educating them regarding genetics and their influence on our appearance, healthy eating, etc etc. True, which is why I appended the offending rant with.......
  21. You have STILL not addressed what seems to have become the major issue in this thread, that YOU have pronounced this man guilty. Once someone is convicted, I would agree with this. I would say it should go farther, with similar measures for any violent offender.
  22. I hope he washes 'em first. If not, I hope he doesn't wear 'em inside-out. Brings a whole new meaning to the terms "shithead", "dickhead" et al Trying out the little button-thingies in the reply box. Hmm. I guess now I'm right-leaning???
  23. Interesting post. I'm not sure I agree with perpetuating someone's self-destructive habit by supplying him with an addictive narcotic. OTOH, if it's reducing crimes these people are committing on innocent outsiders, it has at least one upside. I would be happier seeing an ongoing treatment program wherein they are given incrementally smaller doses of heroin, perhaps mixed with something else to eventually get them off the heroin altogether. (Sorry, but I don't recall the name of the drug that's often used in treating heroin addicts)
  24. And here we are participating in an interactive form of media, where at least one among us has attempted such crucifixion.
  25. You are drawing a conclusion from a false premise. The fact that I disapprove of one so-called culture does not mean I approve of another. Show me where I said anything about approving of gangs of ANY sort??? Uh-huh. But Elvis did not brag in various publications about how many cops he and his mates killed, or how many bullet wounds he's got, or the drive-by's he perpetrated. He was just a good ol' southern boy who loved to sing. Now, however, kids are being given a message that it's somehow cool to go out with a gun and shoot someone. They're being given that message repeatedly, in word and in song, by icons who proudly sport their scars like medals of honor; scars acquired in gang wars, drive-by's, etc. Granted, any kid with half a brain will know better, but there are always a few..... What to do about it??? Good question. Can't censor the tunes, that's a non-starter. Gotta hope kids start developing better taste in music, and better sense in their lives. Does this mean what he has to say bears any less truth??? Yo, you ain't so fly eitha, dawg, sho 'nuff.
