  1. Historicity?? Meta-time??? I suggest using the simple word important instead. According to me, every action can become a historical event unless nobody hears it fall in the forest. This sounds like bad modern poetry that I endure at the occasional coffee-house reading series.
  2. When married-folk remove wedding or engagement rings in other traditions (religious or secular) before going out, it represents a shedding of a sacrifice. They represent a symbol of the ability to make a sacrifice which is part of the bigger picture -- maybe something that is lacking in our world. They also represent a degree of strength. I understand that what we eat and how much extra time we spend praying (instead of feeding starving people next door) may be misplaced sacrifices. However, most of what we do and consume are luxuries -- there is no end to the things we do which are trivial.
  3. Look, Argus1991, somehow, part of me suspects that you are throwing this out here just to stir up debate more than you are truly expressing all of your opinions. The biggest paradox that I see in this report is that: 1) our government needs prayer more than anything else 2) praying to God to guide the Liberal leadership is insulting (hint, hint: maybe God has more dire emergencies?? maybe there are people in the world in greater need than Liberal delegates??) It makes me think of when I prayed before Christmas to get a new bicycle. I think this: is an important point and I agree. However, I believe Christians are to blame. I car-pooled frequently with one of my school-mates years ago. (We lived in the same hometown; we drove back and forth on holidays or long weekends. He made it very clear from the get-go that he needed to stop and pray precisely at this-or-that time. He pulled out his little compass -- like an ornamental pocket-watch -- and rolled out his mat outside off in the corner away from the traffic. I stood aside (partly giggling) like a bodyguard for about 10 minutes. I also sat beside an other school-mate during our graduation banquet who ate nothing because the separation of the milk from the main dish was unclear to him. He just drank water. These forms of devotion and dedication to faith are powerful. They make me feel small.
  4. Whatever may be unique to Wal-Mart may also be found in these threads: Unionize Wal-Mart or Let's Boot Them From Canada -- These Bloodsuckers Should Be Run Out! or Wal-Mart to close unionized store in Quebec or Is it morally acceptable to shop at Wal-Mart? -- UN finds widespread torture in China
  5. I am not a doctor but I do not think you have to worry: you are probably normal.
  6. You may be able to find out what other people think of him in this thread: Alberta Leadership Race -- New focus by candidates or maybe in this second new thread: Five bucks to vote for President of Alberta -- Shouldn' it be free?
  7. A patent on a word? I believe the words "spam" and "troll" should be patented. Many people mix them up. Some people believe they mean a type of delicious meat and a creature that lives under a bridge, respectively. However, but those people are mistaken. Both "spam" and "troll" represent fishing techniques and gratingly annoying forms of digital communication. Paradoxically, the latter one serves up a beneficial effect by making the rest of us feel at ease and less extreme when we speak our minds.
  8. Me, personally, no. That is not what I want.I am saying what I believe the rest-of-Canadians want and the demands they place on their federal government.
  9. Yes. Why not? Of course not. Between the Tories and the Liberals -- leaders notwithstanding, which party is most credible in promising a free lunch? Answer: the Liberals. Therefore, the rest-of-Canadians will forget about the past and re-elect the Liberals. Canadians have no other purpose for the federal government other than to redistribute the country's wealth -- and yes, the majority of Canadians are that selfish.
  10. What an interesting game. The candidate assesses the following choices: 1) winning leadership 2) winning a ministerial post and determines that he has much greater chances of winning a ministerial post by dropping out and making a leadership-winning friend. Makes perfect sense. We poor-folk do that all of the time -- but usually with our own resources at stake. Maybe that could be the intention of some of these "leadership" candidates all along?? In this game, there is only one gold medal but more than one silver medal available. The silver can pay well too. Regardless of the political party involved, I wonder if most of the delegates are just being duped and used.
  11. The market is the closest thing that socialists will ever experience of God.
  12. The outcome can even be worse than that. A mother may confide in manners which undermine the daughter's healthy maturation. The daughter may grow to hate her father or distrust men in general. There are no limits to how an inappropriate parent-child relationship can damage a child. A child may feel guilty for the family's demise. I see that gradually changing. More women seem to be dressing scantily to allow sneaking peaks at these strategically placed tattoos. Words of advice to anybody planning on getting a tattoo: DRAW YOUR OWN DESIGN!!!! Never pick a sample tattoo from a catalogue. You will likely regret it when you see somebody else with that same skin-picture. I repeat NEVER PICK A DESIGN FROM THE ARTIST"S BOOK!!!!!!!! Even if you can not draw: MAKE YOUR OWN!!!! I disagree. They are starting to become too common. Anybody can get a tattoo. Just wait until brandings become popular.
