Scathing Review of Michael Ignatieff
Jerry J. Fortin replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Politics in Canada is starting to change. Negative or attack politics are now common. Leaders are under heavy scrutiny, and scandals are more common. In the case of Iggy, I think the Liberal Party is now facing some challenges to be sure, but this woman is simply spouting off. Who is she? The wife of a former leader, the very first Liberal leader not elected as Prime Minister. Talk about legacy, the Dion's simply don't want that distinction and would actually campaign to kill the party rather than have it stand. Hard to believe? Just think about it. -

Canadian Identity: un-American
Jerry J. Fortin replied to Sniglet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Unbelievable, what else can be said. Canada became an independent nation in 1867 but we did not have citizens until 1947! A bad case of a lack of understanding on some persons part. -

A tempest in a tea cup! The wife of an outed ex leader speaks her piece and the wheels fall off? Somehow that doesn't sound all that credible to me. -
The wheels of justice always seem to turn too slowly for most of us.

I have no idea what your fixation on drug use really means, but let me tell you something, please. I think that you have trouble with reading comprehension. I don't think you really read other peoples posts as much as you interpret them to your own liking. With as due respect I would suggest YOU do some reading up on our constitution. Start with the original 1867 version. Try section 133; If you would read a little deeper with a little more understanding you may find that Quebec had something to do with the talks regarding the 1982 version of the Constitution. Where did the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, who was also the Prime Minister come from anyway? Do you think for one minute that there was no attempt to appease such a large portion of the population while the Constitution was on the table? Do you think that it could have past the approval of the provinces without provisions desired by Quebec? Perhaps you are correct to say that Quebec didn't shove it up our ass, it was inserted that way because the people of Quebec wanted it that way, and the way forward to achieve that was through the elected government of the day. Had that government been Conservative the same effort would have been made. You may or may not recall that the Charlottetown Accord went down in flames as a RESULT OF THE Conservative efforts at social engineering, and they had a vast majority in the Commons at the time, but it is up to the provinces to determine matters of the Constitution, not the Federal Government now is it. In that respect whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Therefore it wasn't really the Liberal Party of Canada responsible for the 1982 Constitution now was it, but instead the provinces. In this specific case, how many provinces do you think would have wanted this nation to be bilingual? Name them please.... -
Sales Tax/HST/GST - Other People's Money

I think most folks are buying what the governments are telling them. From an Alberta perspective, where we have no PST, the entire thing is a mess! This kind of thing is difficult for us because it seems like every time we leave the province we end up paying more taxes. Did I mention we are not real tax friendly here? -

Why do people insist on making things up. I didn't say anybody made anything up at all now did I. I said it was rich making an accusation that cannot be proven. -

Words that cannot be seen.....that is rich. Want to buy a bridge? -
I ride the rails. 28 million pounds of train at a time. Trust me there is a lot of stress in my job. We write federal mandated rules every three years, do not pass and you don't work. 24 hour call 365 days a year. You have no idea when you are coming or going. A trip may take 18 hours there and back or it may take 41 hours. In my view we don't get paid enough.

Yet the facts are the facts. These things have been done, and we are the worse for it. I usually disagree with your posts, but here you have made some valid points. -

I would suggest consumption taxes are the most fair way to go. Below the poverty line, there should be an across the board exemption. -
Thanks Riverwind! I did not mean to offend , but I did feel that I had to say it.

Quebec is Quebec! They are a distinct society. They pass laws to preserve that society, so what? I dislike Bill 101 because I think it is a flawed document, but I am guessing that you feel the opposite way. They had a policy of paying people to have babies at one point if I recall correctly. You might think that is a good idea, I think it a waste of tax dollars. To counter your point I would say that in Canada 75% of the population is English speaking and has French shoved up our ass by a province who cooks its books to stay on the dole. You can trash whomsoever you like, it labels you as a trash artist. A legacy fit for you if nobody else. -
Think very carefully now....did I say that or did you? What I said was .."So in essence the scientists are playing politics, is that really news worthy?" What you believe to be my feelings and my definitions are entirely false and represent your own misguided approach to what was said. I said what I meant and mean what I say. Scientists playing politics is not new, been going on for ages. Media hype and news creation has been gong on forever as well. Put the two together and you get a nice little story. How much was leaked on purpose on this or any other issue remains a question. One not to be resolved easily. My point was that there was nothing new going on in my view. I believe a naive fool would believe that people getting fired for a dissenting voice is something new or news worthy. As to ANYONE breaking laws, that is something that happens every day in every nation on this earth. Scientists are not gods or priests and are just a prone to human error as the rest of us.

Quebec has much more than just the French in it, or didn't you know that? In addition many Quebecers leave the province, and those may or may not be French speaking. -
I wouldn't be swinging from the rafters just yet folks. It seems to me there is a bunch of dirt being dug up, most of it looks very Tory. It will take time to play out, but I will suggest that there will be a swing away from the Tory party soon.

My first "Canadian" relative was buried in Quebec in 1703. My grandfather came west to Alberta in 1903. I don't seem to fit into one of the four groups..... -

I trust government to squeeze the citizen to the best of its ability. There is a will, so a way will be found to bilk us of every nickel they can to cover their bogus budgets. -
I pay big bucks in union dues. Then again I get paid big bucks to work. I figure 6 digits a year is a good gig. I work lots of hours, but only go to work 8 times one month and 7 times the next. I get 6 weeks of vacation per year, I can get two days off after working 1075 miles, and get the rest of the month off when I get 4300 miles in. On average I get about 14 to 15 days off every month. All thanks to the union I might add. The need for a union may or may not exist, but I can tell you I certainly appreciate my union. Did I mention that my company made a few billion in after tax profits last year? Let me say this in closing, unions are a legally expressed desire of employees to have themselves represented in contract negotiations. The unions are sanctioned by law, and that just isn't going to change no matter what folks say. Go ahead be jealous of the working folks that have a union if you like, but those of us that are members have our say as well.

I think it is safe to say that nail one has been found. I guess it depends on how many more nails are found, and who and how the hammer is used.
