It is an odd ad. The first half plays Harpers game, by going after the leader. Dion cannot win that game. If you think Harper sucks, shouldn't you present an alternative to him? It sets up a comparison that never comes, since Dions name is never mentioned and his face never appears in the ad. The Liberals are in trouble.

Dion Misses Filing Deadline Again
fellowtraveller replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Of course, the legisaltion limiting corporate, union and private donations was introduced and passed by Liberal Jean Chretien, not Harper. And the Liberals who objected to the changes made by Harper could simply have voted them down and ended his government. -
Dion Misses Filing Deadline Again

Interesting thought there.... "I won $20 million and have the personal ability to make a difference in the world. I will start by paying off Stephan Dions campaign debt" -
How droll. jdobbin plays rope-a dope. Still, some of it is possible. At the leader level: The Liberals will dump Dion at the earliest seemly moment, which may be 12-18 months before they can find the scratch to run a convention. Harper, win ior lose, has his job for the foreseeable future. Duceppe has been dead and waiting to fall over if they'll just give him the chance, May means nothing except a way to help the Tories win seats. Zero seats for Green. Layton will lose his job to Pat Martin unless he pickes up 10 seats or so. He deserves to get dumped if he cannot pick up many seats, the opportunity is nearly unprecedented.

Normie lives, rightfully, in terror. He'll disappear again after this election. Most useless and overrated waste of paper, perhaps ever. And it had absolutely nothing to do with breaking the country up or keeping it together. It will be rightfully and utterly ignored if and when Quebec ever votes to separate. The last thing Dion wants to do is bring up his lack of accomplishment while he was part of the government.

Dion pledges millions for food safety
fellowtraveller replied to HisSelf's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Gee, too bad Dion did not pledge those millions in 2000 or in the subsequent 6 years, when he was in government and could effect change. If he had, maybe the Maple Leaf horror would not have happened. -

McGuinty Refuses to Endorse Dion

Knows something? Perhaps somebody took Dalton aside and explained the technical aspects of how bread is buttered. -
I think the election of Dion was the exact opposite. He was and is the old guard, the safe candidate. Rae, Ignatieff, Kennedy were all too scary for the Libs to elect. They failed to recognize that an experienced outsider like Rae was exactly what they needed. The last couple of years would hafve been very different if Rae was leader. So, they picked Mr Familiar as everybodys second choice. Problem is, Candians think much the same way: second best, or as recent polls show, third best as a leader. As far as leader survivors go, the only one in question really is Layton. If he fails to increase his seats signifcantly this time, his second glorious opportunity, his days will be numbered. Duceppe will quit at his very earliest opportunity, not because he is going to get smoked in Quebec(which is very likely), but because he has had enough. Dion will want to stay on, but at best he'll be a lame duck. A problem for the Liberals is that the leadership selection process is a year minimum and costs a fortune, two luxuires they don't have. He will quit when he is told to do so, perhaps early 2010. Harper , win or lose, will quit when and if he feels like it.

Nah. Duceppe is already packed and waiting for the moving van, he can't get out of that job fast enough, and it won't matter whatever happens in the election- he is gone.

One of the best, for sure. I hope Mr Dion is in excellent health and spirits and leads the Liberals for a long long time.

Why do we have a Governor General?

Harper nominates Justice Thomas Cromwell
fellowtraveller replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Try complaining to your local Law Society, who are entrusted with policing themselves, then tell me there is no element of self-interest. Virtually everything is done behind close doors, by and for lawyers. Sweet deal for them. It is a myth propagated by several professions, that their work is so arcane or complex that only they can manage themselves. There is absolutely no reason to believe that handing over the SC process to them would be any different. And you have it backwards on the judicial branch. Politicians are elected and make the laws. Judges are appointed and interpret those laws. Our SC forgets that frequentlym, usually encouraged by the govt. The votoing for SC judges should not be done by 'people that don't know enough' , it should be done by our elected representatives in Ottawa. It is their job, or shpould be, to get informed. It is impossibl;e to keep poltics out entirely. What I would like to see is more transparency. -
Harper nominates Justice Thomas Cromwell

