Gimme a break. This is not the 1960s (when the Soviets were about to take over - and trust me, JFK, LBJ & Nixon were right to oppose those guys. You Americans won.) The 1990s proved to everyone that the Soviet system, Maoism, does not work. Communism/Socialism does not work. ====== Russia? China? 2020s? We now live in a multi-polar world.

Education? Same standards everywhere? And who decides these "standards?" ===== Civil rights? Do I have the right to refuse to get in a taxi? Murder? Criminal law. Petty crime? Both criminal and civil. All 50 states? IMHO, what makes America great is that it is not one country: it is 50 different countries. On the issue of abortion, your US Supreme Court recently agreed.

SALT: Trump, Big Beautiful Tax
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in State Politics in the United States
In Canada, we generally submit one single federal income tax form. In this federal form, we must declare a residence, declare an income and we pay a federal income tax - the provincial income tax is a portion, it is not deductible. In Quebec, I submit two separate income tax forms. In my federal form, I can reduce some of my federal taxes based on Quebec taxes. In Canada, we pay our local property/school taxes separately. In Quebec, I cannot deduct either from my federal/Quebec income taxes. -
Rubio 2028 -Two videos
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Apparently, Rubio has used this joke before. It works. -
Trump set-up the billiard table. It was Poilievre to win the game. Trudeau Snr would have won - and grinned. We're now stuck with a bureaucrat: Carney.
-
Mamdani and PP are both good communicators. Similar. Here's the difference: Mamdani was running for mayor of a complicated city; Poilievre was running to be PM of a complicated country. Mamdani cannot be a nationalist. Poilievre should have run a campaign with a strong Canadian/Quebec whatever nationalist flag.

Is federal Canada sustainable? We can't buy foreign milk. And Albertans can't sell their oil abroad. Voters in Ontario are curious to know.

Americans are very proud of their technological prowess. Hiroshima; this recent bombing in Iran. ===== But is that the measure of a country's will to exist? Put paper on the table. Some 40,000 Americans died in Korea. About 50,000 died in Vietnam. About 3,000 died in Afghanistan/Iraq. Some 360,000 northerners (Yankees) died to maintain the Union.

Rubio is correct. Shut them all down. They have become slush funds for young people who innocently want to change the world. Worse, they are creating rents for potential dictators. ==== Canada once had OFY. Same idea. https://www.nytimes.com/1973/04/22/archives/youth-in-canada-drifting-around-with-the-governments-blessing.html

3. Civil War: Get Along
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Which game? ==== You Americans killed millions in the 1860s. Europeans killed several million over the centuries. We Canadians get along. -
3. Civil War: Get Along
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
All true. But unlike Europeans or Americans, we Canadians have never fought a civil war. We Canadians have a federal state with two federal official languages but no state culture. And we get along. And unlike Japan, we welcome foreigners. -
SALT= State and Local Taxes Can an American explain this to me? In Canada, some provincial/municipal taxes are deductible.

Plastic Canadians: Income Tax
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Correct. The IRS requires a US citizen to submit/file a declaration. Every year. Even if you have no income, no wealth. In Canada, the CRA/Revenu Quebec, we do not. -
Mamdani speaks well too, but you lost. Why?
-
1. Milk - loser 2. Education, Unions - loser ==== All things considered, I think that the CAQ might win.

Canada rescinding Digitals Services act
August1991 replied to Barquentine's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Let's see. Does Poilievre have courage. -
We Canadians have two languages and two religions - yet we get along. == You Americans killed each other - like the crazy Europeans.
-
We Canadians are largely Catholic. Draw your own conclusions.

This is so obvious. Pierre Berton wrote many books about English-Canada nationalism, and he missed this obvious fact. Well, he got the money...

Difference: US vs Canada
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Mercer was Catholic and gay. We get along! ===== Under Smallwood, when the Minister was Catholic, the Deputy was Protestant - and vice-versa. -
Difference: US vs Canada
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Old joke - badly reported. ==== Some Newfoundlanders are Catholic, Irish. But most are Protestant.
