Well first of all, I said the "Metis" have a rather vibrant community. Metis are not "First Nations" which I am presuming you didn't know. This presents a problem of sorts, one of defintion and extrapolating from those definitions. For a small example of what I mean, extrapolating backward, what do you think a vibrant Metis community means in context of your opinion that the Europeans DIDN'T live harmoniously with the indigenous population? In other words, where did the Metis come from? That is a tiny example. I talk of corn as one of the major contributors to the health and growth of the population in North America and not limiting myself to a small window of time: Origin, History, and Uses of Corn (Zea mays) Maize - Wikiepedia Wait a second. Who introduced the idea of "harmonious relationship with native populations?" And your use of "invasive species" is trying to make what sort of point? I mean, you can eat dandelions, I love clover honey and walking on Kentuck Bluegrass is nice on the bare feet. These are all bad how? Are you saying that there were no grasses or weeds in North America prior to the arrival of the Europeans? Gawd, one would think that when we talk about invasive species the first thing to come to mind would be Norway rats. But clover? Come on now... All of that to say that the indigenous populations ways of life were irrevocably changed, in fact destroyed, by contact with Europeans. You are making an unsustainable generalization about a wide group of people especially when you admit that the vast portion of the irrevocable destruction was unintentional by way of disease. That being so, then the introduction of iron and steel tools might have had an effect that allowed for the survival of the rest of the members of a given group. Yes, I see what you mean and can recognize the phenomenon without romanticizing the past. Yep. And then natives tried to convert native populations to the European Gods and their way of life. In fact, they would translate the Bible into various indigenous languages. But to simply state this whoe effort at conversion with context is empty. It is a nice factoid, but that is all. Are you sure about that? You bet your bippy it was. Starting with the canoe and snowshoes and taking a cue from the indigenous dress. And let's not forget corn and tobacco...

Does Canada need a defence procurement agency?
Shwa replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No, I am advocating that "...to inflict serious harm to our country……just mine our harbours and form a submarine blockade..." is somewhat absurd on many levels. Good grief Derek, if you are going to introduce flimsy red herrings, could you at least be consistent? Are you now saying that that jewellery store owner locks the store up at night because of "his customers?" So "unlikey" that it borders alternative history status and just as useful. -
1491, or, Was Pre-European "White Man" America Really

So are you saying it never happened or that it actually happened, but the effects were not useful? -

So you obviously didn't refer to the links cited, preferring to use your own opinion of "revisionist history" as the guidepost? Here, this alone crushes your "zero evidence" claim: An additional source of information on the matter is the Journal of William Trent, commander of the local militia of the townspeople of Pittsburgh during Pontiac's seige of the fort. This Journal has been described as "... the most detailed contemporary account of the anxious days and nights in the beleaguered stronghold." [Pen Pictures of Early Western Pennsylvania, John W. Harpster, ed. (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1938).] Now that is one small reference from Pittsburg militia commander William Trent. Do you have some other evidence that he did not write that, the documents are forgeries or misinterpreted, or that the event never actually happened? No? I didn't think so. So it would seem that your mere opinion on the matter is actually the "revisionist" kind of history, since real historians tend to prefer the written records from the past. -
Well for one, you are making a bit of a false literary argument in that you are basing your opinion on a rhetorical response to rhetoric. Of course there is nothing wrong with attrition, something the federal government will use to handle the cutbacks and I think wage increases in contracts arelower than the inflation rate. The point is that you quoted someone who is responding to union rhetoric as some sort of measurement of truth. It isn't and almost never is. Kind of like quick-fix weight loss adverts on TV.

The Jim-Flaherty-Does-Something-Worth-Mentioning Thread
Shwa replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Here is another notable thing, not specifically about James, but about one of his kids. Jim Flaherty’s son joins Fords at City Hall Also, having an MP of Jim's stature in your neighbourhood increases the security of the entire gated community in Whitby they live in. So the Hell Angel's aren't likely to establish their clubhouse there. -
Done! http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=19189 Enjoy bro!

This thread is created for CPCFTW, who requested a non-threatening, non-bashing thread for Jim Flaherty and, by extension, Prime Minister Harper and the entire CPC government. Here is Jim's official Parliamentary bio: The Honourable James Michael Flaherty Here is his Wiki bio Has Jim done something especially noteworthy that people aren't talking about? Post it here. Is Jim contributing something special to Canadian society? Post it here. Is Jim a great finance minister? Post it here. Heck, is Jim just a plain old good guy? Post it here. Please post postive comments only. Truth is not required.

