  1. But nothing you wrote supports that proposition. You could have written "maybe our real cosmos is made of cheese" and it would have as much bearing on the information you've presented. Many fields of study are focused on the past rather than the present. By assimilating the information we have about the past, we can figure out how things happened. -k
  2. Ok, so what do you propose we do? Until somebody invents a time machine, I don't see what can be done to change the mistakes of the past. As for the present, how do you propose we continue to exist as a nation without our resource industries? How do you propose we afford to meet our commitments if we don't have a viable economy? How do we provide the clean water that the reserves need? How do we support the refugees coming to Canada seeking a new life? -k
  3. That's fine for the Leafs, but HOW ABOUT THOSE OILERS!! -K

I have considered issuing a fatwah against brunettes, but am not yet ready for militant action.

  5. And that's why everybody should go back to where their ancestors came from, and leave Canada to the aboriginals and the Muslim refugees. -k
  6. Lindsey Graham is so far behind the leaders in the Republican race that he would need the Hubble Telescope to see them. He's a complete non-factor. But he had a couple of memorable blasts about Trump this week: On Trump's plans for dealing with ISIS: On why Donald Trump is leading this race: Those are probably the words of a guy who has realized he has no shot at winning, and has run out of patience with the dumb-guy wing of the party. -k
  7. The Oilers have 5 straight wins since the loss to the Leafs, and have beaten teams like the Stars, Rangers, Bruins, and Penguins. They have played themselves back into basically a tie with everybody who isn't the Kings in the Pacific Division. And this is with McDavid, Yakupov, and Pouliot all out of the lineup with injuries. Taylor Hall is completely freaking out right now and Leon Draisaitl has come out of the AHL and put up 26 points in 20 NHL games this year. He has the makings of becoming a monster center. -k
  8. The whole idea is nonsensical. I mean, what are you going to do? Tattoo a yellow six-pointed star on somebody's forearm so you can identify their religion? What if somebody decides to convert to Islam? Should they just go deport themselves? If somebody decides to leave Islam, can they get themselves removed from the tracking database by going to a DMV center and eating a bacon double cheeseburger in front of witnesses? If somebody wants to enter America but you're not sure if they're a Muslim, how are you going to test them? If somebody wanted to enter America for bad-guy reasons, would you expect them to be truthful about their religious beliefs? The whole idea is nonsensical and is just something Trump came up to appeal to the dumb-guys and racists who are driving his campaign success. -k
  9. If the Leafs improve-- and with a hockey man like Mike Babcock running the show I think it is inevitable that they will-- I think the fans will invent their own stars. Somebody will be seen as the leader or the guy driving the on-ice success, and he'll be a star. If Toronto was able to turn a scumbag like Darcy Tucker into a hockey hero, they can make anybody into a hockey hero. -k
  10. I can't believe they're still trying to make Nick Kypreos happen. He's awful. I don't get it. Is it because he used to get his face punched a lot as a Leafs enforcer that they think people like him? -k
  11. Cite? Given Robert Dear's statements at his arraignment, how can you possibly claim that his motive is unclear or pretend there's any doubt as to whether this was an act of terrorism? If you're trying to argue that Robert Dear's rampage wasn't an act of terrorism because it doesn't match the description you just provided, then you're the one trying to play semantics. -k
  12. I still think you guys are missing the point in bickering over the specifics of the actual texts. It's not the words in the texts that are the problem, it's the mindset of adherents. Most first-world Jews are modern and tolerant people... but there are still Hasidic dumb-asses in New York City who harass women and non-Jews. Most first-world Christians are modern and tolerant people... but you still have hate-filled lunatics like Kevin Swanson or Scott Lively using the Bible to justify their views. And I believe that Muslims who grow up in the first world would follow that trend as well, provided that negative influences are removed. Those negative influences include things like Jihadist propaganda and dumb-ass Imams from Saudi Arabia preaching garbage, but it also includes things like exclusion and alienation. -k
  13. I agree with that much, but they were this bad last year as well, so I can't see that being a rationale for a year-over-year drop. -k
  14. If there were any lingering doubts about Robert Dear's movitves... Sorry, Fox, not a bank-robbery gone bad. Sorry, Ted Cruz, not a transgendered leftist. -k
  15. I will wager you valuable Kimmy Points that as the Leafs on-ice product improves, their ratings will also improve. Leafs fans endured another very poor start to the season and I can't blame them for not tuning in, but it appears that Babcock has them moving in the right direction lately. -k
