  1. This is ridiculous. Canadians are actually buying this nonsense that Steve has cooked up? Willing to support a PM who breaks the law?
  2. Yeah, we'll see. Four years of Conservative rule should just about put an end to Canada. I wonder which province will be the first to be handed over to the Americans? Alberta, I suppose.
  3. Saw something on the CBC the other day about a series of books that are geared towards children, middle school grades I suppose, called Groundwork Guides, published by Groundwood/House of Anansi. Topics include Empire, Being Muslim, Pornography, Sex for Guys, Oil... They are supposed to be "guides" about these issues, a means of helping kids understand and deal with these issues in a manner that isn't preachy but after having looked at a few of these books I'm completely shocked that these books are not only being published but are being used in schools as teaching materials; they are extrememly biased and in some cases essentially little more than propaganda. The book that concerns me most is "Being Muslim" which is written by Haroon Siddiqui... he either ignores or downplays the sordid history of Islam, repeatedly claims that Islam is misunderstood by "western media" and every things is peachy fine for women, calls Europe a "Den of Discrimination". In regards to the Danish cartoon incident, for instance, he complains that the most tragic aspect of the whole matter was the fact that 50 protesters were killed by "anti-riot police" and nobody in Europe cared--they were too concerned about freedom of speech, which he also claims shouldn't apply to these cartoons. If anyone has kids using these books, I would caution you to read them for yourself and if you find issue with them have a talk with your kids about it. http://www.groundwoodbooks.com/gw_groundworkguides.cfm
  4. Seems to be taking his time getting around to calling it... just prolonging his last days as PM, I suppose...
  5. Complete nonsense. The Iroquois and Ojibway were enemies, and the Ojibway had driven the Iroquois out of what is now southern Ontario. If you expect anyone to take you seriously when you blatantly fabricate history, you are sadly mistaken. Britain didn't have "colonies along the Lake Ontario shoreline" in 1763. Well, Brant did sell the land. Whether or not you think it was legitimate two centuries after the fact is your problem. There are a lot of people on this planet who have ancestors who made poor financial decisions in the 18th century who wouldn't mind compensation as well. Like I said, Six Nations is responsible for mismanaging their affairs. I'm under the impression that the problems are the result of internal fighting and power struggles. Again, an example of how Six Nations can't manage its affairs. Whatever...
  6. What you fail to realize is that the ordinary citizen is not really responsible for what the government does. In fact, many probably have had issues with the government as well--before all this started, I mean. So basically these people know what governments are like, but suddenly Six Nations decides to hold them hostage over what they (Six Nations) perceives were wrongs committed against them. How would you feel if your life was disrupted because somebody you probably would agree with under different circumstances has decided to make you at fault for what somebody else did to them? You'd be pretty pissed off, too. The sad fact of the matter is that this is a perfect example of how ethnic tensions are created in other parts of the world, and this just should not be happening in Canada. These people from Six Nations were given the ability to educate themselves and integrate, therefore making it possible for them to address their grievances in a more rational and peaceful manner. Instead they prefer to use mob rule and anarchist tactics to disrupt society. That makes them responsible for any problems that they bring upon themselves, and one has to wonder whether or not it was just this kind of nonsense which eventually persuaded the government to get involved in their mismanaged affairs back in the mid 1800s.
  7. Same thing was said about the introduction of computers. Also making the economy more green will simply cause people to find jobs in the field. How are energy efficient cars built, anyway? etc. etc. There should never be unemployment because there is more than enough work to do in this country.
  8. We have to remember that the Cons embody the worst of the extreme right wing of Prairie politics with the hardcore neocon elements of the Harris/Eves reign of error... Everybody in Ontario knows what the PCs did to Ontario, leaving the province with a huge deficit when they were finally given the boot. And let us not forget Mulroney and what his government did to Canada and what price they paid. Sadly some Canadians have fallen for the Cons thinking that because they consist mostly of ex CA/Reform members that they will somehow be different. The Liberals may not win this election, but Con governments tend to last only 6-8 years before the Liberals revive themselves and govern for twice as long...
