Pretty easy to look up: wiki It seems to have been meant as an excuse to holocaust the Canaanites, as Canaan was a descendant of Ham. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_Ham

Ah, sorry, I was using an unauthorized translation. It should read "as daubed in mud and baked by the sun." The rest is pretty well accurate tho, huh?

So the strategy is not sensible - what's wrong with ranting about it? -
Apartheid? in the West Bank and Gaza

Please explain how having civilian Jewish Israelis living among the attackers, requiring military protection, and representing a continued provocation to the Palestinians in any way reduces the fear or likelihood of endless attacks on Israeli civilians? -
You don't recall the passage? "Lo, and I say unto you, the descendants of Ham shall be as burned by the sun, and shall be as slaves to the descendants of Japheth. Yeah, those be the pure ones, the delight of the Lord, and their skin be white as the raiment of angels. They shall be given dominion over the descendants of Ham and Shem. Yeah, even the Lord's chosen people shall be forsaken for Japeth's sons, and a mighty burnt offering shall be made of them to please the Lawd. For I am a jealous Lawd, and a fickle one."

http://news.national...-since-newtown/ Thats a graphic of the slate data. If you look at the examples given, they include accidental shootings. As the article says, suicides typically go unreported. So it includes all deaths they know about, but isn't going to include many suicides. The better metric is the 30 gun homicides a day given by the CDC - no reason that's changed. That's where the 900 figure comes from. But if it makes AW better to quibble about the figures, as if magically after Sandyhook gun homicides drastically declined, let her have her illusion. It's tough enough living in the US as it is, without having to face reality. You know, like Col. Jessep said.

They should be pretty harsh just because it's wrong. But, of course they should not act to prevent women from reporting rapes. So the punishment should only ensue if it is proven that the woman lied. For example, there was a (black) guy on death row in the US for raping a (white) woman. DNA later proved that he could not have done it. But there was no indication the woman lied. She just didn't get a good look at him, or possibly the police pushed her to be more certain than she was or even she can't tell one black man from another. None of those are reasons to prosecute the woman (police may be a different matter). But here's another example - at the university of Colorado, a woman charged a co-worker with rape. It came out that she had consensual sex with him, but didn't want her boyfriend to believe she did. Never the less, the co-worker was fired while the woman retained her job because she had "emotional problems." Another example: a woman who rear ended another driver claimed he raped her. He was a big biker looking guy. Turns out he's a devout Christian and she made it up just to avoid having to pay for the accident. She was not charged, but she certainly should have been.

Slate, et al don't have exhaustive figures here - on their website they ask people to write in if they know of any gun deaths in their community. But they do seem to be talking about all gun deaths, not just homicides. CDC estimates about 30 gun homicides a day. There is no reason to assume this has gone down. So Obama was quite right to say there were 900 gun homicides in the first month after Sandyhook. Just that the data isn't in yet. It might turn out there were only 899 gun homicides in that first month, which will of course get the usual suspects to chortle with glee how gun homicides are actually down in the US, and besides, Canada does it toooooooooooooooooooooo.

The Unnanounced Class War
Canuckistani replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It's all part of the too big to fail problem. Just as they didn't level criminal charges against HSBC for money laundering, nor all the other banks that engage in it, once they started pulling on the thread of going after one or two people. the whole sweater would unravel and calamity would result. If Obama's such a commie, why does he draw his financial advisors from Goldman Sachs, same as everybody else? Once he was elected, he was shown who's really in charge and went right along with it. Even his supposedly radical health reforms will just make big insurance bigger and richer, where you now have to buy insurance from private companies mandated by the govt. -
I think it's silly to talk about what is worse. They're both bad, and both perps should receive stiff sentences. No more excusing women who lie - it should be vigorously prosecuted.
-
Seem like two sides of the same coin and should have the same consequences to me. Rape destroys the person more on an inner level, false accusations of rape more on a social level (at least in our society). But it's time to stop making excuses for women that make false charges as we do "the poor dear has emotional problems." In the US they've actually handed out severe prison sentences for false allegations, tho nothing like the kind of sentence a rapist would get.

