Im on team blue, but the tea leaves say change is afoot. Harpers campaign is eerily like the dion campaign - over 2 weeks before the election.
-
He has one of the highest approval ratings in the country, delivers consistent balanced budgets, and sk has very low unemployment. He has to manage a caucus just like a pm and have opposition just like a pm. Also hes squeaky clean.
-
Except harpers legacy isnt all that controversial: trade agreements signed, good handling of economic crisis, and a balanced budget. Its not PET, laurier, john a macdonald level of legacy, but harper has his stamp. The tories would need a leader who is very likeable and well known. People have spent a long time getting to know justin Trudeau. He has been in parliament since 08 and was making a name for himself since then. Like i said the only centre right person with the charisma and likeability and results to compete with trudeau is brad wall and i don't see him leaving sk anytime soon.
-
Chretien did. He exited stage left and let martin have a go for a few years. At least harper has a legacy he can leave behind which is eerily similar to pmpms.
-
Sounds like harper had "the chat" i was alluding to previously. 10 ish yrs seems to be the going rate. I remember in 2008 dion had that same chat...
-
The tories need someone likeable. The only person i see with that would be snagging brad wall out of sk.
-
I think it was all done thru the pmo lackeys.

He probably didnt give two figs where duffy was from or his spending and didnt see it as a problem till the msm brought it up. Saw it as a problem Then he delegated. Just like chretien delegated stuff to his lackeys to do, thats what they are there for.

My guess how it went down. Harper was aware of duffy stuff through msm and gave direction to the pmo to deal with it. Harper wouldnt be stupid enough to associate himself in writing with that scandal, thats what the lackeys in the pmo are for. All harper has to know is that its dealt with (even though in reality it was made worse)

Lol, i hear you on that. But say you were to increase sales and get yourself to the good level of income, i dont believe you should be punished for that as your taking a big risk with a business and are quite possibly employing youth helping them out, whereas trudeau thinks you should pay more taxin that event.
-
Personally id trade the child tax credit for infrastructure investment, but that would be viewed as cruelBut the budget is balanced and debt payments are starting again. ontario is spending all kinds of money and keep digging deeper and deeper. Not only that his plan to pay for it is to up taxes on people who are doing well which is something i oppose in principal as i view it as trying to enforce equality of outcome instead of equality of opportunity and that people shouldnt be vilified for doing well. Especially since they already contribute to society a lot. All the liberals have to do was keep a balanced budget, have somebody not named trudeau, and i think they would be knocking at a majority.
-
The deficit has also returned to a small surplus which means that the debt will start getting lower again. Trudeau wants to spend excess money on a problem that cant be fixed by us if its even a problem at all. Unless trudeau can convince china to fire up its printing press and buy more resources. The problem is with interest rates. If those rise significantly then this country is in trouble.
-
Yup, they gave him a theme to run on. In all seriousness, people are just sick of harper. I think a different leader would have been much more successful as the tories had a balanced budget, big trade agreements and the theme of people keeping more of what they earn.
-
Its still extra dollars that have to be paid. Even if gdp grows by 7%. Essentially its like taking a loan out on a car and then getting a pay raise. The debt still needs to be paid and we learned our lesson with trudeau 1 and mulroney.

Can you name 10 REAL achievements of PM Stephen Harper?
blueblood replied to Go.Leafs's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
1. Lowered gst 2. TPP 3. CETA 4. Tfsas 5. Income splitting 6. Balanced budget 7. Performance during economic crisis - also issuing warning about canadians taking on too much debt 8. Numerous bilateral trade agreements with other countries 9. Corporate tax rate cuts 10. Ending the canadian wheat board monopoly thus ensuring western grain farmers have the same opportunities as eastern grain farmers. 11. End of long gun registry 12. Resedential school settlement 13. Declaration of quebec as a nation within united canada thus the start of the kneecapping the bq Sounds pretty successful to me. -
The tories campaign is like dions 08 campaign. I imagine harper will be getting the speech shortly or will have already gotten it.
-
They used the wrong attack ads on him. Saying hes "not ready" gives him an opportunity to "get ready" which he did.
-
I think it was done at the debates. People just sick of harper in spite of him not doing anything in the grand scheme of things too outrageous. Pity, the budget is balanced, and all those trade deals got done up. Trudeau will be in power 10-15 yrs after this as the tories dont have as good a leader on deck. Pity as our debt is about to balloon.
-
Its simple, the tories are conveying a message of saying no to spending and programs etc. while the liberals are saying yes to spending and programs etc. its far easier to convince someone to say yes to something than to tell them no and to suck it up.
-
But people like the environmental movement and high government spending, especially ontario people as they keep electing them.
-
See this time around i know harper has been in for too long and people are sick of him and had the liberals had a different leader than trudeau i would seriously look at them. However a lot of people have bought into this tax the rich nonsense with excessive deficit spending. I think people assume interest rates are going to stay low forever. I think the status quo opinion now is that trudeau is foing to win and i think he will get two or three terms if interest rates stay low. Unfortunately the next generation of canadians are going to be paying through the nose for this upcoming spending spree and the interest on it. If i were tory party brass i would be pitching french lessons to brad wall as i cant find a right of centre person as likeable as him.
