Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake in Chile
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in The Rest of the World
Thats nice of you, but it seems that you like many other people didn't get much bang for your buck. I don't deny that Haiti is a complete disaster, long before the quake and we can debate all night as to why that is. But in any case large amounts of money was given by good people, in faith that it would be used to help the people of Haiti. That has clearly not happened. Even despite the large military presence, they're not able to deliver the goods. You are making excuses for an appaling failure. With all the money they collected, both by private citizens and governments, they could have used fleets of helicopters to drop in the food, water and medicine, by the ton. Much of what did arrive was accomplished by small organized groups such as doctors without borders, those who were not bogged down by "red tape" problems that they big players claim they are mired down in. NOT, because the roads are no good. The stuff was driven in the backs of peoples cars. And the military can deliver anything, tanks, supplies to the most remote regions of the world. They have engineers with the know-how. Do you seriously think bad roads would stop them? If they can't go over it, they go THROUGH it. So what is the hold up? No answer, just silence. How much money did they collect for Haiti aid, worldwide? No one knows. How did the money get managed, to protect it from misuse? No one's saying. That's why I say, there ought to be an investigation. People were collecting aid in every public venue, even at the drive through of Tim Hortons. You got ripped off. But the people of Haiti got ripped off even more than you or me. We only lost our money. -
Obviously you don't care about this enough to look into it yourself, but expect me to spoon feed you. Then when I bother to provide the evidence you insist on, you deny that evidence. It doesn't take me long to find these things, why can't you? Because, thats not your game. But for the sake of putting you to rest, here is more specific information. I doubt it will keep you quiet, but my point has already been made. From the same Transport Canada website, read the link and follow on to this report- "While incidents of crew member interference on board aircraft was the focus of the Working Group’s attention, it was recognized that inappropriate behaviour could be demonstrated before boarding. Indeed, indications of behaviour which may jeopardize safety in flight may be present while passengers are being processed by airline personnel or while they await departure. It is appropriate, therefore, to include in the definition of the problem pre-flight situations where a person conducts themself so as to indicate with reasonable likelihood that they will be disruptive to good order on an aircraft or interfere with a crew member." http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/commerce/cabinsafety/workinggroup/report/part2.htm#ii nuff said

Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake in Chile

Wrong. It's easier for you to sit in a cold basement and say it's all good and well, we've done a fine job. You can do that by ignoring reality. As you know in my thread I did point out, they took a lot of money given by honest people with good intentions, who wanted to really help Haiti, and wasted it. If thats good enough to make you happy, please send 50 dollars to my PO box... -
Sorry but I think I've done more than enough to prove the policies. People who express rage at the terminal are just as likey to do so while in the air, where the situation will be much more critical as the security and safety of the plane in flight is jeapordized. The transport Canada policy is pretty clear. I know you don't want to believe it, but thats the facts, there is your evidence. I don't feel like going on and on abiut thats already been said, and demonstrated. If you just want a pissing match, you'll have to find someone else to play with.

Are you serious? Are your reading comprehension skills that bad? The link I just provided was from YESTERDAY. It says that aid has yet to reach 1 million people. It's one thing to let the aid planes land, then leave the aid in the hangar to rot while 1 million people continue starving. Why don't you go and actually read the news man, never mind telling me about tinfoil hats. -

Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake in Chile
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in The Rest of the World
This news was posted on sources like AP, Yahoo, CNN. I wrote a threadshowing the evidence on this and you know it, you participated in it. It's intellectually dishonest of you to deny it. By NICOLE WINFIELD and RAF CASERT Associated Press Writer January 18, 2010 (AP) The Associated Press (AP) The U.N. food agency reached an agreement Monday with the U.S.-run airport in the Haitian capital to give aid flights priority in landing — a deal that came after the U.S. military was criticized for giving top billing to military and rescue aircraft. The United States has taken over the Port-au-Prince airspace and incoming flights have to register with the Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. Over the weekend, the aid group Doctors Without Borders complained of skewed priorities and a supply bottleneck at the airport amid reports that U.S. military flights were getting priority. French, Brazilian and other officials complained about the airport's refusal to let their aid planes land, forcing many flights to end up in the neighboring Dominican Republic, a day's drive away. On Monday, French Cooperation Minister Alain Joyandet urged the United Nations to investigate the dominant U.S. role in the relief operation, claiming that international aid efforts were supposed to be about helping Haiti, not "occupying" it. http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=9593476 And this week we have the latest bad news from Haiti: Published: February 25, 2010 More than six weeks after the quake hit, the mission is still largely in an emergency response mode. The U.N.'s World Food Program is limiting its food rations to 55-pound (25 kg) bags of rice and the Haitian government estimates that a million quake survivors are still living in the streets in makeshift encampments with no running water or toilets. "This is really a disaster of Biblical proportions," said Lewis Lucke, who was the USAID director in Iraq before coming to Haiti as U.S. ambassador. Haiti Aid Effort Marred By Slow U.N. Response -
Oh I see, only you got the real "facts", eh. The rest of us are "making stuff up". Tell you what, why don't you go try it then, and let us know what happens.

Maybe it's because they care about something more than just money. Guess it's a big drag that you can't prop up the rich by buying their consumerist junk these days. Darn, that's so inconvenient... Hey but that non-communist US economy has been doing real well, hasn't it. Now that they took the tax money right out of the peoples pockets and gave it to the banks. But thats not socialism though, is it... It's like this- pay me a little bit now, or pay me all you got later. Pick your poison

Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake in Chile
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in The Rest of the World
Yeah I guess you don't get to read much news out there in Winterpeg. In case you didn't know, they jammed the airports so full of military planes, they couldn't land the planes that carried food and medicine. Oh well Heck it's all good baby -
Hey msj, she got the "bye" when they let her get on the plane, no more questions asked. Meanwhile your ass would have been slammed on the ground and in the detention centre before you could say "I want my mommy"!

