Canada's 38th Election Analysis

Oh, Canada! (191) -
How does foreign ownership of our resources improve our situation?

I thought it was clear from the link. What more information do you need? And what does reliable mean to you?

Conservatives are trying to have Michael Moore charged until the Elections Canada Act. I thought Conservatives believed in freedom of expression. Only for themselves I suppose. Anyway an Ontario mayor is going to make Michael Moore an honarary citizen if that is what it takes. What a bunch of clowns! Now more Canadians than ever will go to see Fahrenheit 9/11. (634)

Jeez.....no wonder some Quebecois want to separate! Haven't you ever heard of the expression: "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar?" Les Quebecois needed to be listened to, and accommodated as much as possible. Quite frankly the rest of Canada needs to get on with learning French. And the sooner the better. If they have not already done it, all federal civil servants, from cosat to coast, need to be bilingual by a certain date or be let go. Then we need to work on bilingualing our provinces. Which province to you think will be next to become official bilingual? Do you know which province (s) are officially bilingual right now? We have a long way to go here. I think maybe Manitoba, and possibly Ontario. We need some healthy provincial governments to show some leadership on this issue. Maybe it could be a grass roots project starting with our municipal governments. What Canada really needs is to get ahold of that Israeli fence contractor, and have them erect a similiar type barrier between Canada and the United States. The US is suffocating Canada. (785) -

And now for a little dose of Liberal reality: Headaches Galore for Paul Martin After Election Blow (251)

Like he had a choice, eh? Where have you been? Ever hear of something called ADSCAM?

What I'm saying is that according to the civil service, who ought to know best, the whistleblower legislation is not worth the paper it is written on. There is no adequate protection and so there will be no whistleblowing. It is all smoke and mirrors with Martin. Anyways Martin should return CSL to Canada, and make it pay Canadian income taxes like the rest of us Canadians.

There has been a lot of fear mongering surrounding minority governments. What counts is what kind of legislation we are going to have - whether or not the government is seriously going to address this most pressing of issues: "THE REPAIR OF TAXATION" It seems like the Liberals have not lost any of their arrogance. Now Martin is saying he is delaying the opening of Parliament. You make an assumption that if the Liberals are defeated we will automatically have an election. Not so fast. What happens if the Liberals are defeated? Don't the Cons get an opportunity to govern? Who decides? Is there anyone here that can anyone answer that?

It seems that the version you believe, is not the same version that Peter Lougheed, who has/had a lot of goodwill towards Quebec shared in his correspondence. Did it ever occur to you that you are being fed a lot of BS just as the other side is being fed a lot of BS? There is a lot of goodwill on both sides - we need that to shine through dialogue. -

How the race was won Interesting analysis - not the usual blather we got from the media pundits or pollsters like Ipsos-Reid. -

1981: Night of the Long Knives - A Myth? Bakunin.......what is the version you grew up with? Why did Levesque not support the patriation of the constitution? The reason I'm asking is there appears to be a lot of confusion surrounding what happened in 1981. -
Charter of Rights & Notwithstanding Clause

eureka.....thanks for the link. -
DAC....that is why I believe in proportional representation, so if the Christian Heritage Party got 5% of the vote, they would receive 15 seats in our 308 seat House of Commons. Even if one does not support a political party, one has to support democracy, and if a certain percentage of the population votes for a certain party, they need to be proportionally represented if we are to be a truly democratic society. The word democracy gets a lot of abuse and misinterpretation, don't you think?

Charter of Rights & Notwithstanding Clause
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Does anyone here remember this issue. I remember Lucien Bouchard in a federal election debate, I guess when he was leader of Le BQ, holding up a, was it a le Journal du Montreal front page, with the caption "the night of the long knives" in French. But does anyone remember why Quebec would not agree to the costitutional changes? For example, what specific kinds of stronger French language rights did Levesque want? Mapleleafweb states: -

Eureka.....I am really tired of Anglos whining about language laws in Quebec. Why haven't the anglo educational institutions taught their students to learn the language of the majority in Quebec? What is all this nonsense about the problems of learning a second language? Educated people these days know three and more languages. Don't you think it is time to get over it? I think it is anglos inflexibility that is leading to separation. Let's get some creative solutions here, not the same old, same old tired arguments from the past -

I agree with you about shopping in English in Montreal, but why not go to stores that spoke French. Only after the bombs went off did some restuarants produce a bilingual menu. I think the English school board - PSBGM was resonsible for some, maybe a lot of the language problems by not producing bilingual students. Do English students now have to be bilingual to graduate? Actually I think Trudeau's most lasting achievement was that he bilingualized a lot of the federal civil service. This took a lot of the wind out of the independentists' sails. Who was the government in Quebec before 1960? Haven't all the governments in Quebec been francophone governments? It seems that the main issue is power. Power for the feds. Power for the regions. How do we satify the regions and yet retain national standards in Canada. If I live in BC and am visitng Alberta or Quebec, for example, I want my health care coverage to be in effect across the country. How does that work now?
