  1. Has anyone every asserted that "climate change" has not or ever been with us? The other implication is that after the climate recovered, the region didn't, which might explain why the people abandoned their works at Gobekli Tepe.
  2. .No one is forcing you to drink alcohol. Save money and don't drink. 60% is now considered a "vast majority?" I didn't get that memo. Not bad eh? Lining the pockets of the provincial government so they can, you know, keep hospitals running, build and maintain roads, educate children... Actually Quebec sells beer, wine and cider in their corner stores and other than the transfer payments, it is working out fine for them. If you get the right Mac's you could probably even buy pot. You saw this part of your quote right? "...said the poll is unlikely to sway politicians or the public." I think the author was serious about that.
  3. Ford ally, Stintz, won't support library closures Which is a fair request. Instead of Doug Ford's stream of "off-the-cuff" remarks, which makes him out to be somewhat daft, Mayor Ford needs to muzzle his brother and lay some cards on the table. Let people participate. Wasn't that what the 'Ford Nation' was supposed to be about? Likely Doug was taken out in the back yard by his brother and told to smarten up and get in line.
  4. Geronimo called. He wants his country back. He is asking you to go flood somewhere else. According to your own logic.
  5. And of course, there begs a question. Is it possible that our present concept of diversionary and alternative justice programs, the social and rehabilitation programs in prison, etc., are actually contributing to the falling rate of crime? Oh, can of worms for the lock-and-key crowd.
  6. And you don't have any problem with my mocking, right Bob? Really? What's your expertise Bob? The author put her credentials 'on the line,' where are yours? Oh, yeah. You have a blog. Not according to Corrections Canada: A Comparative Review of Suicide and Self-Injury Investigative Reports in a Canadian Federal Correctional Population How about the U of T Centre of Criminology? Criminological Highlights - Feb 2010 Oh, but what do they know, eh Bob? The U of T Centre of Criminology likely is operating outside of "any" standard too, what with the "ridiculous position" they hold with their research papers.
  7. For a guy who said something about libraries and learning to read, let me cite the Star article in a fashion that will make sense to you: Get it? You asked, I gave you an example of two things: Doug Ford bullshitting and a example of libray use increasing at a branch. I believe you suspect many things.
  8. In this particular discussion, it is of no matter is it? You have admitted you already have no clue and, furthermore, don't know how to get a clue. Right Boges, depending on who you ask? But cuts are OK anyways, if what the Ford Nation is saying is true. I am just taking counterpoint and offering you back the same sort of reasoning. I did offer a couple of stories from the Star, but apparently such grossly biased reports are to be discredited even IF they contain a little bit of a clue. You admitted that if "...all these Libraries are packed and being well used I guess that would be a defense against closing them." So I did say these Libraries are packed and being well used as a defence, even offering the story from the Star as an illustration of that - even if, in a small way. But again, the story was discredited as anything, which is ironic seeing that you admitted to not having a clue in the first place and not knowing how to go about in getting one, you would want to discredit anything. If you were generally interested in a productive discussion on the issue. But you are not and, really, neither am I so there you go. Show me - quote it directly - anywhere in this thread where I have called "anyone who would even consider cutting anything related to Library services an anti intellectual idiot." I'll bet you can't. In fact, I'll bet you are the one that keeps bringing this up. Sort of like if you bring it up enough, someone will believe you. But I don't. So you go right ahead and find that damned quote of mine. I'll wait. I'll remind you from time to time if you like. Naw, it's Boges-ism at it's best. I am not trying to prove that cuts AREN'T needed. I don't need to. I am only questioning cuts because YOU are. No, that is more of an astute observation.
  9. Wow. Your laughter went right off my screen. Cool! (pausing to catch my breath and hoping my stomach is'nt bleeding from laughing so hard) BWWWWWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
  10. And I'm convinced that if you were in that lifeboat, you would jump overboard and drown "beforehand to save time and effort." You know, because someone said there was a bad leak in the lifeboat. Making you an instant victim of said leak.