In that case sounds like she was "jonesing" for a fix after all. Thats what happens when they don't get their dope fast enough.

Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake in Chile
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in The Rest of the World
So far it doesn't look like Chile will need any American-style "charity" as the Haitians did. Perhaps they've learned a lesson from that debacle. The Chilean government declared a state of catastrophe following the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake, which sent tsunami warnings from coastal areas of British Columbia to countries in the Asian-Pacific region. But some officials have said the country will not see a repeat of the dire aftermath that Haiti experienced last month after its earthquake. "We're certainly not facing the same kind of magnitude of disaster as we were in Haiti," said Jean-Pierre Taschereau, Senior Manager, Emergency Response, International Operations, with the Canadian Red Cross. Taschereau said as far as he knows, the (Chilean) government has not requested international assistance yet. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100227/national/chile_earthquake_cda Sorry, no rock and roll party for Uncle Same here. Guess it's just not a useful spot for another military outpost. -
This event demonstrates the hypocrisy of our system, where the elite get a "by" on breaking the rules. My vote is she should be removed, but maybe thats a bit harsh for a single incident that didn't get totally out of hand. Reprimanded, suspended, I don't know. Voters should remove her at the next opportunity. It also depends on how well she does in her job as an MP. Greenthumb, I think you hit the nail on the head about her husbands hypocrisy over drug laws, and that he was caught drunk and probably stoned, in possession of cocaine. Coke is the drug of choice for the rich, and could be the reason why people who are arrested for coke possession are often treated more leniently by the legal "justice" system (quotes added...), while pot smokers and those who do crack (poor man's coke) often get harsher penalties. BUT... I do not support your assertion that SHE should be drug tested in this case, as I oppose mandatory or random drug testing as an infringement of the rights of the individual, where there is no implication of drug involvement. In my view, everybody takes drugs to deal with their personal problems, whether that be illegal drugs, booze, cigarettes, prescription mood stabilizers, etc. I do not want to live in a police state where everyone gets tested for drugs that are outside of the definition of what somebody arbitrarily states should be allowed.

Republicans Eat Obama Alive
Sir Bandelot replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I don't care at all about partisan crap. Here's what I think about the US health care situation- the people should get what they need and want. They should be honestly informed of what the options are, and what each would cost. If they don't want to do anything, just keep the status quo, fine good. But whatever happens, they're in a democracy. They should get what they vote for. Let them eat cake -

Terror attack in Austin Texas
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I too can only shake my head and wonder why these people would believe that western states do not use tactics like terrorism to promote their agendas in other lands, either directly or by proxy, through funding and training. Either they are naive, deluded or paid shills. In this case I'll go with the latter -

One bobsledders opinion: http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-features/news/newsid=433011.html#u+s+women+first+look+whistler+bobsled+track If true then I would ask how these things get designed this way. Who are the "experts" who would approve such designs, either in the VANOC or IOC. -
Terror attack in Austin Texas
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Acevedo reiterated on Friday his assertion first made Thursday that the incident was not an act of terrorism. "Part of our jobs in law enforcement is not to overreact and cause undue panic," he said. "And with the information that we had, there was no need to alarm our colleagues around the country and community members by using the word 'terrorism.' That is why definitely I did not use it yesterday and I'm not using it today." http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/02/19/texas.plane.crash/index.html?hpt=T1 Evidently not considered a "Terror attack". -
Terror attack in Austin Texas
Sir Bandelot replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Clearly intentional and a crime, but I'm not sure about the designation of "Terrorist" in this case. I think the word is thrown around too easily. Anyone who is a protester against government might end up being called a terrorist. I think terrorism means, an attack intended to incite fear in the public, ie. using terror as a weapon. He did attack a public office though, and harmed people he didn't know. Attacking a bank that has foreclosed your home might be a similar analogy. Is it terrorism, or is that becoming too convenient a handle? -
Wind Power a Boondoggle?
Sir Bandelot replied to Wild Bill's topic in Health, Science and Technology
I am not attempting to be an apologist for this industry, and certainly am no expert in wind power generation. You could well be right that politics plays a major role in making the decision to provide funding. My view is, if scientists should stay out of politics, politicians should stay out of science. That's not the way it is. This view is along the lines of what I was trying to say. There has to be a viable market share for companies to want to invest in R&D. The subsidies don't necessarily go to R&D itself, but to establish the industry with a view toward getting the research going. Scientists and engineers should have direct input. The problem is as with most things in our society, greed and corruption follows the money, and the truth (about what is/ is not viable) gets obscured in the clamour for cash. The only way to solve a problem like this is to have independent auditors and government that is not in the pocket of industry lobbyists. We are a long, long way from having that kind of accountability. Makes good sense to me. At this time it's not affordable. The amount of money spent on upgrading your home and adding new energy technologies still greatly exceeds any potential returns. If the technology costs more than the energy savings, it's a wasted effort. What we need are cheap devices in each home that reclaim energy waste, such as heat loss from furnaces and car tailpipes. Tremendous energy is wasted there. -
Atlanta Thrashers coming to Winnipeg?
Sir Bandelot replied to maple_leafs182's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Rumours abound in the NHL so don't believe it until its officially confirmed. But I hope so for the sake of Winnipegers. They need a real reason to live there, and this could be it.
