  1. Quite the opposite. This is really energizing to that small-c conservative base. The people that formed the core of the Reform Party are the only ones not that happy with Harper, because he's turned out to be far more to the left than what they signed on for. To see that someone who might be a contender for the leadership some day espousing stronger conservative principles than we're currently seeing gives them MORE confidence in the future of the Conservative movement. You'd think so, but Bernier has actively been going door to door in Alberta with CPC candidates. They really like what he has to say specifically because he's NOT a typical Quebec politician. Far too many eastern Conservatives are really just Liberals wearing blue suits. Bernier a real conservative who just happens to be from the east. That's very refreshing. At bare minimum, he's got them listening to see what else he'll say or do. It's very similar, and that's what's so appealing about it.
  2. Just another in a long list of reasons to dump the charter.
  3. The problem is, when it comes to public health, you can't trust "proven" either. There are charlatans on both sides, and the incentives are greater on the "evidence based" side because the money involved is so much greater. Things end up being "proven" with fake research to secure the patent rights, while unpatentable natural remedies won't even get researched because there's no profit motive.
  4. It's making the distinction between a party member and the public at large, not between those who do and do not abide by the law.
  5. So far they have been.
  6. The systems are based on the same principles, the expectations of the electorate are vastly different.
  7. This just in: Canada is not the UK.
  8. There are also still some far east Russian aboriginal tribes that not only look a lot like our north american natives, but they also have remarkably similar traditions, clothing, dance, etc. http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2010/02/15/russian-indians/
  9. The fool is anyone who believes that the long form contains information that is required to set public policy. Thankfully, the government is smarter than you are.
  10. What vital government policy is being formed on the basis of the 21,000 Canadians who claim to be Jedi Knights?
  11. Kanetix is the site that I quoted to you first, the one that came back with significantly higher rates than what I'm paying here for all three of my cars. You told me they were unreliable, but now they're all you've got? Do have another site I can try? I'm more than willing to concede your point, if you ever actually get around to making one.
  12. It would be an extraordinary situation for any party to get a majority under the current circumstances. At least one party would have to have a total collapse. One thing that could bring about such a collapse would be if the voters believe that the opposition parties might form a post-election coalition. Harper's polling numbers jumped almost 20% when the threat of a coalition was raised last time. Ignatieff said things like "a coalition if necessary" enough times, that the campaign ads will be pretty easy to make.
  13. I've yet to see any argument that even comes close to showing the great advantage society gets from knowing most of the info that is on the long form. What vital role were the 21,000 Canadians who claimed to be Jedi Knights fulfilling?
  14. Of course it is.
  15. Kimmy's right though. The vast majority of socially conservative groups are banned specifically because they are a socially conservative group. Even the so-called "specific actions" are usually the result of deliberate baiting by left-wing activist groups, such as joining the conservative group, being nothing but disruptive, then filing a complaint when they are asked to leave.
  16. I've yet to see a case where private insurance in Canada or the US can compete with the coverage and price we get. I've seen many people make the claim, but when I actually check what my cars would cost with their providers, it costs a lot more. Post some links if you've got better providers, I'd really like to see them.
  17. I'm not so sure. When I put my info into this site: https://www.kanetix.ca The quotes it gives me are all several hundred dollars more than what I'm paying with MPI.
  18. The court ordered paralysis is interesting. I've always thought that we should look at some eye-for-eye punishments too. It would probably save money over incarceration.
  19. Move to Manitoba. Our car insurance rates do go down regularly, especially if you're a long time accident/ticket-free driver. We even get rebates if the insurance company's profits go over a certain level. When we do get increases, they are usually very small.
  20. You're insane. Harper is one of the most socialist Prime Ministers this country was ever known.
  21. They're the ones stirring the false panics. Not reputable.
  22. There were a couple at my son's elementary school.
  23. The answer may well be in the question, but if past patterns of action are any indication, it probably has more to do with free plane rides into the city than how serious anything was.
  24. The lesson that H1N1 should have taught people is to stop listening when government agencies tell you the sky is falling. H1N1, Avian Flu, West Nile, SARS, Listeriosis, and on and on. We keep jumping from panic to panic over things that never turn out to be anywhere near as bad as the hype. In the mean time real damage is done to people in the form of needlessly adding stress to their lives.
  25. Especially in this case. It's long overdue.
