Expats vs Immigrants: Same Difference
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
In the past, if you were a rich young person living abroad, you were known as a remittance man. Nowadays, you would be known as a trust fund kid. Or a Westerner who retires abroad. ====== I am not talking about this. I am talking about people who leave their country to work and make money. -
The Velvet Revolution. We now have Slovakia and the Czech Republic. More violently, we now have Serbia and Croatia. Slovenia. All separate states along with others. ======= We must accept a divided Ukraine: -Galicia in the west, Lviv (Lemberg) as its capital. -Donbass (or whatever) in the East, Kiev as its capital.

Quebec, Alberta & Federal Government
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Meech Lake 1995 According to the ever predictable CBC's Andrew Coyne and so-called Quebec expert Chantal Hebert: "Let's see." ==== Disagree. Carney did not win a clear majority. The PQ will win in 2026. Alberta will hold a referendum. (It will lose - but the vote will be higher than Quebec's 1980). Think: In 1980, 40% of people in Quebec wanted a sovereign state. -
Quebec, Alberta & Federal Government

I saw Mulroney in caucus. In his office, among cabinet ministers. In public, in private, he was a master. I saw Chretien in private and random crowds. He was remarkable. Chretien liked meeting people, kids in particular. -
Quebec, Alberta & Federal Government

Correct. Razor-thin majority. ==== Have you read Crosbie's book No Holds Barred? In 1971 or so, he wanted to defeat Smallwood - a member from Labrador had the deciding vote. Such is politics. Carney is forced to do such deals now. -
Short - on what side? ===== How males/females go about choosing mates is intriguing. Guppies (fresh water fish), females tend to be large. The males are smaller. Walruses? Males are large - and have a harem of females. (Other male walruses are gay.) Bees? A large queen with a zillion worker males. (The exception.) Even trees are male/female - ask a biologist. And how does a female tree get a male tree to phone back? True - some species procreate without sex - they self-recreate , and some change sex. ==== Is the difference between X/Y, X/X? No. Here's my simple conclusion kids: Whatever the species, the female shows up with more. The male has less to lose. This is in fact the definition of sex/gender or whatever kids call it nowadays.

Patents - intellectual property. Apple owns the hardware phone environment. Google owns the software phone environment. With Surface, Microsoft now owns both - when content creators are not using phones.

True. I tend to agree. And the Mac hardware build is better. ====== But I can use Visual Studio. And I can control my environment.

Who really is the new PM Mark Carney?
August1991 replied to blackbird's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I understand why women chose Trudeau Jnr. The name. (His father was short but had striking blue eyes - an obviously smart man. Any woman would have been attracted.) What does Carney have that Trump doesn't? -
Unhoused? 'Takes a Trump' Herbie, let's consider this, uh, humour. ******** There's a broader problem.

407 ETR Rush Hour Promotion - Is the Province funding this?
August1991 replied to Boges's topic in Local Politics in Canada
1. Once a year or so, I have to drive through Toronto. This 407 is a Godsend. I happily drive through the photo and pay the bill when it arrives. 2. I wish for such in Montreal. -
Who really is the new PM Mark Carney?

I agree. But Donald Trump is also ambitious. ===== Women vote for Carney - not Trump. Why? -
Quebec, Alberta & Federal Government

I have always thought that a US President without partisan Senate support is a goner. And a Canadian federal PM without caucus support is a loser. -
Slavic Ukraine/Russia Civil War -How to End
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
Here, I very strongly disagree. ==== When the Berlin Wall fell, we defeated communism. Ordinary people were free. Russia is not a threat. China is not a threat. Ordinary Russians and ordinary Chinese can now travel abroad. -
Slavic Ukraine/Russia Civil War -How to End
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
Uh? Afghanistan? ===== NATO was created to oppose the Soviet Union, you know: Communism. In 1991, Reagan won. Heck, in 1989, the wall fell. -
Quebec, Alberta & Federal Government

Carney has a razor-thin majority - dependent on the NPD (look at the members) or BQ. For votes, he needs a good whip. Unlike Mulroney or Chretien, Carney is not a good caucus leader. -
Slavic Ukraine/Russia Civil War -How to End
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
Europeans: Numerous wars killing people. Americans: We get along - except for a Civil War.
