  1. You are confusing 'media' with 'medium.' There are certain nodes - media - of a given medium - TV, radio, press, including the web - that influence other nodes in their medium (or other mediums too) and these are known as the media elite. So, in a cursory examination Facebook and Twitter are one form of media elite while 4Chan and reddit operate other influences which might constitute an 'elite.' Plenty of internet memes, for example, make it onto TV and into the press. No, I don't think so, even if it feels good. MLW likely has very little influence on the web or with other mediums. I am sure there is a little influence here and there, but nothing that would constitute anything 'elite.'
  2. Because you are not an island unto yourself and belong in a community, which is the law of the land. We have had this discussion before and the answer is the same: if you choose to remove yourself from this setup you are free to choose to. Let us know how it works out for you.
  3. Who owns your local skating rink and football fields?
  4. But you could mention school taxes that go directly to pay for physical education and "amateur sports" teams, but you chose to ignore that. Why is that? Could it be that attacking physical education in our schools could be seen as a titch harsh? I have already addressed your links. You are complaining about government funding for infrastructure and events that will be used and generate revenue back to the government and into the community. You are equating "amateur sports" with facilities and events. Kind of like equating drivers with roads and rest stops. I have. I also mentioned that I am involved in community sporting organizations and while there might be small grants available to such organizations, by and large the users pay for the facilities, the events, etc., out of their own pocket through user registration fees, local private sponsorships and other fundraising. There is very little - if any - of your tax money received by such organizations.
  5. Both sides have interesting points. I remember there being all kinds of beefing about this in the NHL a few decades ago. There was the same beef about the 2008 Cards too. I mean, they were 9-7, but many of those wins were over weak teams including 6 wins in their brutal division. In 2004 two 8-8 teams, Vikings and Rams made the playoffs ahead of AFC teams with a winning record. In 2006 the 8-8 Giants made the playoffs ahead of the 9-7 Broncos and ahead of 7 other 8-8 teams In 2008 the 8-8 Chargers were in while the 11-5 Pats and the 9-7 Giants, Cowboys, Bucs and Bears were out. NFL Seasons The reality is, you pays your money, you takes your chances. At the beginning of any given season any team with a losing record could make the NFL playoffs and have a chance to win the Super Bowl. This wasn't some unknown factor that suddenly came into play, it has always been this way in the modern era. It's not like they can play 168 games to figure it out or 82 and its not like there is time for a fully balanced season where each team can play the other in a home and home. According to the setup Seattle did what was necessary to win their division and qualify for the playoffs.
  6. Are you admitting that Canadians can't go to the US to get treatment?
  7. Finally. Now, where does "amateur sports" fit into this? You have three specific examples of government investment in community initiatives, but where is "amateur sports" as a whole? You could say, high school sports are all tax funded. So why not go after all the tax money poured into schools? It is your tax money after all. Why not bring up infrastructure funding for local facilities? The recent payout of your tax dollars to renovate local arenas and parks totalled in the tens of millions. Why not cite that as well? Fact is Saipan, is that "amateur sports" is mostly funded through user registration fees and sponsorships from private - and usually local - businesses. If you don't believe me, go down to the hockey rink in your "small town" and ask around. By the way, practically every rink - hockey or curling - and practically every sport field is "built and maintained by users." They usually do it collectively, through a contribution to their community, usually in the form of taxes.
  8. In other words, you have no proof is that what you are saying? Because now you have gone from "all three levels of government" to asking me to prove your point for you ... about "small towns."
  9. Really? They "get" tax money - from the province and federal governments even?? I volunteer with several sporting organizations. Please tell me where we can "get" some of this tax money. In other words, back up your remark with some credible proof.
  10. An excellent shootout that was highlighted by one of the nicest TD runs in a very long time. How many tackles did Lynch break? 5? 6? Plus, when you have your QB run up looking to throw blocks you know who wants it more. Saints had it coming. Super Bowl champs the previous year and haven't won a road playoff game. They was ripe. Now we got the Colts-Jets snorefest (first half at least)
  11. No. The data is showing a labour market gap for visible minorities. She is saying there could be reasons... Now, wouldn't you say that having a university education would make someone more employable? Especially in an economy turning over to service based as opposed to manufacturing based. I don't think it is any stretch to think that a university degree will open more doors to a wider range of jobs, better opportunities. Don't you? And I believe there are enough studies showing the correlation between more education and higher learning potential, something that is important for immigrants wouldn't you think? So despite this 'widely held view' how come a university degree isn't helping foreign born visible minorities so much? So why is that? What is your conclusion? Sure. But for Employment Equity purposes, the term is discretionary. If you were applying with the past 25 years, I would say yes, they had the checkbox. It is interesting and I have often wondered myself what would happen as does B-C in his reply on the 6th (which I missed, sorry about that B-C) What do you think would happen if it was a decidedly Caucasion looking Metis or non-status Indian or a fair skinned child of Caucasian and Chinese parents? LOFL! Absolutely and I am betting they often do. You don't seriously hold that view do you?
