While Michael I'm not one to name call so I'll pass on that, however you are an exact replica of many in Canada who have lost interest in making Canada an even better place. I never said Canada was a bad country. What I say is Canada can be improved. Each decade our government is faced with various scandals that cost us large $ . Our democracy has been up to the last few federal elections basically a 4 year dictatorship. Provincially it still is in Ontario and most other provinces. A true democracy has input at all times from all citizens. That's what I want. Then I wouldn't be forced to bail out GM or have my soldiers off to war with out first having the majority of citizens decide on these issues, instead of a few men and even fewer women in the upper echelons of a party (s) I'm also very tired of partisan politics, the in fighting and power struggles, attack ads etc. We need to raise the bar on politics in Canada not keep it at it's all time low. Recognition of the fact that our government is able to be easily corrupted on a regular basis is obvious. You can choose to stick your head in the sand and carry on, but I am not so docile.

I have checked with Dean Smith of Intelivote and have been assured that voter anonymity is ensured. -
Seems we need to address just how our government looks after Canadians abroad. Sad that this had to happen for so long. This woman deserves better. I will make it a point to check my passport if I go out of country.

The government should never be in the business of retail anything. Especially something as addictive as alcohol. Privatize it just like Quebec. Government still gets tax proceeds and we the consumer get to buy it in many more places conveniently.

I would love to have a cross Canada poll on this issue just to see where it lands. I believe this is just another erosion of our rights and freedoms as Canadians. -

Elections Canada had a representative on a talk radio show today 570 am in southern Ontario. Did you know that 32000 overseas mail in votes were disqualified due to arriving late to Elections Canada. Also a number of people said they didn't receive there ballots to even vote. Online voting would solve this problem -

Also mentioned in this article is that online voting is always a work in progress to continue improving the safety and security of it. Online banking is proof that a system can be set up and continually improved. Most of the security breaches that have happend on the internet have been human errors and not the technology. -
Well you are right there, yes I want my side to win. So what is my side? The regular everyday Canadian who has lost our democracy to a corrupt system of Liberals and Conservatives, and once in a while NDP's. I want to have direct democracy where my MP will be responsible to my riding and not a party boss. Online voting will help that process evolve.

The way things are going we do vote about once a year lately...lol

Online voting poll Are you in favour Yes or No?

Online or electronic voting is all about convience and the ability of people who are not in their home riding to be able to vote. People such as our soldiers, students, retirees who are down south, business people who are on a trip when an election occurs...etc. There are numberous reasons people who would normally vote just don't. There are many self motivated people who don't vote, because they are full of apathy about our political system. There are way more reasons to have online voting and very few that make any sense in my opinion. -

Please read this article it is very informative on security with the internet. http://www.canadian-alternative.com/Intern...urity_scare.pdf -
Here is a lengthly article that is loaded with lots of information about internet security. http://www.canadian-alternative.com/Intern...urity_scare.pdf Sorry for the length of the article but it answers all questions in detail. For those of you who are afraid of the security I think this article pretty much says it all, please give it a total read. Although it is a US document it is relevant for Canadians. This article was written by a US based Professor, William J. Kelleher.

Punked I posted a response I received from Intelivote on the other thread that is similar to this one that you also are involved in. Rather than post it here again I'll let you look there. There is a definate increased when online voting is used. That is not to say you will always get an increase but thus far it generally follows that route. -
Ok Punked, I now have a response from the Intellivote DEAN SMITH I will paste it here. Hi Tom; Several things about the 2008 HRM election are worthy of note. 1. The 2008 participation was down to 36% about the same turnout as the 2000 election. 2. The 2004 election turnout was 48% because the very contentious “Sunday Shopping Plebiscite Question” was on the ballot. A very hot topic that had people going to the polls and only voting on that question; some not even bothering to vote for the mayor or councillor races. 3. In the 2008 election, you could only vote electronically in the advance polls in HRM. Twelve days (12) before the election dates, you could vote over 3 days (Sat-Mon) electronically. Turnout for this electronic advanced poll was almost double the 2004 advanced poll turnout, (28,709 vs 15,386). This demonstrated a desire for voters to use the convenience of the evoting solution as the dates to vote were many days before the election took place and even before a much publicized televised Mayoralty Debate was to take place. 4. There were 101,080 voters participating in the 2008 election and of these 28,709 voted electronically - 12 days before the main Election Date. (That maybe where you are getting the approximate 30% number participation that you have quoted). 5. It is important to note that in the other municipalities we conducted 2008 municipal elections in Windsor, Berwick, and Stewiacke, they allowed their voters to cast electronic ballots up to, and including, election day. In Stewiacke they doubled their voter participation to an all-time high of 71%. Berwick had a more modest increase, and Windsor has a small one even though their major race, that for mayor, was acclaimed. In short electronic voting can and has increased voter turnout. When implemented with many of the recommendations Intelivote councils our clients on the choices available to voters increases and the turnout does as well. HRM will be holding a by-election in September to replace a councillor who won a seat in the provincial election recently. In that by-election they have decided to let the voters cast their ballots electronically in advance of the election day and on election day as well. By-elections have notoriously poor turnout, (last one here in HRM had 12% turnout), so it will be interesting to see if turnout is better with electronic voting added. I have attached a recent document created by a US based Professor, William J. Kelleher, that is an interesting read about the issues of internet voting. The most significant issue of late is the statement in a recent press release that Elections Canada will be looking to use online voting in Federal Elections in about 4 years (next election?) 2013 by-elections as a trial. http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianp...R-smf65C4Oo5Wzw Cheers Dean Dean Smith President and Founder Intelivote Systems Inc. 201 Brownlow Avenue, Suite 25 Dartmouth, NS, B3B 1W2 Office (902) 481-1156 Mobile (902) 471-1582 Dean.smith@intelivote.com

Well all I can say is "WHO IN THE (H) DO I VOTE FOR NOW? Hopefully some Independent runs so I can throw my vote away.

Yes I am back, and yes I am an advocate of electronic voting, because it will also allow regular Canadians to take control of their political system not only at election time but also during a mandate. It will also allow the possibility of creating MP accountability and bring on transparency in our Government. I can't wait for the day it arrives. The sooner the better.

What this whole thread really amounts to is that online voting creates more voter turn out along with providing a lot of other advantages. Any voting system even the present one can be compromised. In fact ballot boxes have been known to disappear. No paper trail there other than ooops it's lost. Online voting will happen, the sooner the better for regular Canadians. -

Really, you are hiding behind a veil trying to put fear into people about electronic voting. Ok people if you never see me post here again I guess this guy is right....lol! -

I don't believe you. -
I would bet on a slower economic recovery than what is being told presently. The manufacturing sector (which I am heavily involved in) is now pushing out all major orders to the 4th quarter. Most manufacturing is sputtering along in a holding pattern doing the bare minimum to survive for those who are while many others are closing up shop. The jobs lost in the past year will not likely return. This is because of our government not protecting our manufacturing sector to at least provide a level playing field with the rest of the world.

You can choose to believe what you want but truth is truth. The idea of evoting would be so you don't have to walk into a polling station, and could do it from home or telephone or cell phone. People who are out of country (our soldiers, students, retired people ... for that matter you) would be able to vote as long as they are registered to vote in the usual manner and have their electronic ID pin that they would get ahead of time. -
And those that just lost their jobs and don't qualify for EI are becomming very frustrated.
