  1. I'd spoil my ballot before I voted for a party that supported mandatory voting.
  2. That's a fantastic idea - let's take steps immediately to ensure that more poor people make enough money so that they will pay taxes. First time I've ever agreed with something Argus has said.
  3. Voter turnout is an indicator of engagement in democracy - as long as it's voluntary. Making voting mandatory and then trumpeting your voter turnout is exactly like cooking the books and bragging how well your company is doing. I know it's a bit harder to change the system to actually engage people but it's worth doing. Mandatory voting is a bad idea. And mandatory voting layered on top of a broken voting system is adding insult to injury.
  4. Yup. All partisan. All the time.
  5. I agree with this. Even a Conservative minority could turn into a nightmare. Remember what happened in 2008.
  6. I laugh when Conservative supporters get excited about Trudeau being seen with Chretien and then we see Harper with the Ford brothers. too funny.
  7. I don't see a majority being realistic. The maximum poll number I've seen is 37% and I don't think that's enough. They're likely to wind up with 130-140 seats.
  8. I'm dead serious. This election isn't over - according to polltracker, the Conservatives are up almost a point overnight. And Conservative vote is more "efficient" (code for the fact that the voting system favors them more than other parties). I think Liberal vote would need to top 40% to put them in majority territory and I don't see it. Nor do I think the Liberals are nearly as bad. It's not been determined that he's a lobbyist but even if he is, I'm sure a full list of who is on what campaign would make for interesting reason. Everyone (even the candidates) have other interests.
  9. Really? Think you're going to undermine the easily proven claim that Harper's guys have cheated in EACH of his last 3 elections by making me dig up a cite? A judge determined. Read it. Then read it again. Until you get it. I'm more incensed by people who steal elections than people who steal money.
  10. I'm asking a good question. Right now, all we have is a juicy allegation. Who benefits from the leaked memo and what is their role in this? The Conservatives have an impressive track record in election cheating so forgive me if I'd like to understand their role (if any) in this. How many candidates have been dismissed across all parties for relatively trivial past comments? They were dismissed the minute any newsworthy information came up so that the party didn't spend its time defending them. This is no different. He's out because he was a distraction. I'm in no position to judge whether what he did was a minor indiscretion or corrupt behavior - and neither is anyone else. There is no information.
  11. I am. I'm also aware that the person that has run the most corrupt government in Canadian history, with his party cheating in each of the last 3 elections, is standing on the podium by himself. Because even his past PM's have abandoned him.
  12. It obviously does raise bitter memories - which is exactly why I'm suspicious as to who is behind the email leak. Where did you get the idea I want anyone to command a majority? I just want to avoid the Cons getting back into power - even in a minority situation. Or have you forgotten the past 10 years? Why does wanting information make me a party booster? The situation is extremely volatile and I'm concerned the Conservatives will be able to use this to get back in. It's exactly their style.
  13. We actually know something about what happened with Nigel Wright - there is actual information. You have nothing but a few out of context email snippets. Keep some perspective. Inappropriate doesn't mean illegal or even that code of ethics rules were breached. It also doesn't mean that CoE rules were breached. Now you're taking talking points from Derek. I haven't advanced any theory and if I were to, I wouldn't take up your (or Derek's) "crackpot theory". The simplest explanation (and that's usually where I start) is that Gagnier exercised poor judgement in writing an email and someone saw a way to use it for political advantage. Don't forget that TransCanada asked Gagnier for advice and then suddenly, an email that helps the Cons winds up with the media. See? You've arrived at a faulty conclusion about what I was suggesting. Maybe that's not your only faulty conclusion. More information. Fewer unsubstantiated conclusions.
  14. That's awesome. Do these extra people actually know who they're voting for or are they just there because they have to be? It never ceases to amaze me how willing people are to use the force of the law to implement some kind of quick fix with zero thought as to whether their quick fix actually does any good whatsoever.
  15. And fair enough. At least then, something is known.
  16. Again. You seem to have an issue with the concept of innocent until proven guilty. We don't know if this guy did anything wrong. And if he did, we don't know to what, if any extent the Liberal Party was aware. What we do know, is that an email sent to 5 people at a big pipeline company somehow got to the media 3 days before an election. Now. Forget for a minute what your NDP buddies tell you about the Liberals being just as bad as the Conservatives and ask yourself this question. Who would the oil companies rather have in power, the Conservatives or the Liberals? It's a no brainer.
  17. I'm not sure what you mean by PR in this case - proportional representation? People seem to think that the big problem is not enough people vote but that's not it. The big problem is not enough people get involved and informed. What's the point of getting more apathetic, uninterested people to cast ballots? What is that going to fix? Representative democracy demands democratic representation - and we don't have it. I don't get why the MSM is dead set against PR but they seem to be. The helped kill it in BC.
  18. Really? It's not bad enough that we're stuck with a voting system that wastes my vote, you want some voting Nazi to make me cast a ballot anyway? That's got to be the dumbest idea of the century.
  19. Exactly. Too late for any kind of investigation so the accusation will hang their during the election.
  20. So pathetic.... the most corrupt administration in Canadian history and the Cons would do anything to keep their grasp on power. Including, no doubt get their oil buddies to release an email a couple days before an election.
  21. Yeah, because having the Conservatives back in power will be so great for integrity. If the Liberals are doing something shady, then get upset. And I'll join you. But making accusations when you know nothing is only helping Harper. You don't know squat. You're running around making accusations and you know nothing. Nada. Zero. It's called unsubstantiated allegations. And who will benefit from the unsubstantiated allegations?
  22. And when you know that he's a lobbyist, you might have a point. I'm not defending anyone - just pointing out at the moment, there isn't much information.
  23. Easy, big guy. You see how Derek is enjoying this? Who benefits from a wedge driven between the Liberals and the NDP? Figure that out and then it might be easy to figure out who leaked the email. You might not like the Liberals but there is no way in hell the NDP is going to form a government next week. So until you have some actual evidence of wrong doing, you're only helping the Harper gang by going off the deep end.
