I don't know that the NATO has the military to be able to fight a war in three places. I can imagine how big a force that would be. A few hundred thousand? Five hundred thousand? My point is that Pakistan and now Iran are where the threat is and most likely always has been. AQ has been defeated in Afghanistan and has abandoned the talibs to fight NATO. Yes, AQ helps the talibs, training, ammo, tech advice, some small AQ units, but the talibs are for the most part on their own. There's now some evidence that Hezbuhla (not sure how you spell it) is operating in Iraq. They are an psuedo army of Iran, the Iranian Foreign Legion. Another point, Iraq and Afghanistan are roughly the same size, however there are 140K troops fighting in Iraq and 30K in Afghanistan, with only about 10K doing any fighting... I think a light fast lethal force is needed. Wherever we detect AQ in the world, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan or Somalia, or at home in Canada, insert a fast light force to engage and destroy them with heavy air and sea support then extract. AQ will know we are not affraid to get them not matter where they are...

There are plenty of ways we can avoid roadside bombs, there are many different types of vehicles that can be used in these dangerous areas. The problem is that in war, the enemy sometimes gets lucky and scores a kill. tactics wise, instead of driving on roads you can move cross counrty line abreast, however your wheeled vehicles really take a beating, that's why an army needs tracked vehicles. The Canadian Army was almost all but out of the tracked vehicle game until recenty, we are slowly getting back into it. even if you travel off road in line abreast you eventually will encouter terrain that will require you to get back on the road, forest, mountains, swamps etc... Historical side note: in the Battle of the Bulge in WW2 the US Army was able to slow down and blunt a major German offensive in the Ardennes forest by blocking the roads, as the German tanks could not move cross country. Another tactic is to fly in troops and supplies with aircraft such as the C130 C17 or transport helos. Canada does not have transport helos yet, or C17 (we get our first in Trenton Aug 9), but we do have C130's there. They can great for ariel resupply, howver they can be hampered by the weather. You can use very heavy armoured vehicles, however they can be destroyed by a bigger bomb. They only real tactic that I have seen that works is the US Army method known as Clear, Hold and Build. It was first "invented" by Col McMaster USA, in Tal Afar Iraq. Using a large force (in his case an armoured infantry brigade) he cleared Tal Afar house to house, door to door. Then he had his troops dig in and stay, soldiers on the streets day & night. Nobody could move without US Army knowing about it. Then he brought in the PRTs and NGO groups to rebuild. It worked, and reduce insurgent activity to almost nothing in his sector. The underlying problem in both Iraq and Afghanistan is the we are simply too politically correct, we are trying to fight a serious war without our fangs out. Generals are more concerned about the press release that killling the enemy off in an aggressive manner. The answer is to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq like WW2, massed combined arms offensives, and don't stop at the Pakistan border.

The Liberals had no problem participating in a blockade of Iraq and enforcing the no-fly zone. That meant supporting ground attacks from the air as well. You certainly wouldn't have heard complaints from me about attacks in and out to eliminate threats. And after September 11, there was no one who was going to raise a peep about attacking al Qaeda bases and the Taliban if they continued to harbour them. My concern all along for Iraq and Afghanistan is that any attempt to make-over those countries was doomed to failure since the driving force came from outside rather than inside. At the moment, what you are proposing is a commitment that lasts...forever. Do you actually think that Afghanistan will take care of itself if they can rely on Canada to do the job with no timetable in place? Hi Jdob, I hear it's been raining alot in the "Peg", hope your not under water:) The Libs participation in the Iraq no-fly zone consisted of having Canadian Forces Air Weaqpons Controllers (guys like me) aasigned to USAF AWACS aircraft, we had no fighters in Saudi or Turkey at all. We controller the USAF and RAF fighters over Iraq. The prob with no-fly zones, blockades, etc is you have to have an end state. They too, cannot go on forever, they drain resources. The big prob with Iraq is that Saddam eventually had to be dealt with. A huge opportunity was lost after GW1 in 1991, UN should have kept going, or perhaps we should have directly supported the post war uprisings. The entire philosiphy of "Nation Building" in my experience is folly. Americans cannot build a nation other than the USA, Canadians no matter how well intentioned cannot build any nation other than Canada. When anyone attempts Nation Building, you always do it with your own pre-set morals, values and prejudices. You naturally try to build a nation like your own. Good intentions, yes, but it does not work. Afghanistan is not Canada, the USA or any other country, other than Afghanistan. Yes we should help, give technical advice, instill some "international" accepted norms, but any country has to ultimatly stand up on it's own two feet. "We can help lift the up, but we cannot carry them". The entire reason we are in Afghanistan, and we have all as Caandians forgotten this I feel, is to hunt down and kill AQ. The talibs, they harboured AQ, they are not even the real reason we are there, AQ is. AQ is still active and very dangerous, they do not have any love for Canada, and I fear we will see it on our shores one day. Hey I thought you lived in North Bay, its only 5:19 He's serving our country in Afghanistan. Says who??? What do you mean, he said he lived in North Bay and then critized the hospital there. There are two hospitals in North Bay and a new one being built. Where do you come from, is it because as I said a liberal represents North Bay I do live in NB margarce, CFB NB up on Airport Hill, I am just deployed to Khandar Astan currently... Yes, I have critized the NB hospitals, they are not very great, there's worse, but there's better. For the record I think the new hospital will great for NB, they deserve it in a big way. I have had the opportunity to live throughout both Canada and the USA, and the current situation back home leaves alot to be desired.

