  1. Only in the bizarro world you inhabit.
  2. I do recall sovereigntists assuming that they would still have preferred access to Canadian markets for dairy /cheese, as they do now. Yeah, right.
  3. I did watch it with two women at the theater on the first day of release, both intelligent and well educated. And opinionated. One hated Thatcher before she saw the movie, thought Streep was great and felt that Thatcher was grossly misrepresented in a heavily unbalanced script. She said it was the first and only time she ever felt a shred of sympathy for the woman. The other knew little of Thatcher specifics, only by reputation and thought the script had large unexplained holes, she also did not understand why her senility was so prominent since the movie was about a major political figure, not a crazy old woman.
  4. Bigotry : That definition applies to many. many posters here part or all of the time, including myself. It is an accurate description at least some of the time and only mildly pejorative IMO.
  5. Now you are falling into the realm of wishful thinking, since Harper just did form a federal govt with no support from a region. So did Chretien. Your premise is that the NDP will form a government with no support from a region. Try again.
  6. Incorrect and illogical. Every patron of science has an agenda, none of them allow the work they fund to simply drift about without direction. The people who pay also retain the right to control the money and assess the value of results, if any, from the research. Are you suggesting that the govt is instructing its scientists to come up with wrong answers?
  7. I am taking the OP warning on freedom of assembly to heart. I was going to meet a friend for lunch at Timmys but I'm afraid I'll be shot on sight. WE won't be able to get the piles of corpses off the streets until after dark, I hope Harpers brownshirts allow us to break curfew long enough to bring in the dead.
  8. Mostly untrue or misleading as well. An Alberta student paying $5914 for a standard undergrad program at Sherbrooke would pay a very similar amount staying home at U of A. A Quebec student attending the U of A pays the same as an Alberta student, around $5900 for a full year undergrad. The cost to taxpayers per student at the U of A is around about $25K per year, so each student (from AB or PQ) gets in the area of a $19K subsidy. The numbers are similar for PQ, though the bursary programs for low income students in PQ are a lot better.
  9. Doesn't exist in our universe, or very very rarely.Unless you are independrently wealthy and accept no donations, 'nonpartisan research ' is an oxymoron. Pretty much all research has a patron.
  10. I don't understand that statement. If the result of an experiment cannot be verified by being observed and duplicated , would that not be conjecture or opinion rather than science?
  11. If they get funding from the govt, then they are not independent. The OP title is delibertaely misleading and motivated by ideology. An independent body would be free to pursue whatever science they wish without constraint. I doubt that such an isntitution exists anywhere in corporate, govt or academia. Somebody somewhere always pays and that payer always has a direction and an agenda that is reflected in funding decisions. So all science has an 'ideological ' base. By far the most common one is capitalism.
  12. That is a pathetic dodge. Try again.
  13. I don't understand the OP connection between equalization and CPP/QPP. Arten't both programs actually pension schemes that are self-sustaining and paid for from contributions by employees and employers? If there is enough sustainable revenue to start paying at 60, 62, 65 or whenever, what does that have to do with equalization?
  14. 1. No, all workers do not pay into EI, not even close. 2. EI is NOT a social program, it is an insurance scheme intended for temporary relief for contributors that are involuntarily unemployed.
  15. If the science body was independent, how could the govt kill it?
  16. The cost of living in the West is higher than Toronto? I don't think so. Importing foreign doctors in not an option unless they are from Western Europe, and those ones already make a good living where they are so there is little incentive to emigrate.
  17. No it is worse than, that, he is completely out of touch with Canada, even the ongoing version of Canada that includes Quebec.Mr Mulcair is making a couple of big assumptions already: 1) that Quebec is a safe and sturdy base from which to take control of the country and 2) his latest ploy of using nasty Alberta the evil empire responsible for the troubles in ON as a wedge issue to divide and conquer Onatrio will work. Politics and comedy: timing is everything, and he is playing his card too strongly and much too early.
  18. Do private sector scientists speak more freely than public sector scientists? Substitute 'employee' for 'scientist' and see if the answer differs.
  19. compressed air doesn't do well in very cold weather unless it has been stripped of all moisture.
  20. True, nobody can cheerlead for the NDP and Liberals on election night with anywhere near the energy we see from the CBC
  21. as far as I know, Canada has never built locomotives anywhere. The govt always left it to the private sector.
  22. It was no secret the Government has been doing a program review, as we would expect from responsible keepers of the public purse.Job cuts are the result. Neither the review or the result are assumptions.
  23. That kid is very very tall for a three year old, and already has a prominent gut. Those do not look at all like lactating breasts to me either. I smell Photoshop.
  24. Don't buy anyhting made by HTC. I had two, both were worthless, poorly made crap. One actually looked great, had many functions and a dazzl;ing HD dipslay. It had only one failing: it could not make or receive telephone calls
  25. Young adults tend to be left leaning, which is due to their inability to distinguish their ass from their elbow. Getting a job and paying taxes cures this condition quickly in most cases.
