  1. I'm more worried about the power and influence of China, Russia, and the United States.
  2. Betsy, you seem obsessed with sex. Morality has nothing to do with statecraft.
  3. All this garbage about affairs and adultery is a reflection of the negative impact of Romance Novels. Marriage is a union between a man and a woman's property or family connections and vice versa.
  4. "...the impeachment of a President!" The President was acquitted. A scandal is the Minister of Land and Forests or the Minister of Customs and Excise taking bribes. It is not a politician having extra-maritial affairs. As Henry Kissinger said," Power is the greatest aphrodisiac of all."
  5. Betsy, you still have not explained why the Lewinsky case was a scandal. It is rare to find a person who does not have a bit on the side. Other than the prudes and hypocrites trying unsuccessfully to impeach the President, how did that affect his ability to carry out his duties. Eisenhower had a mistress, FDR died in the arms of his mistress, Lincoln had his army Lieutenant, and Kennedy had his girlfriends. Perhaps it would be more of a scandal if a President did not have a girlfriend or boy-toy in the cases of Lincoln and HC.
  6. I do not understand why the Lewinsky affair constitutes a scandal. The only Presidents in the 20th century who did not have a mistress were probably Nixon and Reagan.
  7. History is not always an accurate predictor of coming events but it can give us some indications. A rapid growth of European nationalist parties could topple current governments and introduce an ethnic cleansing to remove people of african, middle eastern and asian descent from Europe. Those who do not leave could see a replay of the 'final solution.' OTOH, usually, the newcomers successfully overwhelm the local inhabitants. OTOH part two, maybe it will all come about peacefully. The only thing I know for certain, is I cannot predict the future and, I suspect, neither can anyone else...except by accident. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
  8. A better idea is to use the system set down in the BNA Act. Remove the Prime Minister and politicians from any input.
  9. Argus wrote: "I'm unaware of any conservative beliefs McKay possesses, like smaller government, for example, less intrusive government, a believe in individual self-reliance wherever possible, as well as individual responsibility, a stronger military, law and order, paying down the debt. etc." I don't see how you can have a stronger military and still have a smaller government, less intrusive government, and pay down the debt. A strong military requires a massive increase in taxes, conscription and government control (not ownership) of industry. I would like a strong military but Canadians do not agree. They do not want to make the sacrifice.
  10. BC, I think that is what I was saying. Canada doesn't want to be part of the U.S. and the U.S. has no interest in acquiring Canada. Our relationship has worked well for both of us. You just articulated it better than me.
  11. I think the NDP will make the mistake of removing him. While his position on the deficit was probably empty campaign rhetoric, his stance on the niqab was proper.
  12. Canadians don't want to join the U.S. and an invasion would be very costly to the U.S. in the world reaction. As demonstrated in Afganistan and Iraq, it takes more than an invasion to take over a country and Canadian resistance would make ISIL and the Taliban look like pussies. We have access to their home turf. We have access to very nasty things to make them pay. Americans are not stupid. They are good people, but not stupid.
  13. Canadians have refused to provide the revenue necessary to maintain the nation over the last several decades. It costs money to maintain a modern nation. Thus, we have no means to defend the country, our transportation system is crumbling, and we are facing the necessity of converting energy production from fossil fuels to non-carbon based sources, ie. nuclear and solar.
  14. I am compelled to pay for my shares in Teck. I see no difference between that and paying my dues in CUPE. My vote in my Local's meetings carries more weight than my vote at Teck's stock holders meetings.
  15. The reason the private sector doesn't get the same opportunities as Public sector is because union membership has declined in the private sector. A union is a corporation that sells labour on behalf of it's share holders, the membership. It has a duty, like any other corporation, to make as much money and win as many benefits as it can on behalf of its shareholders. An attack on unions is an attack on free enterprise.
  16. I agree and Islam is incidental to ISIS desire for power in the Levant.
  17. The problem is not so much spending but a lack of revenue. Like the fellow said, "Everyone wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to die to get there." Taxes have been cut year after year and as a result everything has been allowed to slid into disrepair. Operating a modern government requires a certain amount of money. If citizens don't pay enough taxes, governments have to borrow. If you don't want deficit spending, pay more taxes. People will line up to buy 649 tickets, buy liquor, but they whine like dentist drills when you ask them to pay for the services they demand from their government.
  18. Why is it bad news that Assad is doing the pushing? He is probably the only one who can restore order to Syria. If he goes, Syria will become another failed state like Libya.
  19. For starters, 3700 people killed in bombings and shootings in the United Kingdom, by Roman Catholic terrorists.
  20. Better get yourself a sword and never let it out of you hand. Of course you will have an interesting time explaining to airport security that it is your religious right to get into Valhalla. When that day comes, I'll see you there and we can share tales or power and glory over a few pots of ale.
  21. Slick, you left out the Christian terrorists in the UK. They are in a bit of a lull for the moment, but they will be back. They killed more people than the 9/11 attacks.
  22. We could eliminate the terrorists in Syria. Support Assad and Russia and go whole hog in carpet bombing all of the rebel areas in Syria and Iraq and put 2 million troops on the ground with a large permanent occupation force. Establish a colonial government and allow the Bathists to maintain law and order under the colonial office. But that, like the dream of rebuilding the Canadian Forces, won't wash. People say they want a solution, but they don't want it enough to make the very serious sacrifices required. We do not want to make the same mistakes as the Bush / Blair action made. This is not something you want to do on the cheap or the short term. Our so-called allies have a consistent knack of choosing the wrong sides. They supported the Nationalist Chinese against Mao, Batista against Castro, Diem against Ho, and any number of goofs against Saddam. The only exception to this run of stupidity was the Marshall Plan, and support for the USSR against Hitler. The Americans should be getting closer to Russia, not picking fights. Putin is a democratically elected president. Why make an enemy out of him?
  23. While there may be evidence of God, it is indirect. We see effects and we attribute them to God. There is evidence that the sun goes around the earth. We see it every day. (James Burke: The Day The Universe Changed) If you watch the sun rise and set, there is no way to tell if the sun revolves around the earth or the earth revolves around the sun. Evidence of God's work is not proof She exists. We do not have enough information, therefore each of us will examine the evidence and come to our own conclusions. Belief in God(s) is possibly hard wired into our brain. It may be an evolutionary advantage that allows us to overcome the personal survival instinct to behave in a manner that puts the welfare of the many ahead of the few, to paraphrase Mr. Spock.
  24. This is hardly earth-shattering. You cannot look at the complexity of a living cell or the elegance of the cosmos without seeing the power and the glory.
