The choice has to be made by everyone, because this is already the edge: past here, any lie if loud enough can be promoted as real, and the reality itself an insignificant distraction. And I have to say, especially it concerns the Republicans, those of integrity, principle and responsibility. It is simple really: it so happened, how and why a topic for another conversation that the question for the public decision, the plebiscite even if not formally set so was formulated by your party. Is this the new normal? Is this how the politics will be, from now on? The point is, you cannot stay silent because silence would be counted as tacit agreement by the history. So if you think and believe, based on your principles and your understanding of integrity that democratic policies cannot be on this level and in this form, you will have to speak out. The reset didn't work and couldn't from all that we know. Ignoring it would a be tacit acceptance of insanity and there could be no excuses for that, to the history. This much, we already know. In your own way, any way you find and see appropriate but you will have to speak out. I think the logic here is direct and clear. But if you like, do try to challenge it.

I'm not discussing alternate realities here. For that, there are professionals.

"If the shopping mall wasn't provoking psycho he wouldn't have to go on the rampage". Another converted to the alternate reality. We used to wonder how it was possible and could happen in a civilized country. Here's how: only hand your brain over, voluntarily and cheerfully. No mysteries.

First Measles death recorded in almost 25 years in Ontario

Well "yes, we did it again" and keep doing it, as the song goes. -
A short while back there was a prolonged discussion about the future, the role and possible impacts and consequences of the AGI technology, if it's ever brought to a feasible technological level. Of course, the topic was explored earlier in countless apocalyptic fictional (as yet) stories about runaway AI but the advent of Generative AI (better known as ChatGPT and similar) embodied the questions and brought it to the attention of the research and general communities. Artificial General Intelligence differs from the slew of AI-related technologies in uncounted applications in the modern world by the ability to apply the same or similar level of intelligence to the tasks of completely different nature, approaching in this capacity that of natural intelligent species. Move along the timeline a few months, and we may glimpse new information and arguments in the discussion. Suppose the technology approaches the level of feasibility. Also, suppose there's a successful business person, like a billionaire who came to believe that it's them who have the best, and just possibly, all of them, solutions for the world. Humanity itself, and little less. A totally new condition, obviously. Never happened before, right? For example, they may think that negotiating the future of the world with Hitlers of today could be a great idea; they may not like the government that the people elected simply because it's not good for them, as they already know; and so on. And so, with these: the technological opportunity; the resources, virtually unlimited; and a good, noble goal they could set out to develop an Artificial General Intelligent Entity that will assume the noble goal as its objective, being successful in many different tasks on the level of intelligence comparable to human (DeepBlue, Go and so on). Sounds fun, already? But wait. Another distinct characteristic of artificial systems is the temporal span and computing power: it's much shorter than human and way more powerful, many many orders of magnitude that accounts for many amazing breakthroughs, like beating human champions in chess. Now, if we connect it all together we get this: An artificial intelligent entity that begins with general intelligence comparable to human; can learn and advance itself at lightening, compared to human measure, pace; can acquire any and all necessary resources, including breaking any codes; and will pursue the noble goal no matter what, because this is how it sees its place in the universe. It's what defines its life and make it worth living, you understand? Sounds fun, don't you find? I mean before we only had the nukes and the global warming.

