Toronto deficit is historical Miller not hysterical Ford
Shwa replied to a topic in Local Politics in Canada
Good article on the actuals and what we are actually talking about. And seriously, former Mayor Miller must be chuckling. From $350 million surplus to $774 million deficit in one Ford year? Enjoy the chuckle... -
True. Smallc did do that, which is funny in a way. But the point still stands and it is widely accepted that immigration has been and still is, beneficial to the Canadian economy.

After what they did in Mars Attacks! no, we should keep them out because they always come proclaiming peace and then destroy our buildings and governments with their deathly rays... -
Nope, you're wrong. Corn, for example: Major Crops Grown in the United States So corn is used to feed people. How about sugarcane? This compares to some 19 million acres of sugarcane in Brazil. Less than half of one country's production.

"European majority status???" LOFL! More wanna-be Eurocentricity. Have some pride man. The fact is that the only culural "majority status" in the US is "American" culture and if you believe otherwise then you might want to get a refund on your shoddy education. Maybe eat some apple pie and attend a baseball game to clear the cobwebs. Oh. Wait. When you say "European majority status" you are really referring to "caucasian majority status" aren't you?

I completely misread you then and I agree with where you are coming from. -

I wonder if Dash Domi could get the City a deal and save some money on the IT budget. I am sure Jacobek and Ford are fast friends. Jacobek could be the intermediary... -

Why? Would we better off without hard, biting and unrelentless criticism of our own culture? In other words, why should we display any temperance towards our own culture at all? Because some people are oversensitive and mistake rational criticism as some bizarre admittance of weakness, inferiority or self-hatred? Pffff... The people taken most seriously are those than can provide rational criticism and that criticism is usually input into cultural or societal change. If you don't believe me, read some any history books. -

There are three problems with your argument. Skin colour has nothing to do with culture. And cultures change over time. America's culture is predominantly American which has influences from various sources. (eg. Are you saying Jazz is a predominantly European musical form? How about the cotton gin - is that a predominantly European invention? etc.) Non-sequitur red herring. "Chinese founded Canada" is a fantasy and has no bearing on anything unless you are one of those alter-history types. -

Let's review, shall we? So I did supply "something" showing a surplus in October 2010. Well, November 2010, so you get the gist. Was it supposed to? And what was his platform? To use the budget surpluses to cover off the deficit? Well, he has done that already hasn't he? So what's next now that he has used that one all up? What else was in his platform? Let's see this beaut of a quote: Rob Ford’s election platform vision That sounds exactly like what David Miller was doing already. LOFL! What else do you have to say Mr. Ford? So reduce the things that bring in supluses, then complain that austerity is needed, slash service to the bones and then - and then - when it simply doesn't work out... With Rob Ford, freezing property taxes is job one “ Oh-oh... Look out 2012... -

Ford expected to plow surplus into 2011 budget Oh, but wait. This story is from December, 2010. What's this talk of surplus? What was that Mayor Ford? What did you say? Ford makes layoffs sound like a certainty So, hmmmmm, let's get this straight.... In the start of the new year, the Mayor plans to use this mysterious "surplus" to balance the budget; like Miller had before him. Yet, six months later, the Mayor says they have "saved" over $70 million. Why, without any service cuts or massive layoffs, all the while kissing the car tax good-bye, how did he actually "save" over $70 million" dollars. The guy is a pure genius because it appears that he and his Nation have made things appear out of thin air. No, not genius, it's... it's... magic! Whoops, I almost forgot: Toronto posts $275M surplus Now this story is not from October, but from November, but I am hoping proximity will do. -
When private profit margins are low in a recession or depression, cut the public service. That is the golden mean, the virtue, the rallying cry to rationality. All will be well when public services are reduced to barebones, then the private corporations - that pay all the taxes - will be restored to their rightful place in the grand scheme of things. Paradise will soon follow...

Which "culture" is at risk from being "innudated with foreign influence and being wiped out?" Did you actually write "we do?" LOFL! Hyperbole much? -

Better yet, who will make this soup? Surely not from a can if the "industry" sector has collapsed. Good bye Campbells, your tomato soup was awesome. At least we will not have shortfall of people to serve the soup. Hey, who will make the spoons and bowls and refrigerators and stoves and building materials? And the shoes that people will use when they walk into the soup kitchen? -

Ford makes layoffs sound like a certainty Here is more of the Mayor Ford Promise: Yep, going from $70 million to $700 million should be a snap. I mean, if saying it is that easy, surely doing it must be just as easy. -
As I said earlier, referring to to Jame's article in the Star, this line is hilarious: Maybe he takes the summers off and, at the rate he is moving, will likely make that a policy for the City too.

Terrorism Charges infringe on Charter Rights

Agreed. "Holocaust" simply doesn't apply here, when discussing the effect of Canadian government policies on Aboriginals and the scale of that effect. Are more apt term is "ethnic cleansing." -
A good point and an oversight on my part. I get news from the radio as well. Cosnider it 'other'

City can cut 2,000 child care spots, merge fire and EMS to save money: report What's 2000 subsidized daycare spaces when there are 19000 on the waiting list? That should get them a couple hundred grand. Merging fire and EMS, another couple of million... The only way I see it is a tax hike. That'll go over well... Ouch. We're the most expensive city in Canada

Kindness towards others does not rest solely in the domain of socialism. I mean 'social" in the sense of "others." No man is an island entire of itself...

No, it wasn't given in an attempt to refute the specific. Just that there is information out there about the method. -
It shouldn't be a rule, but a plain social responsibility.

But you still care about firefighters right?

No one is "blaming the woes on repealing a tax on car owners" just that there is not that revenue available and now, thus far, any efficiences gained by the $300k consultant process won't meet even that shortfall. Nevermind 100's of millions... So are you saying that David Miller's spending habits - on core municipal services - is the place to start laying blame? No doubt Miller is having a good chuckle right now.