  13. What kind of logic is that???? The majority??? What if the majority decided to re-institute slavery????? Does that make slavery right?
  14. Of course -- if the farmer forces ALL of the other farmers in his market to follow the marketing board. You are asking the wrong question. You should be asking: should Canadians be allowed to purchase produce from a farmer who does not follow the marketing board? or should EVERY farmer be forced to follow the marketing board? Now, we will hear how the Wheat Board makes sure that our wheat is safe and handled properly and not poisonous and not genetically modified and yadda yadda yadda. Lay it on.
  15. Stop. The Wheat Board is a form of market control and protectionism -- pure and simple. Screwing the citizens by forcing them to pay more and get less. I am not going to argue that Canadian wheat products are better or worse than others. None of that is relevant. The point is choice. If I want to eat good quality farm products or if I want to save money by eating poor quality produce -- fine. I should have that choice. If all of the consumers support poor-quality produce and the better-quality super-natural produce can not compete -- too bad. Sigh. Same old argument - paranoia. Fine. I am going to pipe in here by connecting it to my brief experience speaking with the Lyndon LaRouche club members who seemed to call the kettle black when it comes to protectionism. They were throwing out words and accusations of "fascism" on multi-nationals too. Protectionism is fascism -- not the other way around. Anything short of 100% free trade in goods and labor is fascism. In other words, one group of merchants (in this case: farmers) forces their neighbors and fellow citizens to buy local or pay higher for imports. That is cronyism / fascism / protectionism -- they are all the same.
  16. I think it is the complete opposite at play: mothers with only daughters will tend to find the outcome of a divorce much more attractive. Why? - because the mother (knowingly or unknowingly) of a daughter can usurp (yes, usurp is a strong word but I think it is appropriate) the parenting relationship to become a mother-girlfriend relationship -- a relationship nobody can escape and one in which the mother is in control. This view depends on a generalization/assumption and I will stand by it: women-friends behave much more like pack animals than do men-friends.
  17. There is an earlier thread: The Iranian Letter -- What's really in it?
  18. I am putting this here because it lends itself best to the general theme of this thread: making our roads more peaceful and market driven. Der Spiegel Behold, all you nay-sayers, the door is opening ever so wider...
  19. Imagine if we wage war against a country where its citizens are content wearing loin-cloths. Not only that, but they do not even have the means to manufacture clothes, let alone a "uniform" to distinguish civilians from combattants. I have trouble seeing the necessity to have a "uniform" as anything but horrifyingly arrogant or a mercenary ruse.
  20. Are you sure you want government?
  21. Your sentiments are probably shared by many Canadians. However, like many Canadians, I think your frustration at our justice system is misguided. What if you found out that it costs more to keep a criminal incarcerated than it does to have them vacation in Cuba???? Would you object to offering them a permanent exile to Cuba with never the chance to ever return to Canada in their lives again?
  22. We should. Is that conditional on a tax-contribution-based democracy or would you have them vote now?
  23. In that case, if "throwing more money at them" can not possibly solve the problem, what do you suggest? Are you willing to improve their working conditions as a different strategy??? You must be joking. No, I am not. Tell me how it is relevent.
  24. Would you say that is good or bad?? Indeed and I think we should be judging our own personal actions a little more often lest we become cold and heartless. Or should we only judge other people's actions? I agree. However, we do that all of the time. No. I think hand-delivering a bomb takes a lot more courage than dropping it from a plane. I honestly have no idea what you are doing over there. Surprise, surprise: not every Canadian supports the "mission" in Afghanistan. You are working for a select number of Canadians. Again, I have no idea what you are doing over there. All I can do is go by what you say. So far, I doubt that you are objective. Which is fine. You are the one doing the "work" over there.
  25. Neither. Called him on what he said. I will repeat my quotation of your account from up above: That is a deflection of the situation. doctor retires = doctor leaving Saying "that no doctors are leaving" makes no sense. Yes, but specialized. Your point?Specialization is irrelevent. They are needed and they are doctors.