Except the "This minister also left Ontario with 5 billion debt" part which is years old now and still stands as an indicator of sorts. More like a Flaherty bashing thread and I am all for that!

Does Canada need a defence procurement agency?

I didn't say it would be "easy" nor did I say that making economic adjustments in the face of peril would equate to positive gains in peaceful time. Yes, most customers and store owners obey the law. Absolutely and we frequently do. -
I would too, except for Back in Black. That album seemed to hit at the right time too, just as music videos were starting to hit. Fully agree about Van Halen. Don't even get me started on Van Hagar...

CHEZ FM 106.1 in Ottawa. I remember a fine day in 1977, at a campground north of Ottawa, when my older brother switched the radio over to this 'new' station. No more 1440 CFGO for me, from then on it was 'shay' all the way. CHOM as well when we could get it through cable I think. Wayyy back in the day it was Tennn-Fifty CHUMmmm...

Back in Black, when it came out, was THE album from start to finish. If you didn't know them before, you knew them after. But Back in Black distinguished them from Slade. Although some of the tunes now are overplayed. Shook Me All Night Long. Yawn. Razor's Edge is a pretty good album too.

Was the transmission of germs and invasive species deliberate? Did the Europeans not trade with the indigenous populations? Europeans have their own problems with invasive species. I wonder how they got there... trade? It is equally impossible to imagine American history without maize corn or Massachusetts. Tobacco and tobacco-related cancer deaths. Payback is a bitch. The Spanish were harsh in many degrees, sure. However, have you ever noticed how Spain went down the hill as a world power after they "discovered" the New World? Any idea why? Karma is unforgiving. This is a presentist view that ignores a vast body of history encompassing centuries of co-existence. They introduced their domestic crops because they didn't know about anything else. Until they found out about corn... and tobacco. And yet, at least in North America this intentional destruction did not happen. In fact, there is a rather vibrant Metis population in Canada. How do you explain this?
-
Nope. They only have bearing on potential performance. You are getting your tenses mixed up. The NFL is football's elite 4 down league. Nothing more. Only because it is in the USA. Nothing more. Find the cure for all cancers.

I read him perfectly fine. The current performance of the any force overall isn't measured by the selective test results of a group of unproven, prospective recruits. There is no dependency whatsoever, other than the performance of recruitment and testing schemes for prospective recruits. In other words, the proven ability of any given member individual overall is not the result of the selective recruitment testing. Selective testing only suggests potential. As well, a force needs continuous evaluation to decide which recruits it needs to improve it's current measured performance. Not the other way around. Next time a team selects a quarterback in the draft, ask yourself why they selected the quarterback instead of the next best available lineman.

Providing that the current trade schemes must remain the same. But I am certain that should some nation come to threaten 10-15% of our overseas exports, other schemes would be adjusted to compensate. I doubt there would be much of a devastating affect. Needless to say that the countries that rely on our exports would have something to say about it as well. -
Likely Drexel. Yes, but a series of tests on unproven potential recruits does not indicate the current performance "of the force." Not even in the Navy. Yes, but he will have to be satisfied he was merely one of the best quarterbacks ever. I think he can live with that. Only need one and he is at the top of professional football all time scoring. Three downs and two Rough Rider teams and I am in. Also the Grey Cup. And a tax rebate if you buy it.

Shwa replied to Mr.Canada's topic in Local Politics in Canada
You nail the racoons to the walls or something? I used a cage and a tin of tuna and it worked like a charm. Short little trip to the outskirts and problem solved. -
Yes, it is a guess. But until you can produce actual evidence, it remains the educated guess. No, you are misunderstanding the basic premise. The fitness evaluation tests of prospective recruits does not indicate the current performance ability of the force overall. .Who are these "others?" These guys? At any rate, CFL quarterbacks rate right up there with the best in the NFL. Let me know when you get around to it. In the meantime, Lui Passaglia holds the professional football record for most points in a career, almost 1500 more points than Morten Anderson. Lance Chomyc has scored the record for most points in a season at 236... I see. Video game sales. A solid indication indeed.
-
It might be, but it hasn't. So it ain't any fact. Just truthiness. Right. But base standards are not a measurement of actual performance. And no, you don't measure the performance of an air force by the physical fitness tests of the potential recruits. You know this as well as anyone. Meaningless. Especially league records. Which one could say about MacDonald's Big Macs. But Harvey's makes a hammmm-burger, a beautiful thing. Really? The players themselves have an opinion on which is the better game to watch? Hmmm... you've got me there.
