Harper needs to step down
PoliticalCitizen replied to BC_chick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The Conservatives being "centre" is a temporary minority-driven condition. If they're lucky enough to ever get a majority and start pushing their true Reform ajenda you'll see how all of the sudden there's a lot more voters casting their ballots and the map gets re-painted red. -

True, but CBC is also openly anti-Russian... too bad. I like it here, more chanllenge -

So they are enjoying a true democracy and more freedom of thought. Australia also has PR. Did that break their parliament? -

Not if I only get 1 vote With MMP - maybe -
Thank you Jilles, Danny and Jack!

No. What Conservatives seem to be doing, however, is "forgetting" Harper's roots... -
Those subsidies surely helped the Reform fringe party.

Hahaha Nice quotes! Do you think the members of this Conservative-dominated message board would try to spin Hitler into a moderate? -

Even with pure PR none of the BS parties you list here would have a chance. -

This is true, but only because the whole spectrum is shifted to the left in Canada compared to the US. -

CPC didn't fly in Canada for a long time, but they sure kept trying. Let's not give up on the next level of democracy. -

In Ontario it was proposed that everyone casts 2 votes: 1 for the FPTP and the other for PR. They could be both for the same party or strategically you could vote for one of the major parties in your FPTP ballot and for one of the lesser parties in your PR ballot. -

First of all – thank you for another long, skillfully worded and well-thought post. You put my one-liner to shame Having said that… As you probably know very well, Dion was not #1 or even #2. He was the unlikely #3. And yes, there are more than 1 strong personality within the Liberal party. Harper’s style of ruling his own party is more of a dictature than anything else. I voted Green as I have for a while. I embrace the current reality where the combined will of Canadians stopped Harper from getting a majority. Yet the “Strong Leader” Harper was unable to win against a politically dead opponent. That surely shows his (lack of) potential. Hopefully he does that within the next year a la Jean Chretien, of course Your denial of the obvious fact that your party’s leader spent our time and money to try to grab a majority yet FAILED is hypocritical. Is that characteristic for all Conservatives (and Republicans)? Part of the problem for Conservative supporters is that you overestimate your party. You were just shown that even with the Liberals pretty much out of the game Canadian people do not trust your party or your leader and WILL NOT give you a majority. And how could they? Can you say Canadian soldiers would not have been in Iraq today had Harper had a majority in 2003? Merci beaucoup, monsieur Duceppe, for not letting him through! Not a chance. -

It doens't have to be a pure proportional system. It could be a mixed system such as the one proposed in Ontario. -

He will when his one-man-show party will be back on the opposition benches. -

And in Newfoundland & Labrador where he lost 3 ridings. I agree -

I donated money and lent support to the Greens. Unfortunately our electoral system translated almost 7% of popular vote into 0 seats. -

Your city - Guelph - is a great example of what I'm talking about, and I'm proud of such communities. Conservatives are beaten by Liberals and trailed by the Greens, all 3 quite close (over 20%). -

BC, buddy Aren't the 2 party US elections captivating enough to keep you from reading our boring 5 party election results? -

I hope it will be Ignatieff. If you've noticed his post-election speach was already bilingual -

What outrage? Who was opposed? Everyone was OK with a somewhat refreshing Conservative minority after a long Liberal monopoly. Harper and his strategists (I have to say they're as good as Bush's - maybe the same ) smelled Dion's fear and Liberal blood and jumped for the jugular. They didn't miss. Just couldn't jump high enough -

Of course the parliament is a joke to Harper. Who are they to DARE oppose his will? He could have stayed PM for 2 more years anyway. NOBODY WANTED to bring him down now (out of those who can, anyway). The PM should care (if the concept of CARING is not alien to him). The stupid GG should care (can't say the queen gives a damm). The only place Liberals are shut out of is Alberta. Just because Praries look big on the map doesn't mean there's more people there than in the big cities. Once Calgary is big enough and attracts diverse cultures it could go Liberal too... Having said that I agree that Liberals have ignored far more than just the West... I agree with that as well. A lot of immigrants who are better off than the Canadian average are voting Conservative. -

My thoughts exactly. Have you hear of the Jewish Autonomous Region with the capital of Birobidjan, founded by Stalin in the far East? Nobody hated them there... -

Look South of the border. Like what you see? It's a joke... like a two-headed snake with the same body. People are different, they have different priorities which need to be represented by different parties. These parties have to have a niche in a democratic country's political system.
