CPC Policy Convention 2023

If the government, whether Liberal or CPC, fast tracks construction of housing (Every party wants to do that) they have to be cognaicent of the pitfalls. A few years ago, there was a surge in condo construction in the lower mainland. Soon after, we had the "leaky condo" crisis. the new units were so rushed that people ended up with moldy dumps they couldn't sell and couldn't live in. I keep hearing how people are struggling and I accept that. I just wonder what happened to people's savings accrued in the early months of the pandemic. People had enough extra money to undertake home renovations. A year ago, air travel was jammed with people. So, they must have had a lot of money. Now unless a person never studied history, we all know that plague and war result in inflation. The governments of Harper and Trudeau warned continuously that the super low interest rates would not last and if you are looking at borrowing, be prepared for interest rates to return to normal. The governments even brought in "stress tests" for borrowers to get that message across. Common sense tells us that if we cannot afford a house, don't buy it. We are hypocritical if we demand our governments live within their means when we don't. Today, Canadians owe $107 billion on credit card debt and 500,000 Canadians are unable to pay off their credit card ballance at the end of the month. We should never ask the government to be more fiscally responsible than we are. -
So, I guess God is okay with homosexuality then as well? Since God decided that one out of every nine human beings would be born homosexual and 0.33% of humans are born transgender. But, we are straying from the topic. It has been suggested that membership in the Commonwealth has some kind of influence on whether a nation would have participated in WW 2. Can anyone elaborate on this idea?

What happens to me? I am a retired Peace Officer. The uniform I wore for 25 years was an abomination in the eyes of the Lord, same as homosexuality. I grew up eating pork. My job required me to work on the Sabbath. Next to my service to the community, the sin of homosexuality pales to insignificance. Some people who quote the Bible only observe the passeges that fit into their arguments and ignore anything they find inconvenient. I am one of those people. I believe in the rule that says "love thy neighbour" and "turn the other cheek."

If there had been no revolution, the US would be an independent Consititutional Republic if that is what they desired. The would not necessarily be members of the Commonwealth. That too is a choice each country makes. Robosmith wrote "It is a democratic Republic. Democracy is always part of a Republic, since the representatives are elected democratically." Just to correct something stated earlier, while the US is a constitutional republic, not all republics are democratic. In reality, most republics are not democratic. North Korea, China, Iran and Zimbabwe, for example.

A more important poll would gage the opinion of the people who will be personally impacted and will have to live with the results. -

I would hope the CPC would not be trying to use this issue in a cynical reach for votes at the expense of the well being of the people who will be seriously negatively impacted by this. I can forgive people who supported this resolution out of ignorance, but to knowingly hurt people just to get a few votes is unforgivable. -

I don't recall a political situation like this as long as I have been watching Canadian federal politics. The opposition party is poised to make a grand sweep, remenicent of Deifenbaker and Mulroney, only this is not mid campaign but two years out. The situation for the governing party has deteriorated to the point where Liberal MP's are beginning to call for a new leader. When the crew of the ship asks the captain to relinquish command after it is going down by the bow, it is just a tad late. That being said, it is too soon for Mr. Singh to be measuring curtains at Stornaway. -
The injuries to Jansen, Chapman, Belt, and the recent injury to Bichett have had an impact beyond the control of the coaches. Vladdie has an issue that they need to address. I don't know if it is because opposing pitchers have found his weak spot or if he is having eye problems. He is still spectacular on first base. There is a lot of talent on that team. If they are to replace Martinez, I hope they choose wisely. Pitching is better this year but still lacks the level of consistency expected from a team in contention.

Less how? I find it strange that a great nation, the most generous imperial power in history, sometimes has a lingering anger in some quarters. Most of the world likes the USA. A lot of people would love to be Americans, hence, the line ups at your borders. People pay smugglers 10's of thousands of dollars, their life savings, plus borrowed money, to get in. You must be doing something right.

The only way to deal with a bully is to punch him in the nose with a baseball bat. If an Xi or Putin step over the line, we unleash nuclear hell on them. That certainty worked for Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan. As long as the American President is able to assure the Russians and the Chinese that crossing the line will result in the end of the world, we will continue to survive until the climate burns us all up. “Hey, don’t be so gloomy. In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had murder treachery and intrigue. They produced Michelangelo, DaVinci and the renaissance. In Switzerland they had 500 years of brotherhood and peace. What did they produce? The cookoo clock. “ Orson Wells in the Third Man.

That is the option I would like to see you elaborate. Option one merely delays option 2. We lived through the option 1 scenario in 1936 -1939. Appeasement never works.

