  1. Why are the Republicans so welded to a candidate that does not have the confidence of a large segment of American society? Judges must not only be impartial, but must also be percieved as impartial. Judge Kavanaugh's statement regarding the Clintons and the Democrats should disqualify him just as if a candidate made the same statements against the Trumps and the Republicans. The hatred embeded in American politics mystifies me. Democracy only thrives if we don't take it too seriously. We need politicians who can debate with each other but still enjoy friendship with each other. We need to rely on Judges who make objective decisions.
  2. In a comparison between the US and Iran, one consideration is that Iran has not invaded another country in 282 years. The US was not even a country at that time. How many countries has the US invaded in that time? OTOH, given a choice of living in Iran or the US, I would choose the US in less than 1billionth of a heartbeat. Maybe I could even get Bush-Cheney to show me around. ;-)
  3. So you would rather have direct rule. It would likely entail a greater cost with all the travel back and forth between Ottawa and London.
  4. So where does this 13% come from?
  5. That is because they are right and you are wrong. Government ownership of a business might be socialist, but that is not fascism.
  6. You do not understand what Fascism is.
  7. That's an incredible stretch. You cheapen the impact of the word. It is tantamount to calling President Trump a nazi. It diminishes the struggle against real fascists, communists and nazis. Is the TVA fascist?
  8. Back to the original post, Eric Grenier's Poll Tracker shows that if an election were held on Sept. 18th, the Liberals would take 187 seats to the CPC's 125. Bernier's party doesn't even register.
  9. It is shocking to read so many comments that denigrate women's rights. Can you honestly say the persuit of equal rights for women is wrong? The same goes for the environment. What kind of an idiot would oppose the protection of the environment?
  10. You say that like there is any other jusridiction where you don't pay taxes. Do you expect to get all government services for free?
  11. Time is our friend. That is why the US is trying to rush it.
  12. It is important to never walk away. We need to keep negociating for as long as it takes or for President Trump to try and remove Canada from NAFTA. That likely could not take place until next year and the US administration would likely meet with domestic opposition. The US objective has always been to kill NAFTA. It didn't matter who was negociating on Canada's behalf. Supply management did not become an issue until it appeared an agreement was near, then the US moved the goal posts. The US wishes to crush Canada just as they recently did to Mexico. If we give in on supply management, then they will go after Canada's auto sector. Never give in and never give up. Stretch it out for another six years if neccessary. If we can delay the signing between the US and Mexico until after the new government in Mexico takes office, they may not be so eager to sign.
  13. We can't blame President Trump. Secretary Clinton also promised to re-negociate / cancel NAFTA. This was the most important issue for many working class voters who never experienced the recovery that came in 2009. Trump won the election because voters believed he was listening to them. If NAFTA fails, it is the will of the American people. As Menken said, Democracy is the philosophy that people should get the government they want...good and hard.
  14. The US is demanding extraordinary concessions such as the end of the independent dispute settling protocal, which would allow the US to cheat with impunity. Ending supply management on dairy would allow the US to flood Canada with dairy products destroying Canada's dairy industry. As soon as we no longer have a domestic dairy industry, the US could jack up prices many-fold. What concessions of the same magnitude is the US prepared to make?
  15. They have been clear that dispute resolution and supply management are the stumbling blocks. All parties agree on Canada's position in these issues. Whether the negociations are resolved or not, trade will flow.
  16. Geography is the engine of economics. It determines where industry grows and where trade flows. When Governments try to override the dictates of geography, it tends to impeed industry and trade. Much of NAFTA was designed to take advantage of geography. Much of our trade with the US occurs because the geographical circumstance makes it more efficient than trade over seas. The same applies to US trade with Canada and Mexico.
  17. No, I am a decendend from Norman English, Anglo-Saxons, Irish and Scottish. If you don't want to pay taxes, how will you have healthcare? The left of centre segment of the population is the majority, especially if you include my fellow Red Tories. So who is this minority. Social "conservatives?" Perhaps the Reform Party? I can tell you for certain radical Monarchists are definitely a minority and the Government definitely doesn't to us. Go figure. I am skeptical of Kenwick man. Ever hear of Piltdown Man? I'm not saying it is a hoax, just that I know nothing of it. I would have thought it would have been featured on Quirks and Quarks.
  18. Just who is this radical minority, and how have they ruined your life? Don't say taxes because our taxes are pretty low compared to others. If you don't like taxes, on't get sick. :-)
  19. Then you are a leftist liberal socialist. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) It is not my "idea of conservatism," it the doctrine of Harley, Pitt, Randolph and Sir Winston Churchill, MacDonald and Borden. Your idea of small Government and low taxes will not work in the 21st Century. Most of the first world 'democratic' nations are Constitutional Monarchies. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Japan, Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Canada to name a few. I know at least a half dozen judges. My neighbour, a former neighbour, and a number I got to know when I was appearing in Court. They are all non-partisan and to my experience, impartial in their application of the law. The only one who's political affilliation I know is my neighbour who was active in the Conservative Party before he "ceased to be a citizen." (His words, since he was no longer eligible to vote.) Your views on the Charter could potentially change if you are unfortunate enough to need to avail yourself of it's provisions. Your nostalgia for a WASP nation ignores the fact that Europeans have only been here for a brief time. We have been here for 410 years, 200 years in dominance. First nations have been here for over 50 centuries. 50 centuries vs 4.
  20. Apparently, this Judge was not recommended by McGinty and, while Ford was elected as an MPP, he was appointed Premier.
  21. One of the prerogatives of the Crown is that she may ask for, and receive advice from anyone. In this particular case, it would seem she is following the advice of her First Minister, whom she appointed. My only concern with his advice is it will disrupt many people who have spent time and money preparing for an election under the old rules, only to have the rules change a few weeks into the election. This disruption punishes good citizens who have applied to give service to their community. I will discourage others from entering public service in future.
  22. That is liberal / republican propaganda. We are a Constitutional Monarchy, not a democracy. The ultimate authority under the Constitution resides in the Crown who receives advice from her ministers and acts with that advice in mind. Loyalty to the Crown is the primary doctrine of conservatism. The election of Judges takes away from the prerogatives of the Crown and is a step towards socialist republicanism. It would politicize the judiciary. Taxme, your statement quoted above tells me two things: you ate not a conservative and you don't know any judges.
  23. Ford forgets that Judges are appointed by the Crown as was he. He was elected as an MPP, but he was appointed Premier by the Crown. He is either ignorant or a hypocrite.
  24. Losing a vote means the Ministry has lost the confidence of the House. The Government must resign and the Crown must then determine if another Member can form a government that will have the confidence of the House, or if the writ must be dropped.