  16. I think the Republicans are now screwed for the 2016 presidential election. If Trump wins the nomination, he's just too loose-cannon to win the general election. If he doesn't win the nomination, he'll run as an independant and take enough supporters with him to hand a victory to the Democratic candidate. -k
  17. So I hear that the Republicans and the NRA are opposed to a ban on using the "no-fly list" in firearms background checks because they're worried that it would result in unfair discrimination against people who are on the "no-fly list" by mistake. This would be the first case in recorded history where Republicans are concerned about discrimination against people on the "no-fly list". -k
  18. I seriously have no idea what you're getting at in referencing that. Are you arguing that if that movie were made in 2015 the traditionalist father would be the "good guy" and their children seeking to abandon ethnic traditions and adopt modern English culture would be the "bad guys"? -k
  19. No, I'm on point. The women and children in the refugee camps are in high danger of sexual violence. Gay men in those camps are in no more danger than straight men, up until the point where people find out they're gay. I have no idea what you're getting at regarding 1942, unless you're suggesting that the men in those camps should get in tanks and go make the world a better place. Perhaps they should, but clearly they've decided not to, and have chosen instead to swarm into Europe looking for an easier life. -k
  20. Of course, the idea of background checks and screening for mental health kind of falls on its face when most states have very low standards for private sales of firearms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_show_loophole I assure you, Bonam, it's not mental health advocates that are lobbying against tighter standards for private sales of firearms. -k
  21. I don't recall anybody claiming that preventing mentally ill people from getting firearms is unfair. What I DO recall is attempts to blame "Big Pharma!" for mass shootings (ie, referring to antidepressants as "MASS MURDER SUICIDE PILLS!" and so on). Or as in this recent thread: http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums/topic/25117-mentally-ill-patients-not-guns-are-shooting-culprit/ ...in which some members, apparently following the lead of US right-wing media figures like Ann Coulter, attempted to disconnect gun ownership from the issue entirely and ask instead: "why aren't we locking up more mentally ill people?" I certainly support probing the applicant's mental health history as part of the firearms licensing process. When I got my Restricted license, the Firearms Officer required information about my mental health from my doctor. I support that level of scrutiny. But the idea that maybe the real answer is to start institutionalizing more people? -k
  22. I believe rules were toughened after the Shrub Administration, and in response to Canadian, rather than American, issues. I believe that the administrators enacted this rule because they got tired of former member Dobbins hitting the "report" button every time I referred to Stephane Dion as "Moon Unit". -k
  23. I bought Win 8 when it came out, and spent an additional $5 to buy 3rd party software to customize it, and I found it was hands down the best OS I have run on any of my computers. XP was buggy like a Mexican bordello... Vista and 7 better... but Wiindows 8 ran flawlessly. I'm hoping for more of the same from Windows 10. -k
  24. Petty drivel like calling Mr Trudeau "Justine" has no place in a debate. It wouldn't be allowed in a real debate and we're not missing out on anything by not allowing it here. Childish antics like that would get you a penalty in a real debate. As for who defines limits and how they're defined... I think the answers to those questions are rather obvious. -k
  25. This is the only "comic book" show I'm currently watching. And calling it that is really inaccurate, because it's definitely not a comic book show. There's no overt connection to the "Marvel" brand, other than their name on the marquee and that this is apparently based on a little-known series they published some time ago. There's no costumes, no super-punchouts. With a few minor tweaks all the sci-fi elements could easily be removed and this could be a detective story about a psychologically broken woman trying to recover her life. She has surreptitiously used her super-strength a few times, but it's mostly to emphasize to the viewer that she used to be something more. Some time ago in the movies thread, we were talking about how the superhero movies never talk about what happens afterward. They level half of New York or Metropolis or Nova City trying to stop the bad-guys, they win the day, and nobody ever thinks about what happens to all the people who've been left homeless or jobless or maimed or killed in all the destruction. In Jessica Jones we get the opposite... when we meet her the "bad guy" is already gone and Jessica is dealing with the aftermath... she's still living in terror. I have followed many of the Marvel movies and TV programs, and perhaps their name on the marquee made me more inclined to give this a chance. But for the most part it was word-of-mouth and buzz on sites like RottenTomatoes that got me interested. -k
