I don't recall a political situation like this as long as I have been watching Canadian federal politics. The opposition party is poised to make a grand sweep, remenicent of Deifenbaker and Mulroney, only this is not mid campaign but two years out. The situation for the governing party has deteriorated to the point where Liberal MP's are beginning to call for a new leader. Defending our territorial integrity is the most important role for Canada's military and the CPC has promised to build up the CAF to fulfill that role. I am all for it. They also promise to do so with modernizing the Forces. I assume, that means modern equipment in sufficient quantity to perform its role. No arguement from me. The optimum purpose of a viable military is to never have to use it. Where I see a problem, they are also promising to cut taxes. I could use ArmyGuy and Doug to lend their expertise to correct my estimates. Okay, a modern arial combat aircraft costs between $50 million to $90 million each, or almost 2 billion per squadron. A strategic Bomber costs about $650 million each, or $13 billion for a single squadron. Then there is the RCN. $3.5 billion for a single destroyer. A nuclear submarine $3 billion. A Main Battle Tank costs $11 million each, or over $800 million for a single Armoured Battalion. Then you have all the support units, all ranks, plus material support. Add to that, our 2% of GDP or $56 billion worth of combat assets in Europe in support of NATO. Abolishing the CBC would save enough money to buy half a fighter squadron, but the tax cuts will eat into what you can put into the defence budget. I'm not sure what you mean. In 1914, Great Britain declared war on behalf of Canada, New Zealand South Africa and Australia. Had the been no American revolution, that would have included the US, which would also have been a Dominion. This was before the Statute of Westminster. All of the Dominions carried their share of the load. Canada, with a population of 8 million, sent 660 thousand troops to the war with a loss of 66,000 war dead. (Half of the US fatalities with one twelfth of the population.) With the US entering the war in 1914 instead of 1917, the impact would have shortened the war significantly. The American Revolution removed the bulk of American conservatives. Had they remained in America, support for Britain and France would have been much stronger. That being said, the enormous contribution of the US in 1918 made a massive difference. France still carried the largest burden and paid the greatest price. In WW 2, the situation was different. The Dominions were independent and each had the choice to go to war in 1939. I believe, the US would still have had a more conservative leaning in 1939 and would have entered the war soon after Great Britain. American historians really underestimate the impact the loss of 50-100 thousand conservative Americans had on America. I suspect the BNA act would have included the 13 Colonies.

I agree whole heartedly with that, but you will never get that passed. Canadians have refused to pay for anything but a token military. If the CAF cannot function effectively against a major enemy, the budget is a waste of money. We could overcome that with nuclear weapons, but that goes against the Conservative Party policy.

The same argument could be made about the Canadian Armed Forces. It has been generally accepted by most of the correspondents on this forum that if Canada is invaded, there is nothing we can do to stop them. We say it is too expensive. If you like the Canadian Forces, YOU pay for it, but the public shouldn't. Only we know you won't- you think it is a 'must have' right up until you can't force others to pay for it. The CBC provides programming that no private network can afford to. Without the CBC, Canadian produced content would disappear. Rather than erode it further we should be restoring it's funding. We desperately need to do everything we can to preserve and enhance Canadian culture, or pretty soon, it will all slip into the great foreign maw. I've been reading Tories: Fighting For the King in America's First Civil War, by Thomas B. Allen. It got me wondering what would America be like if the Whigs managed to negotiate with the Government in England and avoid war. My thought is the the War of 1812 in America would not have occured, avoiding the American colonies first military defeat. Lord Durham's report would have dealt with lingering issues between London and the Americans and the Statute of Westminster would have recognized the US independence, just as it did for Australia, Canada and New Zealand. At that point, if they so desired, the Americans would have become a republic, complete with the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In other words, the USA would be the same as it is now. They would have avoided the trama of the Civil War and its 800,000 deaths, since slavery would have been effectively abolished 25 years earlier. The upheaval of the American Revolution had no positive impact on how things turned out. Canada, on the other hand, would have been quite different without the flood of American Conservatives fleeing the terrorism levied upon them by the gangs of Sons of Liberty roaming the colonies burning and pillaging.

Why are we so focused on the news part of the CBC. The CBC provides a lot of quality programming that has nothing to do with news. The Nature of Things, Coronation Street, As it Happens, Under the Influence and a lot of quality childrens' programming. The problem is we need a source of programming for a range of demographics, spread out over the second largest country in the world. At the same time, we are bombarded by American content and culture. The CBC has given us Don Messer, Hockey Night in Canada, This Hour Has Seven Days (a progam so good at holding government's feet to the fire that the Liberals forced it off the air) and Front Page Challenge. How many of you were raised on the Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup. The private networks rely more on American programming and very little educational content. As for news, there has been a decline in the CBC News. That is due to cutbacks in funding. The CBC used to have permanent bureaus all over the world. Now it doesn't have the funding. You only have to look at NRK, the Norwegian public broadcaster. They have a reputation for getting an international story first and getting it right. Their documentary on the US election that brought President Trump into office, was the most insightful analysis I've ever heard. It was in depth and without bias. That is what the CBC News should be, but you don't get that for free. If we lose the CBC, you can bet there will be an even greater danger of losing our distinct culture. Attacking our institutions is no way to build a nation.
