I've still got friends from all parties from back in my undergrad days. Let's just say that was back before the right was united. Friends from both sides of the cosnervative aisle, a few Liberals and NDPers. The problem with an anonymous message board is so many people use it as a chance to show their nastier side because there is no fear of social repercussions. I am just as guilty as the next person to an extent. I don't start threads to bait people with. GerryHatrick, Black Dog, hiti, and saturn from the left; mikedavid00 from the right are all guilty of that. But other than that I'm pretty bad. It's the law of the playground on this board. Without strong voices from the right the likes of GerryHatrick, Black Dog, Who's Doing What?, Black Dog, hiti and saturn would turn this publicly funded message board into an anti-Harper hatefest. The uneven way in which the board is moderating doesn't help. I know this may get me in trouble, but it is the truth. Sporadiac "lockdowns", uneven enforcement of the rules and preferential treatment towards posters who behave sychophantically to the powers that be leads to some people getting away with things that go far, far past the rules of the board. A tone of civility has to start at the top.

CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"
Ricki Bobbi replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Find it if you want. I've given you more than enough information to find it if you really want to see it. If you expect somebody else to do the work for you, sorry... It aired in the lead-up to the election. I had the misfortune of watching the show that eveing and have never wasted my time since. That's why I didn't know it aired on Fridays. -
It's more than him just not appreciating football, but belittling it. That's where the wannabe eurotrash comes in. I never grew up with soccer but I can appreciate it as a sport to play and I can understand why people watch it. Belittling soccer in comparison would be just as bad as what Blackdog did. Weather is irrelevant to Canada getting an NFL team. Any NFL team in Canada would have to play in a domed stadium, no questions asked.

CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"

It is how the CBC works? Both of the other networks in Canada get more than 95% of their revenue from non-governmental sources.... No one else here is claiming LMoTP is an independently funded show. Any proof they get no funds from the CMC to make the show. As to the last part of the quote, the part in bold. If you provide a link then I will too... Fraiser and Coronation Street are shows that were produced for different networks and are airing on the CBC in syndication. LMoTP was commissioned by the CBC. Again prove where it's funds come from. -

OK, I'll answer these two questions together. Government subsidies in fields that do not satisfy the basic needs of society (health care, education, defence, roads, etc...) should only be provided when the market will not do so. The market will not provide for a viable Canadian television produciton industry. So that industry needs to be subsidized. The market will provide for private television networks in Canada. The $1.06 Billion dollar subsidy given to the CBC is unnecessary and a significant expenditure of taxpayer dollars. So this question is based on a false premise. Now that I have answered your questions, I'll remind you that you said. The questions again, why should the taxpayer's subsidize the CBC by more than $1 billion a year. I answered your questions, so how about it. If maybe was just a ruse ... power to you. -

Post #3 of this thread. (Link) That appears to be a criticism of the Harper Government's record on the environment. Can you please show a post where you praised the CPC. Something like that would be unique to say the least.

That is some funny s***! Thanks I needed that. Ahhh four posts in to prove the OP's point. The blind partisanship starts right away. As the first person singled out by the OP I can honestly say that I have criticized my party. Hey, it takes two to tango.... MightyAC you are more than free to start your own board.

Why is it appropriate for taxpayers to cover the majority of the CBCs costs? Which material would that be? -

Hmmm, very *unique* analysis. There is the rub with the leftists. Ignore basic rules of accounting and economics when convenient to make the case. The marginal costs vaguely alluded to here don't include a share of the huge overhead that needs to be accounted for somewhere. What is overhead you ask? Well that's the cost of the CBC production facilities, salaries paid to various producers, on air *talent*, technical folks. etc, etc, etc. These are costs that Global and CTV manage to cover without taxpayer money. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2006 the CBC received $1.006 Billion from the Federal Government. $946 million in 'permanent funding' and $60 million in 'suplemental funding. This represents about 2/3rds of the CBCs total revenue. What is a fair and appropriate share of this overhead to assign to a P.O.S. show like LMotP? If you say zero than you really don't get it... http://www.cbcwatch.ca/ -

Stig, that's not even close to correct. Let's look at the CBC schedule for today in my hick little prairie city. Here's the link. 9 AM - Curious George 10 AM - Clifford the Big Red Dog 1 PM - Antiques Roadshow 4 PM - Frasier 5 PM - The Simpson's 7 PM - Coronation Street 7:30 - Coronation Street Boy if they must air *Canadian only programming* they are definitely not following the rules. -

First things first. Was my comment the funny one or the cute one? -
Good on you keeping it at a higher level. I'll do the same. Do you have a specific example of the Conservatives trying to change the Accountability Act as it applies to this case or are you referring to the changes forced on them by the unelected and unaccountable Senate?

No those opposing the show don't feel that and haven't argued that. You have to misstate the argument because the true argument cannot be disputed. -

Public funds to fund a network is bad. Public funds to fund a network with an anti-Western Canadian bias is very bad. No contradiction. -

Let's put it in black and white terms for you. The current level of public funding available for program development is good. Public funding to pay for and run a network is bad. Simple enough for you? -
CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"
Ricki Bobbi replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Why should who get more? I"m not arguing for more public funds for anybody. The combination of the two. If the CBC were to get the same amount of funding as Global and CTV then I would have no problem with them pushing whatever agenda they wanted. They would then be primarily privately financed. The small amount of funding that goes to Global and CTV goes indirectly in the forms of grants to support Canadian programming. If the CBC were truly Canada's public broadcaster then they shouldn't be pushing a given poliitical agenda. One egeregious example, there are a lot of Canadian taxpayers out there who objected to paying to have George Stromobolopolous campaign against the Conservative Party of Canada on his publicly-funded television program. (The Hour episode Air Date January 20th, 2006.) If the CBC wants to push its agenda let it become a poor man's PBS. -

Again, I know it's tough for you if the world isn't 100% black and white. Sorry won't put an exact dollar figure on it for you. But actually read the rest of my post and the logic will become clear. The Government should not be funding a major television network in Canada. The market has seen place to provide two. In the absence of Mother Corp a third would likely spring up. Thus a major television network in Canada should not be advancing a political agenda while receiving a substantial portion of its operation capital from the taxpayers. To make thing easier I'll let you define substantial portion of operating capital ... if you understand the terminology. -
Here is the poll. (link) Very interesting stuff. If an election were held today it would mean another CPC minority with even tighter numbers. The Greens are a wild card. They could end up tipping the balance for some Ontario seats to the Conservatives, which would partially offset their losses in Quebec. The real losers out of the deal look like the NDP...