CPC Policy Convention 2023
Queenmandy85 replied to Queenmandy85's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Defending our territorial integrity is the most important role for Canada's military and the CPC has promised to build up the CAF to fulfill that role. I am all for it. They also promise to do so with modernizing the Forces. I assume, that means modern equipment in sufficient quantity to perform its role. No arguement from me. The optimum purpose of a viable military is to never have to use it. Where I see a problem, they are also promising to cut taxes. I could use ArmyGuy and Doug to lend their expertise to correct my estimates. Okay, a modern arial combat aircraft costs between $50 million to $90 million each, or almost 2 billion per squadron. A strategic Bomber costs about $650 million each, or $13 billion for a single squadron. Then there is the RCN. $3.5 billion for a single destroyer. A nuclear submarine $3 billion. A Main Battle Tank costs $11 million each, or over $800 million for a single Armoured Battalion. Then you have all the support units, all ranks, plus material support. Add to that, our 2% of GDP or $56 billion worth of combat assets in Europe in support of NATO. Abolishing the CBC would save enough money to buy half a fighter squadron, but the tax cuts will eat into what you can put into the defence budget. The resolution to defend Canada is going to cost a lot of money. We cannot cut enough money from other government spending to make a dent in it. It will also require conscription. Just the NATO commitment will need $20 billion more than what we spend on Defence in total. I cannot see Mr. Poilievre implementing this resolution. Once again, National Defence will end up in the bin. -
I'm not sure what you mean. In 1914, Great Britain declared war on behalf of Canada, New Zealand South Africa and Australia. Had the been no American revolution, that would have included the US, which would also have been a Dominion. This was before the Statute of Westminster. All of the Dominions carried their share of the load. Canada, with a population of 8 million, sent 660 thousand troops to the war with a loss of 66,000 war dead. (Half of the US fatalities with one twelfth of the population.) With the US entering the war in 1914 instead of 1917, the impact would have shortened the war significantly. The American Revolution removed the bulk of American conservatives. Had they remained in America, support for Britain and France would have been much stronger. That being said, the enormous contribution of the US in 1918 made a massive difference. France still carried the largest burden and paid the greatest price. In WW 2, the situation was different. The Dominions were independent and each had the choice to go to war in 1939. I believe, the US would still have had a more conservative leaning in 1939 and would have entered the war soon after Great Britain. American historians really underestimate the impact the loss of 50-100 thousand conservative Americans had on America. I suspect the BNA act would have included the 13 Colonies.

CPC Policy Convention 2023

The CBC resolution was voted down so the CBC is safe for now. Would Mr. Poilievere actually go against the wishes of the Party? I know he said the resolutions are not binding but is this one going to be that important to him? Of course the issues he will face when he assumes office will be very different. -

I agree whole heartedly with that, but you will never get that passed. Canadians have refused to pay for anything but a token military. If the CAF cannot function effectively against a major enemy, the budget is a waste of money. We could overcome that with nuclear weapons, but that goes against the Conservative Party policy. -

The same argument could be made about the Canadian Armed Forces. It has been generally accepted by most of the correspondents on this forum that if Canada is invaded, there is nothing we can do to stop them. We say it is too expensive. If you like the Canadian Forces, YOU pay for it, but the public shouldn't. Only we know you won't- you think it is a 'must have' right up until you can't force others to pay for it. The CBC provides programming that no private network can afford to. Without the CBC, Canadian produced content would disappear. Rather than erode it further we should be restoring it's funding. We desperately need to do everything we can to preserve and enhance Canadian culture, or pretty soon, it will all slip into the great foreign maw. Where else can you find programs like the Nature of Things or Quirk and Quarks. Oh wait, yes, there is Nova. Original programming from...wait for it...the American public broadcaster. -
Satanic Clubs making inroads in Children's Schools
Queenmandy85 replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Religion & Politics
When I was in high school in the early 1960's, I wanted to become a warlock and found a coven of witches as a school club. Unfortunately, I ran into an obstacle. No girls wanted to join. If anybody tells you girls are not smarter than boys...?. I sometimes wonder if many of you were ever kids or at least teenagers. Some of you talk about schools "indoctrinating" children and promoting this or that. Kids hardly ever listen to their parents and they certainly never listen to their teachers. If kids want a Satanic club, they will have one. They won't care what any adults tell them. -

If the CPC government actually puts the anti- transgender policies into law, it will be challenged in the courts. In my ignorance, I have no idea if it is charter compliant. It should make an interesting case. No matter how it turns out, Mr. Poilievre will be able to tell the base he tried. I'm not sure how the electorate will view it.
