Wasn't quite sure where to insert this article, however this seems as good as place as any. I don't know how many of you have heard of the author but I like his independence of thought. Doesn't anyone wonder if there must be something seriously wrong with capitalism, because no matter how much of the media or the universities are controlled by multinationals, there are always intellectuals around to challenge the system and dispute its myths? A cloud over civilisation

Health Canada fires 3 scientists

Editorial: Shield whistle-blowers IF Canadians want our civil servants to be able to report on wrong doings in the government we MUST protect them with protective whistleblower legislation. so far we have not done it, sp please STOP blaming our wonderful civil servants, for our politicians shortcomings (And no, I am not a civil servant). -
To understand the negative aspects of foreign ownership is not rocket science. This privatization of health care is an excellent example. If we job out Canadian health care services to American or whatever multi-nationals, two very bad things will happen: 1 - costs for health care will go up because there has never ever been any research to show that privatization is less expensive. 2 - because it is private, profits will have to be generated for foreigners, which will leave the Canadian economy. Lets's keep any surplus money in Canada to help Canadian society.

Seriously, there are millions of them. If you want examples go to Charlie Smith's articles in the Georgia Straight each week, and compare what he discusses, to what is in the Vancouver Sun and the Province each day (this is a BC comparison). Can you believe in today's literate world, we are a one company town (CanWest) as far as an English daily newspaper is concerned, in the Lower Mainland of BC?

So we have a Charter of Rights, Freedom of Expression, no Censorship in Canada, yada, yada. Right! Wrong! Every day there is censorship taking place at all different levels in our society. But none more so, than the newsrooms of our national media in Canada. Most of the stuff that is really newsworthy, doesn't see the light of day to the public for consumption. Anyways that's my two cents, on this issue of censorship. What's yours?

Martin acting as though he had majority, Layton says When are we going to have another election, eh?

70.4% of Canadians voted against Stephen Harper in the last election. Do you think the WMD in Iraq had anything to do with it?

Anyway Al-Jazeera apparently is not being accepted by Rogers Cable, as the CRTC conditions are too onerous for them.

Canada needs regulated energy market
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What I am against is the rich and powerful bullying the poor and less priviledged. And that is what government is for - to protect the weaker elements in society from the abuses of the business industry. That's why charity is horseshit. It depends on the whims of the rich. Screw that. The rich are greedy, and they need some controls to prevent excesses. Probably the main issue in this country is our broken tax system. It needs to be repaired, with a solid progressive tax structure, all the tax loopholes cancelled, and the tax accountants, lawyers and industry retired. There is no question there are problems with government. Perhaps a way to create some fairness in the system is to not allow a child of a civil servant to work as a civil servant. That way nepotism could be reduced, why is probably the major problem with the system. -
These trade agreements have screwed Canada. Look at our softwood lumber and our cattle industries and the bullying by the Americans. And now Americans want to privatize our hospitals and our health care system. Let's pull out of Free Trade and NAFTA now, the sooner the better. BTW These trade agreements are NOT FREE!

Canada needs regulated energy market

We saw what happened in California with an unregulated market. No thanks pal. Unfortunately business is way too corrupt to be left on their own. Them's the facts. All you have to do is read the business section of any paper any day. Business needs to be keep on a very short leash. -
imr.....your article by o'reilly is copyright infringement. you should know the mapleleafweb rules by now. Actually what we need to do is beef up the CRTC to ensure we protect Canada from our all-perversive neighbour to the South. We need more French and bilingual stations, and other language stations, rather than more US stuff.

You are getting carried away. The vast majority of Canadians voted not to have Martin as our prime minister. Popular Vote Analysis Canada Party/2000/2004/Change Lib: 40.8%, 36.7%, down 4.1% Con: 37.7%, 29.6%, down 8.1% New Dem: 8.5%, 15.7%, up 7.2% Bloc: 10.7%, 12.4%, up 1.7% In other words, 62.3% of Canadians voted against Martin.

Electricity: learning from the shocks Canadian governments needs to severely step in here. This idea that unregulated markets are good for the average person are a myth. Time for Canadians to wake up and smell the flowers.

Health Canada fires 3 scientists Whatever happeded to that whistleblower legislation, eh?

This hour Has 22 Minutes - a hate show. Al-Jazeera is the CNN of the Arab world. Get over it!.
-
Who is suggesting that Al-Jazeera was anti-semitic? Someone who misses Reagan? Do you believe for one second that the CRTC would approve an anti-semitic station or TV network. This is ridiculous.
-
We have way too much US influence as it is. Keep idiots like O'Reilly and the Fox News Channel out of Canada. Where is that Israeli fence contractor when you need him?
-
Do you only believe in freedom of expression for yourself or people you support? That sounds a lot more like fascism to me.
-
That does not seem like this is a good situation for Canada, or its citizens. having foreigners owning our resurces, avoiding Canadian taxes, etc. When the profits acrue outside Canada, it is not good for Canadians.

BTW....it was Sarnia that will make Moore a honorary Canadian citizen. Michael Moore broke election law, alleges young Tory Jean-Pierre Kingsley will have fun with this one.

Here we go again - Quebec Independence
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Well, no one is suggesting Ottawa do anything detrimental to Quebec's child care program. As a matter of fact, it was held up as a shinning example during the election campaign. Les Quebecois should be happy, and proud, that the rest of Canada wants to emmulate their achievements in this field. How you can turn a positive into a negative is beyond me. -
I think Moore deserves capital punishment. Don't be ridiculous. I saw lawyer Julius Gray, an expert on election law, on the news tonight, suggesting it was a frivilous, and without merit. What about your precious free speech? Americans are constantly interferring in Canadian affairs - look at their ambassador. Good on, is it Sault Ste Marie, that is going to make Moore an honorary Canadian citizen. Lighten up! I do think though that Canadians should go down to the US to lobby for, and support, progressive candidates. BTW, what is your little secret code =p?

Why don't we own our resources ourselves, so the profits flow to Canadians, rather than have foreign ownership, where the profits flow out of the country? I would prefer not to suggest what our Prime Minister did, moving his CSL offshore to avoid Canadian taxes, labour standards, enviromental protection, etc., as a good role model for Canadians.