  11. Why not close all but one of the branches and make it super efficient? Ok, that is ridiculous. Maybe close all but five. Well in their defence, they are Toronto's Canada's most widely read newspaper. But no, people usually buy the Star for the Sunshine Girl. Of course for someone who doesnt have any use for libraries and hasn't likely visited one in quite some time - let alone any in Toronto - your qualifed and wholly unbiased opinion is far more valuable than anything the Toronto Star could come up.
  12. So you don't know who Margaret Atwood is either?
  13. All the libraries are packed and well used and shouldn't be closed. There you go. Here are some more people saying the same sort of thing: Constituents to Ford: Lose our library and lose our votes Apparently he is incorrect. .
  14. Well to be fair, I am a fan of Monty Python. My apologies if that sentiment rubbed you the wrong way in my particular method of criticism. But you know, I just couldn't resist. Do your research. Nothing is stopping you Bill. Of course, it is much harder to do good research on anecdotes, or feelings and such. But a friend of mine said we should all feel so lucky. Gawd Bill, I think you are the first person who has ever played the victim-a-priori-victim card. That has to be a record or something.
  15. I dunno. You might want to find out from the people that planned the growth of the library system in the first place, since they had a reasonable definition based, likely, on study and research. What do you think? Well how many Tim Hortons does a city or town really need?
  16. But "Ford's Toronto" said it, so it must be truer, right? The libraries-in-Etobicoke comment aside I mean. It only makes sense. If I were inclined to make up facts, I would also agree to support them. You know, for integrity's sake. Libraries on every block? No, you are thinking of Tim Hortons too.
  17. You see? There is your problem right there. If you spend a little more time in a library - practically any public library - you would come to understand "literacy" means a titch more than learning to read. Plus, once people learn to read, what other free services have the same sort of choice as the Toronto Public Library system? You could say "the internet" but you would have to go to a public library to access it for free.
  18. Depending on who you ask. Is that like there are more libraries than Tim Hortons in Etobicoke "depending on who you ask?"
  19. Long Live Cesar Milan! He taught me, among other things, that my sweet, gentle German Shepherd is not my "baby" because babies can't leap up 6 feet into the air and take your face off with one bite. If we ever encounter any 6 foot squirrels, they are totally fucked...
  20. Except it isn't "right-wing terrorism," it is something else: lunacy, craziness, an aberration of otherwise reasonable people ... but it is still the fault of the lefties.
  21. Yeah, I mean, why would Margaret Atwood care about literacy? I mean, the illiterate can't read her books anyways.
  22. Really? Let's examine some Grade A bullshit and see if you can spot the bullshitter: Doughnuts vs books? In Ford's Etobicoke, it’s 3-1 Who's bullshitting now? But not in Canada right? I wonder if there is a reason for that? Toronto Public Library Hmmmm.... interesting indeed. No, the implication is that Doug Ford is an anti-intellectual luddite. If you choose to associate with that role, you are free to do so. In the meantime, tell us why Toronto should not have the largest library system in the world, or why the busiest public library system in the world needs to be less busy. Tim Hortons should be so lucky. Yeah, he said "libary." Tsk, tsk, tsk. These so-called "people in Toronto" were the ones that elected Ford Nation, are you accusing the Ford Nation of being petty towards the Ford Nation? Eh, it was invetible I suppose, you know, people becoming "exceedingly petty" over these cost cutting "issues." I mean, after all, what do "people" have to do with anything? Stupid petty people!
  23. You added a 't' I said "his message" not "this message." "this message", you are right, has been out for, well, decades. Anyone can access it do what they want with it. But "his message" - which has some unique markers - took a slaughter to get exposure. And what exposure it is getting. And that is creepy.
  24. "JMHO" but, once again, you ignored the problem as presented and take the poor-me victimhood upon yourself. No wonder you don't think the police do anything - because even if they did - you would still take on the role of the downtrodden victim. Gimme a break Bill. The fact IS... I didn't "ignore" your point, I merely used it to show you the absurdity of such a position. And it is absurd. And even a little circular when you look at it.
