The Olympic tournament costs owners revenue because it interrupts the season and risks injury to players. Bettman wants the NHL to get some of the money earned off their backs, it is as simple as that. The NHL fiercely protects their brand, and so does the IOC. If the IOC wants hockey- and they certainly do because it is a winter marquee event- they are going to have to accomodate the NHL by paying.
