Monetary Policy vs Fiscal Policy: Canada/US History
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Business and Economy
Carney as Liberal PM? This is a huge mistake for English-Canada. Canadian banks have never chosen sides. -
Churchill referred to the wars of religions, nations.

SALT: Trump, Big Beautiful Tax
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in State Politics in the United States
Audit? The US federal IRS system seems to be random. Like the CRA. Revenu-Quebec seems to know about me. -
Canada Sustainable? Oil vs Milk
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It is not a petty issue. In France, I buy food that clearly states its origin. ==== When I buy milk or cheese in Canada, I want to know its origin. Heck, let me decide whether it is good. -
I saved money, at great expense; I first travelled abroad because of the 747. British Airways. I flew home on a Air Canada DC-8. ===== Ernest Hemingway got to Europe in 1917. How? I suspect that he was white, male, tall, rich.

3. Civil War: Get Along
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Disagree. We Canadians often hate each other. Indeed, we often hate each to the point of violence. But then we get along. ===== Check out the FLQ. -
Canada Sustainable? Challenger Jets vs ICE Cars

I don't like this guy, Scheer. I met him once. He's no Chretien. But he shows the same logic: https://x.com/AndrewScheer/status/1941244552003846436?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^tweet -
Is America Sustainable: Urban vs Rural
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Why are urban educated women so opposed to Trump? Yet many young skilled men -handy men- favour him? -
SALT: Trump, Big Beautiful Tax
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in State Politics in the United States
WTF? 1. How does the federal IRS (CRA) calculate how much state sales tax a person paid? 2. Huh? 200K - why, God wish. In Canada, this would mean that if the provincial government taxes me, and if I earn more than 200,000, I could reduce my federal tax by the amount I paid to provincial tax. Heck, Quebec already does this. -
Born in the Bronx, raised in Yorktown.

Hilarious. -
Kennedy created the Peace Corps. Trudeau Snr did the same with OFY. They both wanted to duplicate their Trust Fund life.

Canada Sustainable? Challenger Jets vs ICE Cars
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Note to people who fly economy to Cuba: Your CO2 emissions are about the same as if you drove the same distance in a car alone. Many people have no car, but they fly. -
Canada Sustainable? Challenger Jets vs ICE Cars
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Note to Quebecers: Norway produces neither cars, nor jets. And it's not part of the EU. Norway, as Parizeau wished, has its own currency. ===== In Norway, a kwh is about 4X the price in Quebec. Norwegians do not waste their resource at home - they sell it abroad, -
Canada Sustainable? Oil vs Milk
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Additives? Gimme a break. ==== Here's your tell kids: Have you ever noticed that grocery stores have TWO very separate cheese sections? -One section -close to margarine- is for the standard Canadian 400g Cheddar/Brick/Mozzarella. -Another section in the store -closer to the deli- is for the high-end Oka, Brie. -
Is Poilievre screwing up again?
August1991 replied to Barquentine's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Coward? Barquentine, I have not read through this thread. ====== Mackenzie King lost a seat, and then ran in the same election, to become PM. Mulroney lost, then ran in Nova Scotia, and won in Quebec. Pickersgill was parachuted. Welcome to Canadian politics. ===== What strikes me about Poilievre is that he's like Nixon (or Clinton). He comes back. -
Why did they disagree? Both were federalists. In general, we Canadians get along.

3. Civil War: Get Along
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Disagree. Strongly. We Canadians have been involved in too many wars abroad. But amongst ourselves, we get along. We Canadians have a long history and despite our differences: French, English, Catholic, Protestant, we get along.