  9. What "test" is required by the Royal Proclamation of 1763? If any of the sales and surrenders are "bogus" as you claim, then what about the purchase of the land from the Mississaugas in the first place? Six Nations is situated on land which was given to the Iroquois, and which they subsequently were not able to effectively manage on their own. Joseph Brant sold much of the land to speculators, and if anyone is to blame it is him; if the government hadn't stepped in to force Six Nations to conduct its affairs in a manner consistant with the contemporary laws, then there probably would be no Six Nations at all.
  10. That appears to not be the case in the arctic...
  11. You've already demonstrated that there is no point in having a reasoned discussion with you on this subject, but I saw fit to provide a concise answer to your header. But okay, you're right, there may always be an environment, but that does not mean that it will be hospitable to man, which some would argue would be a good thing, and many others would not care because they are only concerned about the here-and-now.
  12. Can you explain what a "DINK" is?
  13. Accusing someone of being a troll is trollish behaviour in its own right. I don't even know who you are and don't recall having a discussion with you before, but I think that my history of posting substantive posts excludes me from the "troll" category. The simple fact of the matter is your post as evinced by your header is something that I've come across umpteen score times and is no doubt just the same old falacious gobbledygook, so I provided a concise answer to your header. Can you disprove the logic of my response? No, you can't. No environment means people can't exist and if people don't exist there is no economy.
  14. So basically we shouldn't even bother and just keep on churning out the greenhouse gases until it doesn't matter, because we'll all be dead or dying? First of all, we should be concerned about what's happeneing locally; the health of Canadians can be improved by cleaning up the environment. Second, by cleaning up our act, we can serve as an example to other countries.
  15. Irrational as in the kind of irrational it was to suggest that all of the ice in the arctic is melting?
  16. That's right, I didn't read it; your header made it clear that it would be a waste of time.
  17. That can be mitigated by how the ridings are alotted. Really, the only reason for keeping this sytem is because the people that are already entrenched in Ottawa don't want to adopt a system that threatens their power. Sadly there are many people who prefer to blindly accept the sham arguments that they make for keeping things the way they are.
  18. Neither did the Nazis. That's the point. Yes, the Greens "jives with Canadian" but since they have nationiwde support rather than a regional concentration like the Reform or Bloc, then it's no dice. And for that reason Canada has had a divisive political system for several decades now...
  19. No environment=no people=no economy You only look at the cost and not the benefit. Same thing people did when faming was mechinized and computers were introduced into the workplace.
  20. You see, you don't even know what you're talking about. The Nazi Party was not a fringe party any different than the Reform Party was at one point a fringe party. They gained status largely due to things that they did outside of the Reichstag and were feeding on political, social and economic discontent; it was a revolutionary movement that would found its way into government one way or another. It's easy to say in hindsight that they did not deserve "credibility" but at the time they would have been reflecting the political beliefs that many Germans were holding at the time, and in a democracy that's what a political party is supposed to do, right? Same thing that happened with the Bloc: how did they suddenly get so much power? Because the sentiments were there and they gave a political voice to it; why aren't they banned, why are they allowed "credibility" given the fact that they want to destroy Canada? Whatever the case, you're just fear-mongering. The FPTP system is meant to maintain the status quo for the ruling elites which just means that Canada's decline and fall is a little more drawn out and subtle. Canada is facing an environmental, economic and social crisis and has been unable to adapt to this reality and it's probably now too late.
  21. Under the mixed member system we would have been able to vote for a local candidated and the party list. The party list would have been made public prior to the election, and if the names on the list aren't to your liking, you don't vote for the party. The names would have been selected not by the politicians, but by the party, which is no different than how riding candidates are selected. Sadly the system wasn't adopted because most people just could not understand some very basic aspects of the system, as you have just demonstrated. The system recommended is close to the one used in Germany, and has worked just fine since it was adopted. Kind of sad, though, that a society that has only really been a democracy for the last 60 years--aside from the failed Weimar Republic--is more democratic and politically sophisticated than a country that is founded on an 800 year tradition of democracy.
  22. No, I think people who vote for the NDP or Liberals care about their party's stand on the environment. The Conservatives just pay lip service to it and the people who vote for the marty know it, and so don't care.
  23. Honestly, everybody who doesn't vote for them doesn't believe or trust anything that the Cons say about the environment, and most people who do vote for them simply don't care.
  24. Prussia doesn't exist, though. So really what you mean is that Prussia had a militaristic past. Whatever the case, Prussian militarism is now completely misunderstood.