The #1 problem with the Supremes is their activism, which was actively encouraged by the Liberals during their reign of mediocrity. The concept of letting the legal community nominate , review, vet, promote and ultimately select candidates is utterly retarded. Given that power, the intensity of grotesque politicking within that community would make a maggot gag. There is no reason to believe the best candiadte would emerge, only the best campaigner. Our system is dominated by lawyers now, enough already. My choice for picking Supremes would be based on the US model. At least then everybody has some idea of the background of the candidate. -
Why do we have a Governor General?
fellowtraveller replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It has also been seriously modified to make it work better, Australia being an example. Here is what really dfoes not work: the Prime Minsisters Office(in a majority govt) rules the land. Whatever the PM wants in terms of legislation - he or she gets. The Opposition has no meaningful role. There are few checks and balances to the power of the PMO. The Commons is emasculated, the Senate never had a pair. And the GG is of course utterly irrelevant. And that is for starters. There is enormous room for imnprovemnent, but we now have a Constitution that effectively hamstrings any substantive change. Thanks Pierre! -
Whatever happened to KarlHeinz Screiber?

It is this kind of 'critical thinking' that makes me despair for the education system in this country. You don't know anything except that somebody is lying. You know that Schreiber is telling the truth, despite his coy reluctance to provide anything of substance and his obvious moitivation for remaining vague. Perhaps you could explain the basis for those two statements. I noticed today in the newspaper that Justice Oliphant is convening the inquiry soon, large ads seeking intervenors. -
Bjork. Why oh why did somebody have to mention Bjork.....? Bjork, the HUman Cabbage Patch Doll. Bjork, the only musician whose name is an exact reproduction of the sound of a cat vomiting. Bjork, who starred in the absolute worst movie ever made - Dancer in the Dark - and yes folks it was a musical. I don't mind the $10 I paid, but I will forever resent the two hours of my life that was irrevocably lost on that pile of steaming dung. I did learn something useful- never, ever attend anything made by the execrable Danish poseur director Lars Von Trier. End of rant.

Why do we have a Governor General?

We have a Governor-General to provide employment for former CBC employees who hit all the affirmative action buttons. It's what you call a 'niche'. -
The CBC has earned the right to provide even more quality entertainment for taxpayers, somehting the private sector cannot be trusted to do. Give them another billion per year, what does it matter?

Hate to disagree...well not really. I caught 10 minutes of Mamma Mia waiting for my movie to start at a cineplex. It was the wedding scene, where poor Pierce had to stand around looking interested while Meryl warbled her way through an ABBA classic. I'll never see the rest for two reasons. I loathe Meryl Streep as an actress, IMO she is incredibly overrated. Second, I loathe ABBA and every bsecond of the overproduced bland pap they inflicted on the world. Other than that, pretty good.

Whatever happened to KarlHeinz Screiber?
fellowtraveller replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Trial? \Trial for what? Nobody has been charged with anything, other than Screiber who has managed to remain in Canada while we wait for his socalled 'evidence' to surface. What I don't understand is that if he actually possesses anything and refuses to prodcue it, why haven't the RCMP seized every scrap of paper he owns? Or could it be that there is f**k all to seize, and Karl has been playing us all like a 2 dollar violin? Wouldn't that thoroughly chap a lot of Liberal asses? -
Whatever happened to KarlHeinz Screiber?
fellowtraveller replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You are sure that Schreiber has evidence because..... he says so Nothing stops the Opposition from rising up and shouting for justice, demanding the investigation begin. Why have we not heard a peep from them for many months? I know this is an inconvenient question and you don't want to answer.... maybe they don't want to acknowledge that Scvhreiber has played them for fools, all of them. -
Whatever happened to KarlHeinz Screiber?

But I thought Schreiber was going to bring down the government? When did he go to jail? Where is the evidence he promised to produce? And.. why isn't the Opposition howling in righteous indignation at these delays, this mockery of justice?