  12. Interesting story from the Star, seems to come up every year, so consider this the 2011 version: Are Canada's top CEOs worth their millions? I find it interesting that there are shareholders organizations who are pushing for regulations to allow shareholders to have a say on CEO compensation. I thought they always had that vote...
  13. In Canada, we call it Employment Equity. There is an Act of Parliament about it. It has a section in the Act called 'Purpose of Act' and here is the text, which you can reference here. As you can see, slavery isn't mentioned, nor is race or any particular skin colour. And it also lists women first and includes persons with disabilities. Of course anything seems "vanishly scarce" when you're not actually looking for it notwithstanding the report from a Royal Commission in 1984, the Abella Commission which was the driver for the Act. Of course, by your logic, Parliament simply created an Act for absolutely no reasons at all. What were they thinking? Those crazy parliamentarians!
  14. One would think that for practically every community in Canada (I know this is true of the cities in the Durham Region) persons with suspicious ties to anything related to terrorism are already known and monitored to one dgree or another. They likely know they are being monitored too. There could be unknowns of course, but I am trusing our detection agencies to be pretty good about it. And, so far, so good. So if anyone is going to bomb Coptic Churches, in this country, a stinking security system isn't going to stop them.
  15. What history book have you been smoking?
  16. Gawd, Mark Holland, shut up. Let's pay for security cameras for banks first because we know at least one of them has been bombed already this year. Oh wait, the bank already has security cameras that they paid for. If those churches collect dues, tithes, etc., they can pay for their own damned cameras. A thought that the churches themselves are considering.
  17. Opt out how? By not paying your taxes? Come on now, that angle has been beaten to death - I want to opt out of paying for roads I will never use. But if you choose to opt out of using welfare, you are most certainly free to do so. And if you choose to opt out of medicare you are free to do so. Hire a private doctor? There are plenty within a few hundred miles of most Canadians. Hire away.
  18. You are seeing a direct line between the nation state and the global state. Don't you think there is a step, or maybe even two, in between? Even Orwell saw this 70 years ago with regional alliances. One of the best - or most often cited - reasons for 'nation' is a device against cultural hegemony - and in many cases, by 'cultural' they mean 'economic.' I mean, we can't sign a trade agreement with the EU because we call some of our cheese 'Feta?'
  19. I am not sure I understand your point. If you are talking about the occupants of those former territories, it was like any change, but not necessarily like a military one with all the death and destruction in small pockets of time. One of the best myths is the Boston Tea Party, which was a physical response to an economic pressure. If anything, I think it would be more true to say, 'The US was born of economics, expanded with economics, and continues to dominate with economics.' Heck, even the Civil War had economics at its heart. And behind that economic drive are a lot of ideas - creative, innovative and forward thinking. The US was dragged into both World Wars when they were content enough to profit economically, then look what happened afterward. Perhaps Americans like the myth of the modern hero-soldier, but it is the hero-business man that built it. And generally they didn't like to get themselves too bloody.
  20. I am not talking about "your former Empire" I am talking about your statement. Bit of a difference. People always putting the Yanks down to war, even Yanks themselves. Louisiana Purchase - 828,800 sq mi Alaska Purchase - 586,412 sq mi Combined Large Purchases - 1,415,212 sq mi Which is about, what 37% of the present size of the US? That's a lot of "expansion." Not to mention all the Indian purchases and small claims against Mexico, etc., which might push things over 50% of the country without warfare, maybe even more.
  21. Another nationalist myth perhaps?
  22. Of course. And as a 'modern' social construct, "social justice" is as equally valid. Surely you are not suggesting that previous forms of justice did not attempt to engineer the society under its own terms? The creators of the Magna Carta, for example, would disagree. And then cut your head off or burn you at the stake. Or worse. Whereas, it previously concerned itself with righting wrongs it has taken upon itself to determine that "inequalities" in and of themselves are wrongs and equality of individuals and groups in society must be one of the objectives of society and proactively pursued. It then proceeds to make things equal. Like Lady Justice, the balanced scales in her hands? If one chooses. Not more need to be said about that. Agree. And this principle should apply equally to everyone in their capacity. Affirmative Action does not force equal contribution, but it allows individuals the ability to choose to make a contribution equal to their capacity. And on the other hand, the resentment being show here, in this thread, is that resentment is created towards the society by implanting the idea that it is unfair, that unfairness exists and society must die, etc,. "justice be damned." Which is the other side of the coin, which social justice reveals as codified in our Constitution.
  23. How would you know? Are you saying that the bar to a nationally unifying force is U.S. style myths? Or are there other means used elsewhere on the planet that would suffice? Where we you in 1759?
  24. They are on the canoe.ca network, fringe maybe, but on the fringe of a large, supportive network owned by Quebecor, Inc. http://www.canoe.com/corpo/en/ http://www.qmisales.ca/digital.html Maybe not so fringe? Added in edit: http://www.qmisales.ca/digital/sections/newspapers_community.html
  25. All justice - that we can know - is social justice Pliny.
