$5 Billion Renovation for the Federal Parliament
Jerry J. Fortin replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Think about that. Why not ban corporate political contributions, and ban the lobbyists while we are at it. -
Government Cost Cutting Plan to Remain Secret

They answer to us when they decide to call an election, or one is forced on them. That is the extent of that. -
Environment Minister Prentice to resign

I think he will be back, seeking Harpers job. I think he has figured out that the next election will bring change, and he doesn't want to say he went down in defeat. -

Anybody know where all of these "heritage funds" came from. If you don't know, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. -

It is time to solve the problem. Both sides are bias, that doesn't indicate a fair judgment, so move it to a venue where neither party holds an edge. I don't suggest that this is simply domestic given that the FN folks claim to be a sovereign people. Give them their day in court, leave the decision to an impartial magistrate. Close the door on the subject once and for all, that would be justice. I am on record here saying what I have said, and yet I do advocate a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible. I have no interest on either side of the equation really. -
Caledonia The town That Law Forgot
Jerry J. Fortin replied to scribblet's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Reality sucks doesn't it. You are a vanquished people, a few centuries ago you would have been lucky to have been left alive. Yet you were left alive, and not very thankful for it. Now there is just a bitter disdain for that decision to have allowed that to happen. -
If you thought new fighters are expensive

That is because we have no idea what we are doing. We need to be able to defend the homeland first. Much more money is needed. -

What part did I miss. You guys lost, period. You were given lands, some of which you gave away. You were allowed to retain your society by your own designs to the degree we allowed. FN's get free houses, free health care, free education, can hunt and fish to their hearts content on crown land, and don't have to work. Lets nt get into the entire tax issue. Yet that is not enough you want more, in fact you want far more then was agreed to when you entered into those agreement. I pity the pathetic souls who decide to live off the avails of hard working tax paying citizens. I suggest that we call a spade a spade here. Give them self government over their existing treaty lands. Cut off all funding to FN's and forward all claims to an international court. -

I would like to see the Conservatives lose the province, but not at the cost of GIVING away a strategic asset. I cannot believe that the feds will allow this to happen. -

No doubt they did not accept the reality of authority over themselves, the truth hurts. Is now the time to bring up the fact that the Six Nations were anti-British, picked the wrong side in the US Civil War and only then decided to return to Canada and then lay claim to lands they wanted after decades of not even being in the country? -
An Indian Industry has emerged amid the wreckage
Jerry J. Fortin replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The myth is one thing, the reality another. I will venture to say that what was intended was that the Crown held all land, and specifically gave away small defined pieces to native peoples. I will further suggest that one of the legally entitled representatives of those native peoples, in fact sold vast fractions of the disputed Six Nations lands during hard times. Thats right the land was sold to citizens by the Six Nations themselves, but of course now they want it back. Good luck with that. When the courts decide to do that, I will leave the nation myself. I mean really when the rul of law ceases to protect and begins to oppress the citizens then it is time to go. -

Jerry J. Fortin replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You do that. I also invite every other person to provide whatever it is they want as documentary proof of whatever the hell they want. So what? A nation will not be torn up over this issue. It can and will get messy but that is it. So now is the time to solve these problems. All current claims and or titles should be put on the table. Each group of First Nations peoples ought to be able to have a say in determining their own destiny. Its time to put the chips on the table folks. Deal with ALL FN peoples one group at a time, chosen by lottery, and resolve the issues at hand permanently. This will not be quick. This will not be easy. This will not be without much pain and anguish on all sides. This can be done. -

I wonder when we will elect a leader to solve this problem once and for all. Part of the resolution damned well ought to be a trip to an international court to sanction the document. Both sides of this argument deserve a slap upside their heads. It needs to get done and quickly. -

Jerry J. Fortin replied to M.Dancer's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It can also be said that this government is doing a number of things, none of them well. I simply can't believe we are debating this subject, when damned near every citizen of this nation knows we cannot defend our own borders. It is foolish to believe that we should ignore this fact and focus instead on our "treaty" obligations and our pathetic attempts at force projection around the globe. Every time we do get involved, it seems we are sending our citizens into harms way virtually unprepared for the situation they were sent to deal with. This nation lacks a sense of identity and with that a political will and functional purpose. Blame for this egregious national misconduct lays at our own feet. We need to come together as a nation, design and build a national defense infrastructure, merely to provide the national security of a free society. There is so damned much nation building needed in Canada that only the political leadership can be looked to for answers. Should this nation ever get its game together then we may discuss how we choose to use our military as an extension of our own foreign policy. Its just that one little fly in the ointment. We need a visionary leader to guide our steps forward. A really good leader will define a path that would serve to create the international identity that we desire. Its what we a really talking about here folks, the near complete lack of identity that this nation has. -

Currently in my opinion we are not. Nor shall we be anytime soon, unless we wake up and smell the coffee here folks. We need to get off the dime and start doing things differently. -
That is not the point, it was not a partisan shot. My point was simply that alternatives exist and historical relevance is to be kept in mind. The pendulum always swings.........

CRTC holds hearings on rural broadband
Jerry J. Fortin replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This issue could spawn an entirely different issue of the day with respect to the furtherance of development in this nation. A leader that took a slanted platform of nation building and fiscal prudence would be able to use this. -
Dude, no disrespect but why must you and your brothers and sisters at arms, have to go to foreign lands and enter into armed conflicts in the first place. This is Canada, not the USA, our interests are internal not external. We are under no known national security threat and could seriously use the money going toward our forces to be spent in our own nation. Thats what many folks think, and there is power in their ideas. In my mind expenditures on armed forces is not merely justified but desirable under the proper conditions. Exporting dollars that we borrowed at interest to purchase arms from external sources represents a seriously detrimental impact to our economy and it has and will continue to cost us far more than is really required to defend the nation. The defense of the nation is the true goal here. The security of citizens must be enacted within the home nation first in terms of governmental priorities. That is just simple common sense. Designing any form of external defense while ignoring the realities of border security is sheer folly. This kind of thing is purely political and it costs the tax paying citizen dearly. I can only dream of the day when some visionary leader decides to preach the benefits of policies designed around "Home Defense". A program of Canadian defensive infrastructure designed to provide jobs and security while reducing expenses. Yes I am talking about a Canadian version of the military industrial complex. The creation of such a system may well be the only real viable alternative we have to properly deal with this issue.

Trust me on this, the world as we know it will have changed before the NDP are ever elected as a federal government in this country. The Liberals on the other hand are indeed as much of a natural governing party as the Conservatives are. When there is a change the Liberals will indeed be back in power.