Yes this is a fine example of a backlash on a bullsh*t when it ascends to governmental proportions. There was no cause. But here, governments just cannot stop doing the good things for the society out of its own pocket and never asked if it wants it and how much of it. They know better, so why stop or even limit themselves? Have vaccinated your unborn yet? Just couldn't wait, right? Ultimately, it us: the society who will have to take all responsibility and blame. We allowed and allow this style of governance; so we pay for its effects and consequences. The bureaucrats, they are only doing their job however they understand it (and out of our pocket). Fair is fair. -
It is about honesty and responsibility: do they have a place in politics? Do we need them? The founding fathers may never imagined that this question would be asked but here we go it's a fact now and ignoring it would only get worse - and all the way to Venezuela, make no mistake. So the question is in the open and it's up to the people to decide. There will be no running away, not noticing, deliberate ignorance as the answer will be obtained by the Time either way. Either it's condemned and thrown out; or it's the new normal and the new standard. A choice and crossroads that just cannot be shrugged away.
-
So "the reset" didn't last a few days as in Pennsylvania rally yesterday Trump again dropped down to vitriol personal attacks on Harris. We know all there's to know and there are no resets or excuses. There's nothing here we couldn't have known. A pathological, malicious liar cannot be the leader of a great democracy. Not just another election. We keep the democracy as the founding fathers envisioned and many generations built and defended it; or we drop it to the level of unbounded lying and worse. This level: right before our eyes. This is just as simple as it can get and the choice is ours.
-
It depends. If it's a result of a grown up responsible decision of the society, it could be the beginning point of a certain, much needed rethinking and renewal of democratic politics. And should, on the other hand, it choose to try the fairy tale option it should know and remember that it had the choice. So this conversation is important, not to the detriment of other important issues.
-
While the forthcoming election will have impacts on many levels, one thing is clear: it cannot be reduced to only food basket. While economic and global uncertainty is very real, fairy tale politics can and will do little and anything to solve these challenging problems. The conversation about the state and the future of democracy cannot be avoided, and it's up to the sane and responsible America, that is far more and wider than one party, to keep it going over the pre-election period, along and together with other important issues. The reasons are simple: first, a liar cannot be beaten at their own game, that is prolific lying. If you decide to play a lying game with a known and patented liar and have qualms and reservations about going too far, they wouldn't have those and you will lose. There are no miracles that could control prices or predict stellar and stable economic growth in a free market economy. So don't go there - leave it to the liars. Instead, keep the conversation about the things that you will do, and what it will give to the people. Secondly and also importantly, by avoiding this conversation and choices, we may concede and agree to accept the default ones. Will this be the new normal and then, standard of the political discourse for the future, for generations? To what end and where? Sane America has to speak to the people saying, again and again that to keep their democracy citizens will have to make informed and responsible choices. Including what is the accepted standard of politics and leadership. Democracy is not a fairy tale, but a society and choices of free and responsible citizens. There's simply no way around this condition and challenge no matter what and how liars will lie. Democracy via throat and mouth of the Beloved Leader does not exist and will not. In fact, it's the opposite of it. If unsure, look it up right in the Constitution.
-
It probably merits a topic of its own at some point, but for now this isn't an easy challenge but it needs to be addressed still by the sane America (that is, not just Democrats). Clearly not everyone will be thinking about high matters like law, democracy rule of the mob folks have to put food on the table, find jobs. But they still may think about it some time and for that, someone will need to keep this conversation going. See, it's not only about prices and jobs it's also about the democracy and its standard. This never happened before. It cannot be shrugged off and ignored because then it'll become the new normal. Lies, making up things and threats, "rigged elections", "just find me votes" all that would become normal and acceptable standard in the next age of politics. We now have no choice to ignore these questions. Can any mob boss from now on claim to run for U.S. president? So far, he was only rewarded for all of that. He has been nominated, with all that record. Is it the new normal already? No, no way it can be shrugged off.
-
This is the the main point about this election: it's a junction, crossroads. A pathological, recidivist liar cannot be the president of America that was. This much is obvious and the choice has to be made. So either the standard and the principles are reaffirmed and strengthened; or it's a zipline to the new normal. This, normal. No matter what anyone wants to see or not, think or not, these are the only options.
-
A pathological, recidivist liar cannot be the leader of a world-leading democracy. This is a fact, and it cannot be changed: it does not happen and won't happen. Rebrandings and confusion, bold lies will do nothing to change the reality. What can be done, is taking the democracy itself several levels down: to where the distance between truth, the reality and imaginary agendas does not exist; where there's no integrity, no principles and no honor. That can be done always, but it's not the same thing. And it's a choice in the full knowledge of the consequences. Want to play with candidates of the kind of tomorrow's Maduros? Find them cute, fuzzy and funny? Tough father syndrome, will take care of you and your problems? Just don't care and don't want to think and take responsibility? Sure can have your way, but know that nobody can and would cancel the consequences. They will catch up as surely as they always do. No one could pretend, for any reason and with any excuses that they didn't know or couldn't understand that.

So at the press conference today he repeated blatant, disproven many times over to the power of laughed out of all courts claims of a "rigged" election. The conclusion cannot be avoided: 1. Rebranding to "a normal candidate" and just another election" did not work and is a lie. 2. The individual in question is a pathological recidivist liar and he won't stop lying no matter what. 3. For this reason, he is obviously unfit for any position of trust, responsibility and power. In the future, candidates should formally execute their commitment to free democratic elections and the pledge to respect their outcome, or face ejection from the polls. It is sheer absurdity to play elections with people who blatantly undermine them. Democracy is not a mob rule. The alternative is known very well: Venezuela, Cuba and Russia.

This is quite an absurd, grotesque situation: Canada trains doctors for rich third world countries, while importing them from the poorer ones for herself (ostensibly with some qualifications, but who can be sure, in the poorer part of the third world?) Is it objective enough picture? In what universe does it make any rational sense? The incentives; objectives, the management structure, funding arrangements: it all seems to be wrong, upside down. And this why we are seeing these grotesque episodes. The primary objective and incentives for management of Canadian universities is now to make dough; training specialists for the country comes second. But schools are not private businesses, their managers aren't CEOs. Canadian problems with transparent and effective management of public functions and institutes go very deep indeed.

The answers just aren't coming. Was Hitler "provoked"? Was he a poor misunderstood child who needed understanding and compassion (and concessions, how else, one after another till not much is left)? So he (understandably and regrettably) unwound and went on a murderous rampage? Should every murderous psycho on a rampage be cuddled and talked to softly and then let go with (many) gifts? Your guess, because they just aren't coming.

Compare this (guess the author) "The only way we’re going to lose this election is if the election is rigged, remember that,” ... said. “It’s the only way we’re going to lose this election. So we have to be careful.“ to this: On 4 February, Nicolás Maduro said his party would win "by hook or by crook". Just look at it, the difference: the first one claims that he owns the result of a free democratic election or it's "rigged". The other, that he owns anything that is called an election, no matter the factual outcome. The distance is minuscule. They both do not accept the result of a free democratic election: how can it be any simpler? As part of the renewal of democracy that is needed quite urgently, all nominated candidates should declare and sign their commitment and allegiance to the principles of democratic elections or be excluded from the ballot. It in no way limits their rights to pursue any issues via due process but they cannot undermine the very process that is in the foundation of democracy. One can vote any way they like. But now, having seen that one thing they couldn't do is to pretend they didn't know or couldn't understand. All is here, right before our eyes.