Just for fun... You actually cannot spend your own money on your own car according to your own whims. That is illegal. You may only purchase cars that meet government regulations for safety, environment and whatnot. You actually cannot spend your own money on your own kid's education unless the education you propose to purchase meets government regulations for educational criteria and whatnot. You cannot spend your won money on your own houses unless the improvements you propose meet with government regulations for home renovations safety, environment, fire code, etc. So, how or why should healthcare be any different? You actually can spend money on you car how you want, you can decide which vehicle you want (choice) what colour etc.. you can than customize it, after market stereo, rims, paint job etc... You don't have to buy a bland gov't made car. the gov't regulates, but does not build or service them... Yes you can spend you own $$ on your childrens education, private schools, private tutors, home schooling etc... again the gov't regulates but does not provide the product.... As for a home, yes you can customize a home, put in a pool, make your gagrage bigger provided you meet some gov't regs. The gov't does not build it for you, does not provide a gov't approved backyard plan....

I've never heard of a comparision of auto and home insurance between the US and Canada,is there a big difference in those two? My point was about private health insurance. Where I lived in Oklahoma you could purcahse your auto, home and health insurance from the same company and get reduced rates.... My point is that this is the type of Mole we do not need on this board. Has it ever been in North Bay hospitals or was this just a straw argument, disappeared in a hurry when challenged. I did not disappear, my break was over and I returned to work... I have sat in the N Bay hospital with my girlfreind and kids, 12 hours one day for a fractured wrist. One of my best freinds was in there for cancer recently, the place is a dungeon. He and his wife have gone down to a cancer center in Houston TX, he's going to be OK... My entire point here is that I have lived in both Canada and the US, have experienced both systems up close and personal, and we have alot to be desired here in Canada.... Socialist medicine does not work....

I have NEVER said, if you review my posts, that lower income people should be denied healthcare. I have NEVER said let them die, not at all. I have said we should have, and already do have, a two tiered system. Canadians pay the dentist. A Canadian that has the financial means to travel to the USA, and it is many, already participate in a 2 tiered system. They do not wait in lines at Canadian hospitals. Canadians love our system because most have known no other, and like the fact they walk out of the hospital without a bill. If they had much lower taxes, and access to private health insurance, they would like the system. As I stated before, if you make below a certain income level you are covered by the gov't, above that level, you buy health insurance. If you can afford a new SUV, you can afford private health insurance....

What if he is the one who ends up with no legs? How is he ever going to pay off his medical debt? What will he do for a living? He is only 16, not been to university yet or learned a trade... where will the money come from? Do you expect that he (legless) will get a student loan (who would loan money to someone in debt to the tune of $250,000?) and go on to university, earn a degree and get out making big bucks. Poor kid would probably end up committing suicide and you would be to blame. One mistake. You are a nasty father -- your kid makes one mistake and not only does he have no legs but he will never be debt free again. There will be ongoing treatment which will only add to his debt. I am not a nasty father, but I am not a pussy assed wimp either. Responsibility is what I have tought them, you screw up you have to take the consequences. In the USA if MY son in this scenario lost his legs, my insurance company wouls sue the person whom injured my boys company for the medical costs. As well, I could sue him for injuries/damages. In Canada, if this person hurt my son like this I am powerless, I cannot sue for damages, no fault insurance.

How so? Family is important. Who are you getting your info from? The govt does not pay our bills. I don't know about you but I pay my own hydro... The govt does not look after our kids. Daycares (usually private -- a mom with an extra room or the YMCA) are paid by the working person. If working person earns lotsa dough then they pay for it, if not the govt kicks in so that the working poor can keep working. This is a bad idea? Is is better for a single parent to work at Zellers (getting a $300/month subsidy for daycare) or stay at home and collect welfare ($1000/month). Which is less? Which costs the taxpayer less? Of course. And when your 16 yo son wrecks his car -- do you want him to be saddled with a $250,000 debt for making a mistake by driving too fast? We do, we pay health insurance premiums on top of the taxes that are collected from us. So our medical system certainly is not "free". No way! Combine me and my car on one policy -- that is too funny. (and rather convoluted I would think). Well, the car is covered for scratches but your not! LOL Yes, if my 16 old son seriously hurt someone while being stupid he should pay, and be saddled with a debt. The person he hurt may be saddled with no legs!! I came back because I was transfered back, but that's not what we are talking about. No, I don't hate our social system, I think it absolves people of their responsibilities. Families are not important, the gov't will pay our bills, look after our kids etc... any probs/issues, the gov't will solve it... I believe in personal responsibility. You helped make yourself sick, you should pay something. You hurt somebody, you get out your cheque book.... I did see the movie John Q, lots of BS in it. I lived in Oklahoma, I talked about the whole healthcare issue alot with my neighbours. They are not in favor of our system at all. They can purcahse group health plans, combine home auto and health insurance into a packages. They can tailor their coverage etc.... You can buy insurance to cover you for long term care, loss of wages etc... or you can choose not too...your choice not the gov'ts...

Actually I am talking about a large tax cut, 50-70% range. We tend to forget when we compare our system to the US system (in order to scare Canadians) that our American counterparts pay far less taxes than we do. I lived in the USA for years, if you had a job you had healthcare, and far better than we have here. I live in North Bay ON, hospital there is a joke to say the least. I take my family to the USA for anything major. You see, we already have a two tiered system. Why should I pay taxes through the ass so some guy that smokes 3 pack a day can have a new lung. Where is his responsibility in this. A person whom acts foolishly and causes the injury to another, should they not pay something for the treatment of the one they harmed... but again, leftards do not understand the concept of personal responsibility.... only the culture of entitlment.... If you make below a certain income level, you get medicare, everyone else buys insurance....
