So there was this little girl, see, who was naughty...

She's been aquitted twice and they just said enough is enough. With that track record, even if they had ordered a new trial she might well be acquitted again. -
US dead last in health care

The study is in the form of a book, which is available for sale. You're free to buy it and report back. I'm willing to take the various doctors' and health experts' words on this. -

This has been distorted in the media. The judges did not accept her claim she had to hire a hit man, there's no open season on men. They did say she should not be tried again. Seems fairly reasonable in view of the facts of the case. I get very angry at the anti-male bias of our court system. We've had a woman get 2 years house arrest for jealously stabbing her lover to death, because the judge didn't think she'd do it again. We had a woman get 3 years probation for the same thing because she was Native and in treatment for her alcoholism. No way if gender roles were reversed would those sentences have stood, and the womyn would be out in force on the street. But this judgement seems reasonable. -

It's easy to say show the research. I don't have acess to it. JAMA does, and I'm willing to take their world for it. You want to hang on to your beliefs by not doing so, that's up to you. -

http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1556967#qundefined If you don't believe the journal of the american medical association, I guess you'll have to look up those numbers yourself. The references are given if you follow the link. Personally I'm willing to take their word for it. -

Since the US is a country run by millionaires in the pockets of billionaires, it makes perfect sense to think that way. Even if the person themselves is a poor shlub who'll never have access to the same healthcare these rich folks do. An American said that. -
By Rheason of insanity? Flight to avoid prosecution was shown to be a bogus charge?

Can a Jewish State be Democratic?

That doesn't seem to match up with the claim that all Israeli citizens have equal rights. -

So what, all those settlements, which keep growing and growing, displacing the Palestinians would just remain status quo? -

From the original article : Do you have that money? Do you care about others who don't? Actually even those with the money would not want a system with a lot of excess capacity, since it would drive up their costs so much. Lots of concern in the US about the high cost of their system and the drag it puts on the economy. they're just not getting their money's worth, even less so than we are. -
Can a Jewish State be Democratic?
Canuckistani replied to TheNewTeddy's topic in The Rest of the World
Thing is, especially if Israel annexes the West Bank and at some point non-Jews become the majority and vote to not have Israel a Jewish state, there's nothing the Jewish minority could do about it. If the non-Jewish majority decided to not give preference to Jewish immigrants, same deal. Hence, a Jewish state is not a democratic state. Or, alternatively, what does it mean to call Israel a Jewish state if the majority don't want it to be? In fact what does it mean now, if there are no preferences for Jews? Can't be done, can't be a full democracy and pick out one ethnicity or religion for special status. -
Can a Jewish State be Democratic?
Canuckistani replied to TheNewTeddy's topic in The Rest of the World
A, the two sided argument. Other supporters of Israel here pointed out that if the majority of Israelis want to keep it a Jewish state, that's democratic. Now we're told that no, it's still democratic if the minority wants it that way. In a true democratic state, the majority would give equal rights to majorities and minorities. Israel is therefore not a true democratic state. I can't conceive of a state that's both democratic and non-secular. -

Pliny is why I don't want to open the healthcare debate to changing our system. I would have no problem learning from Europe, but there's too many Plinys that would be pushing for us to adopt that crap US system. I've lived and worked there. The system is crap. Even HMO coverage costs both the employer and the employee more than we pay here in premiums, and you can't choose any doctor you want, go to any hospital as needed, and there's some highschool grad deciding whether your condition is covered. Then there's the co-pays and pre-existing conditions exemptions. -
I always thought that drugs will get you thru a period of no guns better than guns will get you thru a period of no drugs.

Which is why all semi-automatic rifles should be banned. Civilians have no need for them.

Does this really need a reply? I don't doubt that often happens. Don't see why it would in this case. Usually it happens when the police want to protect themselves, nobody seems to be pointing a finger at them in this case. Can you give an example of what was categorically stated to be true and later had to be retracted? Details, maybe - in the beginning. They can come out later. Actually lying, I'm not for.I don't watch TV much, so my info comes from newspapers and forums such as this. So I'm not really clear on what you are mistatemetns you are referring to, but it seems like you are really wanting to claim some sort of conspiracy here without actually using the c word. Were there really more misstatements and retractions in this case than other calamities of this sort?

You sure about the officials claiming all information was true, or was that the media hyping things up? This had to be a very confusing event - I agree the officials should be circumspect. At the same time, they have to reassure people that things are safe now and try to get info to them regarding loved ones etc.

As the article says: So would we be happier if we cut way back on immigration? But as it also says, borderline socialism with civil liberties and few restrictions on capital and labor seem to be the way to go. We should quit looking south for inspiration and look east instead.

http://ca.finance.ya...-233204795.html I guess we're doing pretty well, especially being a big country with a heterogeneous population. We could also do better of course, if we looked more to the top countries on that list for suggestions on how to organize ourselves. What's not mentioned is the lack of poverty in the top countries. I'm not sure we're doing all that well there, but then Ireland is on the list, and they must have quite a bit of poverty.