I agree, and within limits that's a good thing. People striving to get ahead of others is a prime motivator - without it we would still be grovelling in the mud. Grog discovers fire - what do you think he's doing it for? He wants to have his genes passed on, by attracting women and giving his kids a better chance of survival. The thing is that Grog already knew something some of us forget these days - cooperating with others can also give your own genes a better chance of survival. We'll never have true equality because people are just not equal. But the smart ones have learned to also put limits on this striving to better the other, because with limits we have a win win situation. So for our modern economies, the Scandinavian countries seem to have figured out the right balance more than anybody else. But what WIP was talking about was Grog's and our drive to pass on those genes even when the environment won't support it. Like yeast in a sugar solution, say, or the Easter Islanders, or the Hare Lynx cycle. What keeps species from crashing are natural limits to their growth. We as humans act as if those limits don't apply, and have found ways to subvert those limits. We won't be able to keep that up for ever.

Jesus said render unto Ceasar - he wasn't interested in politics. He'd tell us to share and share alike, I think, which I would interpret as every Canadian gets the same deal, no preferences based on race. He'd certainly tell us to help the poor, and a lot of natives are poor and so would get helped, but not based on race. The same help would be available to 2nd Nations people as well. Early Christians were basically commies, so I don't think true Christians fit into a modern capitalist economy all that well.

I fail to see the diff between this bill's sponsors and "women who are legitimately raped don't get pregnant" republicans and whatever other knee slapper came out during the election. It's not all Republicans, we know there are some who are socially liberal, but it's a large number of Republicans all over the US who believe this sort of crap, so it's not the ten involved in this bill either.

Wow, maybe read what WIP wrote again.

So there was this little girl, see, who was naughty...
Canuckistani replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
No, this isn't a systemic failure as far as the prosecution is concerned. Different prosecutors, different strategy. This is departmental failure in this case, I assume they know it by now. The prosecutors would not be punished for this, hell they can act in bad faith and still never face consequences - they didn't in this case. I don't understand why the prosecution didn't change strategy in the second trial, but what do I know. -
Can a Jewish State be Democratic?
Canuckistani replied to TheNewTeddy's topic in The Rest of the World
As the Jewish writer I linked to said, Israel seems poised to follow the Muslim states into theocracy. Different religion, same shyte. If Israel won't annex the West Bank, the current situation is also untenable. Does Israel really want to be an occupying power for ever, slowly taking more and more of the prime land in the West Bank, until they have achieved de facto annexation but without those pesky Palestinians to worry about, who are basically shoved into gulags. Time to make some bold moves on the part of Israel. I say get back behind '67 borders, but can understand the reluctance to do so. That new centrist guy who just won a surprising number of seats wants to retain some of the largest settlements and not give up East Jerusalem, but otherwise let the Palestinians have a state. At least make some moves in that direction, stop all new settlements and close the less tenable ones. Basically declare the borders that this guy wants to be the border between Israel and the new state of Palestine. I might not like it too much, but I could live with it. I think there are a lot of people out there who share my opinion on this, including many Jews. -

I don't have faith that an inquiry will do much. I don't think the Pickton inquiry did much to further things. Some gestures about how they're going to be more aware of vulnerable women, it's just hand waving. I think the inquiry served to cover up as much as it uncovered. The Ian Bush inquiry was a complete cover up. The BC fisheries inquiry had no smoking gun, so no concrete changes could be proposed, Etc. They mostly just seem to be feel good exercises to make us feel we're doing something or a way for the govt to defer the issue until the storm has passed. And what strategy? The police are well aware by now of domestic violence. It's also a very tricky area - there doesn't seem to be any concrete evidence in this case, so what are the police to do? As for the prosecutors of this woman, they dropped the ball, I think they know that. I doubt the inquiry would shed any new light there. -

Canuckistani replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I have little faith in an inquiry - they often just seem like a waste of money to prove nothing. And how would it alter the outcome of this case? The highest court has spoken, there's nowhere to go from here. Why complain if things are bad? Did you really say that? Here's the video I saw: http://ca.news.yahoo...-213000495.html -
Must have been born yesterday, since last I looked that is still the case today. Canada, US, most places. Not sure what that has to do with WIP' point. We certainly don't teach that crap in Canada in public schools, but it seems the US does.

Why our mindsets are so different
Canuckistani replied to TheNewTeddy's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Separating head of state with head of govt seems like a good idea. Head of govt is a politician who's going to get mud on his shoes. Head of state should be above that. Look at the mindless veneration of the US pres at times, willing to follow him into useless wars, support my pres, right or wrong, etc (because pres = country). Only with Obama has his race lessened that crap a bit, because is usually flows from the right, where the racists seem to hang out. The white ones,. anyway.
